Teaching Methodologies

The document discusses two teaching approaches: teacher-centered and student-centered. The teacher-centered approach emphasizes the teacher as the primary source of knowledge, leading to advantages such as classroom order and independent learning, but also disadvantages like lack of collaboration and student passivity. In contrast, the student-centered approach promotes collaboration and active participation among students, fostering independence and engagement, though it can lead to noisy classrooms and potential gaps in instruction.

THE TEACHER-CENTERED APPROACH

A teacher-centred approach is one the most traditional approaches towards teaching. The
teacher is the centre of focus. Hence students put all of their focus on the teacher. The teacher
talks, while the students listen. Even if the teacher plans out activities, the students work alone.
Hence collaboration is discouraged. So in this approach all methods, activities, and techniques
the teacher is the deciding force. Each and every command has to come from the teachers end.
Often

Direct Instruction
Direct instruction is the general term that refers to the traditional teaching strategy that relies
on clear teaching through lectures. Direct instruction is the primary teaching strategy under the
teacher-centered approach. Teachers are the only source of knowledge and information. Direct
instruction is effective in teaching basic and major skills across all content areas.

Advantages
 When education is teacher-centered, the classroom remains orderly. Students are quiet,
and the teacher holds full control of the classroom and its activities.
 Because students learn on their own, they learn to be independent and make their own
decisions.
 Because the teacher directs all classroom activities, they do not have to worry that they
will miss an important topic. They start relying on the teacher more than themselves.

Disadvantages
 When students work alone, they do not learn to collaborate with other students, and
communication skills may suffer.
 Teacher-centered instruction can get boring for students. Some of them act as if they are
listening but actually their minds are not paying attention.
 Teacher-centered instruction does not allow students to ask questions.
 Students become passive learners.
THE STUDENT-CENTERED APPROACH

In a student-centered classroom, both teachers and students share the learning process.
Instructions do not only come from the teachers, but the students also give Ideas and
suggestions in different activities. Students and teachers interact equally. Group work is
encouraged, and students learn to collaborate and communicate with one another. Student-
centered approach is also known as learner-centered education.

Inquiry-Based Learning

Inquiry-based learning is a teaching method that focuses on student investigation and

hands-on learning. In this method, the teacher's primary role is that of a helper, providing
guidance and support for students through the learning process. Inquiry-based learning falls
under the student-centered approach, in that students play an active role in their own
learning process.

Advantages

 Students communicate and collaborate through group work.

 Students learn to ask questions and complete tasks independently.
 Students are more interested in learning activities when they get a chance to
cooperate with one another and participate actively.
 Students become independent learners.
 Students are more active in the class.

Disadvantages
 Because students are talking, classrooms are often busy and noisy.
 Teachers must attempt to manage all students' activities at once, which can be
difficult when students are working on different stages of the same project.
 Because the teacher does not deliver instruction to all students at once, some
students may miss important facts.
 Some students prefer to work alone, so group work can become difficult for such
students.

Learning Styles

Fill in the empty box with what you think can be the characteristics related to the given
learning styles (modes of learning)

Type of Learners Definition How do the students learn

in each style
Visual Learners Visual learners are those Like to watch
who learn things best
through seeing them. These
learners attend to
information most effectively
when they see something,
for example, pictures,
diagrams, films, and videos
or demonstrations. Students
rely upon a visual learning
style: "Show me and I'll
understand."
Auditory Learners Auditory learners perform Concentrate well
best when they can hear
information. Auditory
learners tend to benefit
most from traditional
teaching techniques. They
concentrate best by
receiving new or difficult
information by listening to
themselves or someone else
talking.
Kinesthetic Learners Tactile/Kinesthetic learners Move around a lot
need to have hands on
experience to learn their
best. Kinesthetic learners
are most successful when
totally engaged with the
learning activity.
