First we will cover some basics that will help you understand how to apply flourishes. We will look at
what flourishing is, some do/don’t guidelines, and some warmup exercises—using both a monoline
pen (or pencil) as well as a brush pen (or pointed pen).

Next, we will cover where to apply flourishes. To do this, we will break down the alphabet into five
categories.

Each category will have four parts:

Flourishing essentially just means “fancifying” your calligraphy. It is difficult to break down to a science,
since the beauty of flourishing (especially in modern calligraphy) is in its free and natural movements.

Flourishing and embellishments can be added to your calligraphy in endless ways, but let’s take a look
at some examples.

For the purposes of choosing where to flourish, we will break the alphabet into five categories based
on how certain letters would be flourished.

To illustrate this, let’s look at a simple monoline alphabet with highlighted letters. We will cover each
of these categories further in the workbook.

FLOURISHING DO’S/DON’TS
Flourishing is definitely meant to be freeform. You should be using fluid, sweeping motions. However,
there are some useful do’s and don’ts that will help you feel more confident and happy with your
outcomes.

D O : T R Y T O M A I N TA I N O VA L
SHAPES WITHIN YOUR
FLOURISHES

You don’t want your flourishes to be very

pointed or narrow. Where possible, try
to look for opportunities to incorporate
proportional oval shapes.

DO: MAKE YOUR FLOURISHES AS OF F S ETTI NG

BALANCED AS POSSIBLE

You want to offset flourishes on top/bottom

and side/side as best you can.

DON’T: OVERFLOURISH!

Less is more with flourishing. Adding too

many flourishes is distracting from your
word.

DON’T: GIVE YOUR FLOURISHES

AS MUCH WEIGHT AS YOUR
LETTERS

DON’T: CROSS TWO THICK

DOWNSTROKES!

Sometimes you will need to “fudge it” and

not add pressure on your downstroke.

Try tracing each of these strokes with your pen or pencil. Focus on using your elbow and shoulder, not
planting your hand, which limits movement.

PRO TIP: Try also doing these strokes in different directions. It is totally fine to prefer flourishing in
one direction over the other—take the time now to figure out your preference!

Now try the same movements but add some pressures with your brush pen/nib. Remember—these
don’t need to be as thick as the downstrokes on your actual letters

DON’T FORGET: Don’t cross two heavy strokes, even if they are both downstrokes! Start to notice
where to pick and choose your heavy/light pieces.

T-STROKES

T-strokes (or cross-bars) are one of the first places to start flourishing, and they are a fantastic way to
practice freeform flourishes in general.

Give these flourishes a try with your pen/pecil. For these exercises, we won’t be using guidelines. You
should be practicing the feeling of flourishing without hesitation or limitations!

Now you can try the exact some t-strokes, but this time adding pressure. This is a great time to
practice not placing too much emphasis or pressure on the flourishes themselves—they should always
look secondary to the main downstroke on your t.

Extender FLOURISHES
Extender flourished belong on letters that don’t have loops,
but that are easily extended down below the baseline and
embellished. These letters include a, m, n, r, u and x. Depending on
the style of your flourishes, and how many other letters you have
with ascending/descending loops, you may also choose to use an
extender flourish on letters such as d, h, k, or l, for example.

Irregular
FLOURISHES
Irregular flourishes are the letters in the alphabet that don’t fit into
any of the other categories. They can often be flourished, but don’t
follow any standards. These letters include f, v and w. This group
also includes the letter t, which we also cover earlier in the book.

Forgotten
FLOURISHES
Forgotten flourished are the letters that you don’t generally
see embellished very much. They may be stylized (so, the o for
example), but they don’t often have flourishes added since they
don’t have ascenders, descenders, or anywhere to add an extender.
That being said, there are ways to flourish these where appropriate!
These letters include c, e, i, o, s and z.

Majuscule
FLOURISHES
Majuscule letters (as always) aren’t quite as simple to break down
into a process as minuscules are. That being said, try to keep in
mind all of the same rules:

1. Think about ovals in all of your flourishes

2. Try to keep all of your flourishes roughly the same size

3. Give your flourishes less weight than your letter

4. Don’t overflourish!

One common flourish you will see on many majuscule letters is this
double loop—as shown in the examples below.

Majuscule flourishes can be difficult—but they can completely

change the look and feel of your piece. The best way to learn
majuscule flourishes is just to experiment!

Flourishes are a great way to fill in gaps within lettering layouts. However, it can be difficult to line
things up properly—and until you have practiced a ton, it is very hard to do this right off the bat.

Below we will look at a technique that is great to use as a beginner when starting our with layouts.

S T E P 1 Write your words on regular guidelines, with no particular attention to the layout. Just get
the sizes of each word drawn appropriately.

S T E P 4 Use a pencil and start adding flourishes
in the noticeably empty spaces. Start with
ascenders, descenders or t-strokes, then identify
any unbalanced areads and add in any extender/
irregular flourishes if needed.

Notice that you can use a descending loop to

connect with an ascending loop, or a t-stroke as
well!

Note: try to make the majority of your flourishes

roughly the same size. Having huge and tiny
flourishes in the same piece often looks messy.
