Motivation for Research on Micro Hydropower Systems for Remote Communities

Access to reliable and sustainable energy remains a significant challenge for remote communities
worldwide, particularly in developing regions. Many of these areas are isolated from national grids
and rely heavily on expensive and environmentally harmful energy sources, such as diesel
generators. This lack of access to clean and affordable electricity limits socio-economic development
impedes educational opportunities, and hinders healthcare services, exacerbating the cycle of
poverty.

Despite the increasing global emphasis on renewable energy, the potential of micro hydropower
systems (MHPS) as a sustainable solution for remote communities is often underexplored. Unlike
other renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind, microhydropower offers a continuous, stable
energy supply that can operate independently of weather conditions. Additionally, it can be more
cost-effective and environmentally friendly than extending national grids to remote areas or
maintaining diesel generators.

This research aims to explore the feasibility, design, and implementation of micro hydropower
systems tailored to remote communities' specific needs and conditions. By focusing on MHPS, the
study intends to fill the gap in knowledge regarding their practical application in isolated regions,
considering factors such as local topography, water availability, and community involvement.

Understanding and promoting the use of microhydropower could provide these communities with a
reliable energy source, thereby improving living standards, fostering economic development, and
contributing to global efforts to combat climate change. Our interest in this topic stems from our
commitment to sustainable development and the desire to contribute to practical solutions that
address energy poverty in underserved areas.
