EQ2 EMT For FEAR and ANXIOUSNESS
As well as with our past experiences, EMT can be used to process the future ones.
When do you want to use this?
One of the most important factors in our behavior is our mental image of our future
experiences.
When you are anxious about approaching that girl, you have mental image of the future
experience of rejection you will have. When you feel that you won't be able to find a job
you like, you have a mental image of future experience in which you will be rejected on
the job interviews. When you are worried about your son who didn't come home at 2 am,
you are experiencing (partially and unconsciously) future experience in which he had a
traffic accident (or was mugged, or is doing drugs, depending on what are you worried
about).
So, the imaginary future experiences you have in your mind could obviously be a
problem. What should we do with them?
The first thing to understand here is that we are creating images of future experiences on
the basis of some charged past experiences.
We are worried about future outcomes because we have some past experiences that
shows us that something like that could happen (or is likely to happen).
How to deal with that?
The process we should do is simple.
Process:
1. Imagine the future event you are working on. What will happen, how would you
experience it, how would you feel in this future event? Describe it. Write it down.
2. Which one of your previous experiences shows that you would feel like this in
such experience?
3. EMT that past experience.
Using this technique to deal with the fear and anxiousness
One of most obvious uses of this process is to deal with fear, worry or anxiousness.
Every fear or anxiousness you may experience is the result of having your attention stuck
on some negative future experience.
If your kid is afraid of the dark, he is anxious about future experience in which
boogieman will get out of that dark closet and take him away from his parents.
If you are anxious because your husband is driving a motorcycle, you are having that
image of the future experience in which you are getting news about the accident he had.
If you are feeling nervous about the exam you are to take, you are experiencing this
imaginary future experience of failing. And so on.
This is why this technique is one of the most effective therapeutic tools for dealing with
any fear or anxiousness.
To solve any fear or anxiousness you should:
Process:
1. Imagine the future event you are anxious about. What will happen, how would
you experience it, how would you feel in this future event? Describe it. Write it
down.
2. Which one of your previous experiences shows that you would feel like this in
such experience?
3. EMT it.
(Sometimes it's necessary to do this process few times (sometimes there is more than one
negative past experience which causes your fear)).
You could easily deal with any worry you might have about anything with this easy
process. From mild insecurities to the serious phobias.
Use it whenever you are not comfortable about some future outcome.
