Report on Workshop: BIM for Construction Project Management
The three-day workshop on Building Information Modelling (BIM) for Construction Project
Management, held at Nirma University on March 2nd, 16th and 30th, 2024. The workshop was
jointly organized by the Civil Engineering Department, Institute of Technology, and the Institute
of Architecture and Planning under the auspices of the Center for Continuing Education (CCE) at
Nirma University. 85 students from both institutes participated, gaining valuable insights into this
emerging technology. Dr. Lukman Mansuri, Dr. Vishal Lad, and Ar. Biswanath Mudi served as
the coordinators for the workshop.
The workshop covered a comprehensive range of topics designed to equip participants with a
strong foundation in BIM:
● Introduction to Building Information Modelling (BIM): This session provided a
foundational understanding of BIM, its core principles, and its growing significance in the
construction industry. Participants explored the benefits of BIM, including improved
collaboration, reduced errors, and enhanced project efficiency.
● Exploration of BIM's Dimensions: The workshop focused on the various dimensions of
BIM, encompassing 3D modeling, data management, integrated project delivery, and
lifecycle management. Participants learned how BIM transcends simple 3D visuals to
incorporate crucial information for the entire building life cycle.
● Understanding BIM's Role in Project Lifecycle Management: This session focused on
how BIM can be utilized throughout various stages of a construction project, from
conceptual design to facility maintenance. Participants gained insights into how BIM
streamlines processes, facilitates better decision-making, and promotes collaboration
between architects, engineers, and contractors.
● Basics of Revit Architecture Software: A hands-on introduction to Revit Architecture
software was provided. Participants learned fundamental functionalities for creating and
managing 3D models, including building elements, annotations, and parametric
components.
● Hands-on Sessions on Navisworks: Navisworks, a software tool for integrating BIM
models from different disciplines, was explored through practical exercises. Participants
gained experience in clash detection, where potential conflicts between building
components are identified and addressed during the design phase, saving time and
resources during construction.

● Hands-on Sessions on 3D and 4D BIM: The workshop concluded with a session
exploring the applications of 3D and 4D BIM. Participants learned how 3D models provide
a realistic visualization of the project, while 4D BIM adds a time dimension for
construction sequencing and scheduling, enhancing project planning and execution.
The workshop on BIM for Construction Project Management was a success. The combination of
theoretical knowledge and hands-on sessions equipped participants with a comprehensive
understanding of BIM's capabilities and its profound impact on construction workflows. The
workshop fostered a collaborative learning environment, encouraging interaction and knowledge
exchange among students from civil engineering and architecture.
