3.6 Cooling by Evaporation

During evaporation, the average energy of liquid particles decreases as higher energy particles escape, leading to a drop in temperature. Sweat cools the skin by using thermal energy from the skin for evaporation, which removes heat. Isopropanol feels cold on the skin because its rapid evaporation lowers its temperature by absorbing thermal energy from the skin.

Year 9 Unit 3.

6 Cooling by Evaporation

1. a) Explain what happens to the average energy of particles in a liquid during evaporation.

--> The average energy of the particles decreases because the particles with
more / the most energy leave the liquid.

--> Slower moving particles are left behind in the liquid.

b) What happens to the temperature of a liquid during evaporation?

--> The temperature decreases.

--> Temperature is the average energy of the particles in a substance, so as the

average energy decreases, the temperature decreases.

2. a) Explain how sweat can cool the skin.

--> Thermal energy from skin is used to evaporate the sweat.

--> As sweat evaporates, the thermal energy from the skin is removed.

b) Explain why skin can become too warm when sweat cannot evaporate.

--> There is no loss of thermal energy due to evaporation.

3. Isopropanol is a liquid that can be applied to the skin to reduce the chance of cuts becoming
infected. Isopropanol evaporates quickly. Isopropanol at room temperature feels cold when applied
to the skin. Explain why.

--> Evaporation lowers the average energy of the particles in the liquid.

--> so the temperature of the liquid decreases;

--> Thermal energy from the skin is used to evaporate the liquid. As the liquid
evaporates, it removes thermal energy from the skin.
