I.​ Learning Objectives


At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a) identify modal verbs used in sentences
b) express ideas using different modals.
c) construct sentences using appropriate modal verbs

III.​ Procedure
A.​ Preliminary Activities
1.​ Prayer
The teacher will choose one student in a class to lead the prayer.
2.​ Greetings
The teacher will greet the learners
3.​ Checking of Attendance
The assigned monitor of the class will be requested to check the
attendance of the class.
4.​ Classroom Management
The teacher will remind the students regarding classroom rules.

B. Motivation

The teacher will play a song, and students will pass around a French fry
that contains words. When the song stops, the student holding the French
fry will pick a word and use it in a sentence. Then, the music continues,
and so does the game until it reaches the last student.

C. Enabling Activities

1.​ Activity
The teacher will call a student who wants to do the activity. The student is
asked to imagine being Andie and to choose which of the shirts he/she
would want to wear. The participant should pay attention to the words
printed on each shirt. The goal is to identify which printed shirt expresses
obligation, ability, permission, request, or willingness.

2.​ Analysis
1) Did you enjoy the activity?
2) Which printed shirt expresses obligation, ability, permission or request?
3) Based on the activity, do you have an idea about our topic for today?

3. Abstraction

The teacher will discuss the Modal Verbs that expresses obligation,
ability, permission or request

Modal Verbs - are auxiliary or helping verbs which modify or change the
meaning of the main
verbs.

Obligation
Modals: must, have to, need to
Ex: The plan must be accomplished without her knowing it.

Ability
Modals: can, could
Ex: The students can sing harmoniously

Permission
Modals: can, may, could, might
Ex: May I borrow your pen?
Request
Modals: will, would, could
Ex: Will you open the windows?

4. Application

The teacher will group the students into four. Then, she will give an
activity to each group.

Group 1 - Role-play a scenario in the classroom. Make sure to use modal


verbs in your conversation.

Group 2 - Create a slogan about modal verbs.

Group 3 - Write a two-stanza poem on a theme of your choice, but


remember to include modal verbs in it.

Group 4 - Write five sentences about the picture, using modal verbs.

IV. Generalization
-​ Why is it important to learn about modals?
-​ Among these modal verbs, which one do you think you will use most
often?

V. Assessment

Direction: Identify the modal verb used in each sentence and state its
function (obligation, ability, permission, or request). Write your answer on
½ sheet of paper.

VI. Assignment

should, will, would, have to, need to) correctly in your story to describe the
student's actions, feelings, obligations, and possibilities. Clearly
demonstrate your understanding of the different functions of modal verbs.
Write it on a long bond paper and submit it at our next meeting.
