SIMPLE PHYSICS ASSIGNMENT 03
Topic: WORK, ENERGY AND POWER
INSTRUCTIONS: Answer the following questions on a separate answer sheet and submit them
to the Cecil Academy tutor in your area on Wednesday, 5th January 2022, before 12:00 GMT.
WORK
1. Define work.
2. State the formula for calculating work done.
3. State whether work is performed or not in the following situations;
(a) A boy lifts a pile of books to the top of his head.
(b) A woman carries a 12kg baby on her back for one hour.
4. What are the SI units of work?
5. A boy pushes a desk along the level ground with a force of 30N. If the desk moves
through a distance of 6m, how much work is done by the boy in moving this desk?
6. Mary lifts a 200g mug cup from the ground to a shelf which is 2m above the ground.
Calculate the work done by Mary in lifting the mug.
7. Simon performs 300J of work in moving a box along the level ground. If he uses 200N of
force to move the box on the ground where friction force is 50N, through what distance
does he move the box?
ENERGY
8. Define energy.
9. Mention any six types of energy that you know.
10. What are the si units of energy?
11. State the law of conservation of energy.
12. Write the energy changes that occur in
(a) A battery
(b) An electric bulb
(c) A swinging pendulum
(d) An hydro electric power station
(e) A falling object
13. A builder drops a 2000g block from the top of a building which is 20m high. Taking
g=10N/kg and ignoring air resistance,
(a) Calculate the potential energy of the block before the fall.
(b) At what height will the kinetic energy of the block equal the potential energy?
(c) Calculate the kinetic energy of the block at 10m of the fall.
(d) Calculate the kinetic energy of the block just before it hits the ground.
(e) With what velocity does the block hit the ground?
(f) Write the energy transformations that occur in the block from the top of the
building to the time it hits the ground and stops moving.
14. On renewable and nonrenewable energy;
(I) By definition, differentiate between renewable and non renewable
energy.
(II) Give two examples of each.
(III) Give two advantages of each.
(IV) State at least two disadvantages of each type of energy.
15. List two negative effects of using energy on the environment.
POWER
16. Define power.
17. State the formula used to calculate the power of an object.
18. What are the SI units of power?
19. Mr Chenda pulls a table using a force of 100N.
(a) If he moves the table through a distance of 8m in 1minute, calculate his power.
(b) Given that Mr Chenda moves the table through 8m in 1 minute along the level
ground where the friction force acting is 50N, what would be his power rating?
20. Jane lifts a 2kg packet of sugar from a 1.5m high table to a shelf which is 3.5m above
the ground in 15 seconds. What is her power rating?
21. A construction machine lifts a 20 tonne load of sand to a height of 5m in 2 minutes,
what is it’s power rating?
22. Given that another machine performs 50kJ of work in lifting a load. If it’s power rating is
2.5kW: how long does the machine take to lift this load?
