Code of Practice
The Code can be found at the NZQA's website

Visa
You must at all times ensure you have a relevant visa for your chosen study program. If you require advice
please contact Immigration New Zealand.
If you have any questions about anything written here, please send me a message by using the Request an
Update button on your dashboard.
To comply with your Student visa, you must attend your course at all times, unless Unitec authorizes your
absence (e.g. medical certificate from a NZ registered doctor). If you have any further questions this can be
discussed with Immigration New Zealand.
Insurance
Travel and Medical Insurance is a New Zealand Government requirement, and compulsory for all
international students studying in NZ. It is also a requirement of your student visa. Unitec has arranged a
group policy with our default provider Uni-Care Travel Insurance. Unitec calculates insurance premiums
after enrolment and based on the length of your enrolment. The premium charge is to be paid ahead of
arrival in NZ. It is not included in and is separate from the tuition fee but can be paid at the same time as
your tuition fee. Insurance must be held for the duration of visa. If this isn't covered by group policy, the
student must arrange extra cover.
Scholarships
All scholarships must be applied for 2 weeks prior to the Programme start date. Students and agents can
apply for Scholarships via our website. Failing to apply in time can result in loss of Scholarship.
Scholarships are subject to approval and availability.

SCHEDULE 2
PLEASE READ: IMPORTANT INFORMATION
In addition to the International Student terms and conditions that you have already accepted, please note the
following:
1. Tuition Fees:
1.1. Tuition Fees stated in this offer letter are estimates only and are for a programme of study beginning
in the academic year that they are estimated for. All fees are reviewed annually and are subject to
change. Unitec will finalise the tuition fees for the year that you intend to enrol as soon as
practicable.
1.2. First period of enrolment: You will be notified of the finalised tuition fees for your first enrolment
period before the start date of your programme. Any difference between the estimated tuition fees
and the finalised tuition fees will be payable by you to Unitec. You should budget for an increase in
the tuition fees.
1.3. Subsequent enrolment periods: If you started your programme in or before Semester 1 2023,
your tuition fees will remain the same for each subsequent enrolment period (not including Summer
School). This is subject to you continuing in fulltime study at Unitec and not taking a semester break.
If you take a semester break or reduce to part-time, your tuition fees will be the fees that apply to the
academic year you enrol (or re-enrol) in. If you start your programme in or after Semester 2 2023,
your tuition fees for each subsequent enrolment period will be the fees that apply to the academic
year you enrol (or re-enrol) in.
2. The Code
2.1. Unitec is a signatory to the New Zealand Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code
of Practice (Code). As a signatory, Unitec is required to take all reasonable steps to protect you as
an international student and to ensure, so far as is possible, that you have a positive experience in
New Zealand that supports your educational achievement. You have rights under the Code and
Unitec has obligations. The Code can be accessed through the following link
https://www.legislation.govt.nz/regulation/public/2016/0057/latest/whole.html
2.2. Insurance requirements under the Code: You must have appropriate travel and medical
insurance for the duration of your time in New Zealand. This applies to your travel to and from New
Zealand, within New Zealand and, if travel is part of your study programme at Unitec, outside New
Zealand.
a) Group Policy: Unitec has arranged a group policy with our preferred provider Uni-Care Travel
Insurance. Unitec calculates insurance premiums after your enrolment is completed.
b) Period of insurance: The standard period of insurance under the group policy is from the 1st
day of the month in which your programme starts until the last day of your study visa. So, for
example, if your programme starts in July, you will be insured under the group policy from 1 July
Page 4 of 5
and if your programme starts in February, you will be insured under the group policy from 1
February.
c) Premium: The premium charge is to be paid ahead of your arrival in New Zealand. If the
premium increases between the time that you accept this offer and during the time that you are
enrolled at Unitec, this will result in an additional premium amount payable by you. Unitec will
do its best to give you advance notice of any increase. The insurance premium is separate to
your tuition fees but can be paid at the same time.
d) Things you need to think about: It is essential that you have insurance for the duration of
your visa1. If you intend to travel to New Zealand before the 1st day of the month in which
your programme starts or leave New Zealand later than the expiry date on the visa you
provided to Unitec, you will not be covered by the Unitec Group policy. You must advise
Unitec before the first day of the month if you require insurance cover outside of the standard
period of insurance or you must arrange extended insurance cover yourself. Details of the
insurance cover required can be accessed at section 16 of the Code (refer to above link).
e) Alternative Insurance: If, for some reason, you do not want to use the group policy and wish
to purchase an alternative insurance policy before departing your home country, you must
contact your International Student Advisor and provide proof of coverage from an insurer on the
list of Unitec Approved Insurers, and the full policy wording in English, by the first day of the
month in which your programme starts. This coverage must be effective from the date of your
flight to New Zealand (please send us a copy of your ticket) and extend to the last day of your
study visa. Unitec will review your coverage to confirm it complies with the Code and, if
necessary, provide you with a Student Insurance Waiver Form for you to complete before
excluding you from the Unitec Group Policy.
2.3. Visa requirements under the Code: You must have the necessary immigration status to study in
New Zealand. Unitec is required by law to report any known or suspect breaches of your visa
conditions to Immigration New Zealand and must notify Immigration New Zealand if you terminate
your enrolment. To comply with a student visa, you must attend your enrolled classes at all times.
To apply for a visa, please contact Immigration New Zealand www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-
visas/options/study
2.4. Link to Unitec Contract of Enrolment Terms and Conditions: International Applicants that you have
already accepted on submitting your application.
______________________________
1If your visa is not a study visa, then you can join the group policy for the time you are enrolled at Unitec.
You are responsible for ensuring that you have adequate insurance for the time before you enrol at Unitec
and after the enrolment period. If you wish to discuss extended cover, please contact your International
Student Advisor.
