1 A multi-disc clutch has three discs on the driving shaft and two on the driven shaft. The outside
diameter of the contact surfaces is 240 mm and inside diameter 120 mm.Assuming uniform wear
and coefficient of friction as 0.3, find the maximum axial intensity of pres-sure between the discs
for transmitting 25 kW at 1575 r.p.m.

2 In a flat belt drive the initial tension is 2000 N. The coefficient of friction between the belt and the
pulley is 0.3 and the angle of lap on the smaller pulley is 150°. The smaller pulley has a radius of
200 mm and rotates at 500 r.p.m. Find the power in kW transmitted by the belt.

3. The crank and connecting rod of a steam engine are 0.3 m and 1.5 m in length. The crank rotates
at 180 r.p.m. clockwise. Determine the velocity and acceleration of the piston when the crank is at
40 degrees from the inner dead centre position. Also determine the position of the crank for zero
acceleration of the piston.

4 A shaft which rotates at a constant speed of 160 rpm is connected by belting to

parallel720mmapart,which has torun at 60,80and100rpm.The smallest pulley on the driving shaft
is40mmin radius. Determine the remaining radii of the two stepped pulleys for (i) a crossed belt
and (ii) anopenbelt.Neglectbeltthickness andslip.

5 If the crank and the connecting rod are 300 mm and 1 m long respectively and the crank rotates at
a constant speed of 200 r.p.m., determine: 1. The crank angle at which the maximum velocity
occurs, and 2. Maximum velocity of the piston.

6 In a slider crank mechanism, the length of the crank and connecting rod are 150 mm and 600 mm
respectively. The crank position is 60° from inner dead centre. The crank shaftspeed is 450 r.p.m.
(clockwise). Using analytical method, determine: 1. Velocity and acceleration of the slider, and 2.
Angular velocity and angular acceleration of the connecting rod.

7 A, B, C and D are four masses carried by a rotating shaft at radii 100, 125, 200 and 150 mm
respectively. The planes in which the masses revolve are spaced 600 mm apart and the mass of
B, C and D are 10Kg, 5Kg and 4K g respectively.Find ther equired mass A and the relative
angular setting so the four masses so that the shaft shall be incomplete balance.

8 The crank-pin circle radius of a horizontal engine is 300 mm. The mass of the reciprocating parts
is 250 kg. When the crank has travelled 60° from I.D.C., the difference between the driving and
the back pressures is 0.35 N/mm2. The connecting rod length between centers is 1.2 m and the
cylinder bore is 0.5 m. If the engine runs at 250 r.p.m. and if the effect of piston rod diameter is
neglected, calculate: 1. pressure on slide bars, 2. thrust in the connecting rod, 3. tangential force on
the crank-pin, and 4. turning moment on the crank shaft.

9. A flywheel is mounted on a vertical shaft as shown in Fig. 23.8. The both ends of the shaft are
fixed and its diameter is 50 mm. The flywheel has a mass of 500 kg. Find the natural frequencies
of longitudinal and transverse vibrations. Take E = 200 GN/m2

10 Two pulleys, one 450 mm diameter and the other 200 mm diameter are on parallel shafts 1.95 ma part and
are connected by a crossed belt. Find the length of the required and the angle of contact between the belt
and each pulley. What power can be transmitted by the belt when the larger pulley rotates at 200 rpm, if
the maximum permissible tension in the belt is 1 KN and the coefficient off riction between the belt and
the pulley is 0.25?

11 An instrument vibrates with a frequency of 1 Hz when there is no damping. When the damping is
provided, the frequency of damped vibrations was observed to be 0.9 Hz.Find 1. The damping
factor and 2. Logarithmic decrement.

12. A, B, C and D are four masses carried by a rotating shaft at radii 100,125, 200 and 150 mm
respectively. The planes in which the masses revolve are spaced 600 mm apart and the mass of B,
C and D are 10 kg, 5 kg, and 4 kg respectively.Find the required mass A and the relative angular
settings of the four masses so that the shaft shall be in complete balance.

13 The trust of a propeller shaft in a marine engine is taken up by a number of collars integral with a shaft
which is 300 mm in diameter. The thrust on the shaft is 200KN and the speed is75 rpm.Taking  is equal
to 0.05 and assuming intensity of pressure as uniform and equal to 0.3 N/mm 2, find the external diameter
of the collar sand the number of collars required,if the power lost in friction is not to exceed 16KW

14 Four masses A, B, C and D as shown below are to be completely balanced.

A B C D
Mass (kg) ---- 30 50 40
Radius (mm) 180 240 120 150
The planes containing masses B and C are 300 mm apart. The angle between planes containing B
and C is 90°. B and C make angles of 210° and 120° respectively with D in the same sense. Find:
