Meaning of Fitness:

Fitness refers to a state of physical and mental well-being that enables individuals to perform daily
activities efficiently.

It includes components such as cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and body
composition.

Definition of Fitness:

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), fitness is the ability to perform daily tasks with vigor
and alertness, without undue fatigue, and with ample energy to enjoy leisure pursuits and meet
unforeseen emergencies.

Meaning of Wellness:

Wellness is a holistic approach to health that encompasses physical, mental, emotional, social, and
spiritual well-being.

It goes beyond mere fitness to include a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

Definition of Wellness:

According to the National Wellness Institute, wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and
making choices toward a more successful existence.

Importance of Fitness and Wellness:

Enhances overall health and longevity.

Reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.

Improves mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.

Boosts energy levels and enhances productivity.

Supports better sleep and relaxation.

2. Components of Fitness

Fitness is broadly classified into two categories:

1. Health-Related Fitness Components:


Cardiovascular Endurance: The ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to muscles during
sustained physical activity.

Muscular Strength: The maximum force a muscle can exert in a single effort.

Muscular Endurance: The ability of a muscle to perform repeated contractions over time without fatigue.

Flexibility: The range of motion around a joint.

Body Composition: The ratio of body fat to lean body mass (muscles, bones, water, etc.).

2. Skill-Related Fitness Components:

Agility: The ability to change direction quickly.

Balance: The ability to maintain stability while stationary or moving.

Coordination: The ability to use different body parts together efficiently.

Power: The ability to exert maximum force in a short duration.

Speed: The ability to move quickly.

Reaction Time: The time taken to respond to a stimulus.

Several factors influence an individual's fitness and wellness, including:

5. Causes of Obesity
