KITZ 274
Courier to VDEW/IEC60870-5-103
Protocol Converter
The KITZ interface units provide conversion between
K-BUS ports and IEC60870 format data.
A specific P740 Courier firmware is used with the
KITZ to directly interface to integrated SCADA
(Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) systems
and is written around the Courier protocol.
The KITZ 274 Protocol Converter allows up to eight
P74x Courier relays to communicate with an
IEC60870-5-103 or VDEW master station. This master
may be connected via RS485, RS232 or fibre optic
cable. An additional front RS232 port provides
convenient access for commissioning of the KITZ
274 and the attached P740 Courier devices using
Courier master station software.
The KITZ 274 provides the protocol conversion and
convenient Courier access in a Midos case suitable
for mounting alongside relays in electrically hostile
environments.
This arrangement is suitable for communicating with
upto 32 devices at a maximum distance of 1km in
electrically hostile environments.

Optical fibre 2. The relays are interconnected on K-Bus, which
EIA(RS)485 / EIA(RS)232
connects to port 3 of the KITZ 274. The KITZ 274 is
then connected to the VDEW or IEC60870-5-103
master station via either the optical fibre, RS485 or
RS232 master port. The VDEW master station
communicates with other compatible devices at the
same time as with the P74x relays.
The addition of an RS232 port on the front of the unit
allows a protection engineer to view or make changes
to relay settings at site, with a laptop PC without
disconnecting the remote communications to the
IEC60870-5-103 master station.
