UNIT 1: LOCAL COMMUNITY
Lesson 5: SKILLS 1
Timing: 1 period (45 minutes)
I. Objectives
1.Knowledge: By the end of this unit, students can:
a. Skills:
- Reading: scan for specific information about special products in some areas
- Speaking: give a short presentation about a speciality.
b. Language:
- Vocabulary: use some vocabulary about community
- Grammar: use Present Simple to talk about a speciality
2. Competence
Students can understand more about special products in Viet Nam and England and tell everyone
about a speciality they know.
3. Attitude
Students can develop communication skills and creativity, be collaborative and supportive in pair
work and teamwork and actively join in class activities.

Student book G9, Computer connected to the Internet, TV/Projector.
III. Procedure
Activity 1: Warming up (5 minutes)
Goal The activity aims at creating an active atmosphere in the class before the lesson and
leading into the new lesson
Input CHATTING
Procedure - Ask Ss if they know of any traditional craft villages in Dong Thap and Viet nam. Ask
them to share any information they know about the village (location, special products,
…)
- Lead to the new lesson Reading and Speaking about traditional villages and a
speciality in their community or an area they know.
- Introduce the objectives of the lesson.
Outcome 1. Ss have an exciting atmosphere to start the lesson
2. Expected answers:
- Mat Village, Dinh Yen. The villagers use natural materials like sedge and other plants
to create beautiful and durable mats.
- Bà Đài Boat-Making Village. Lai Vung, This village is famous for its traditional
wooden boats, which are used for fishing, transportation, and tourism
- Long Khánh - Scarf Weaving Village. This village is famous for its production of
checkered black and white shawls, known as "khăn choàng" in Vietnamese
- Lai Vung Fermented Pork Roll Village - This village is famous for its "nem chua"
(fermented pork roll), a popular Vietnamese dish.
Students gain knowledge about Bat Trang Pottery Village.
Activity 2: Teaching new words (10 minutes)

Activity 3 : Activating Ss' knowledge of the topic (5 minutes)
Goal The activity aims at activating Ss' knowledge of the topic of the reading text.
Input Task 1. Work in pairs. Answer the questions.
1. What can you see in each picture ?
2. Do you know any place where people make the thing(s) in each picture?
Procedure - Have Ss look at the pictures in the book/ show the pictures on the slide.
- Ask Ss to answer the 2 Qs in the book individually and then check their answer in
pairs.
- Invite some Ss to share their answers. Confirm the correct answers.
- Tell Ss that they are going to read a text about two traditional villages, one in VN and
the other in England.
Outcome Ss express their thought about the topic
Expected answers:
Picture a: com (young sticky rice)- Vong Village, Ha Noi (another place which makes
com: Tu Le Commune in Yen Bai Province)
Picture b: pottery – Denby, England (in Viet Nam there are some pottery villages like

Activity 4: Reading (5 minutes)
Goal The activity aims at helping Ss develop the skill of guessing the meaning of new words
in the context .
Input
Procedure - Tell Ss what they are going to do. Ask Ss to read around the highlighted words in the
text to roughtly understand the meaning of each word and then match each word with
its definition.
- Have Ss check their answers in pairs.
- Invite some Ss to share their answers. Confirm the correct answers.

Activity 5 : Reading for specific information. (5 mins)
Goal The activity aims at helping Ss develop the skill of reading for specific information.
Input
Procedure - Ask Ss what they are going to do.
- Have Ss share how to do this exercise. If necessary, briefly tell them the steps: Read each
sentence, underline the keywords in each sentence, locate the keywords in the text and
decide which place the information belongs to. Ask Ss to repeat the steps if necessary.
- Ask Ss to do the exercise individually and then check their answers in pairs.
- Invite some Ss to share their answers. Have them explain their answers. Confirm the
correct answers.

Activity 6 : Speaking ( 5 minutes)
Goal The activity aims at helping Ss prepare ideas to talk about a speciality in their
neighborhood, hometown or the area they know.
Input
Procedure - Tell Ss that they are going to work in pairs to answer the questions in the book. Model the
answers to the questions yourself, if needed.
- Have Ss work in pairs to ask and answer the questions in the book. Ask them to note down
their answers.
- Move around to observe and offer help if needed.
- Spare Ss some time to prepare for a short talk about the speciality they have chosen, using
their answers to the questions.

Activity 7 : Giving a short presentation ( 5 minutes)
Goal The activity aims at giving Ss a chance to talk about a speciality.
Input
Procedure - Have Ss work in groups and give a short talk about the speciality they have discussed.
- Ask them to read the example first.
- Invite some Ss to give their presentation to the class.
- Ask other groups to listen and give comments.
- Comment on Ss’ answers.

EXTRA ACTIVITY
Ask Ss to work in pairs to take the quiz about famous products in different places in Viet Nam. They have to
match the products with the places.
