TITLE : WINGS - INSPECTION OF MAIN LANDING GEAR SUPPORT RIB 5 LUGS

MODIFICATION No. : None

REASON/DESCRIPTION/OPERATIONAL CONSEQUENCES

During a routine maintenance 'A' check on an A320 aircraft, a crack was

discovered going completely through the forward lug of the RH, MLG Rib 5 fitting
(refer to the OIT 999.0060/04).

The ASB A320-57A1136 was issued to introduce a one time ultrasonic inspection to
a limited batch of aircraft (refer to OIT 999.0007/05). Few cases of crack
initiation on the MLG Rib 5 fitting were detected during the accomplishment of
the ASB A320-57A1136 (refer to TFU 57-26-13-002).

The examination and investigation of the MLG Rib 5 fitting revealed that the
crack initiated from pitting corrosion between the main fitting and the pintle
bushes.

Corrosion of the MLG rib 5 lug is addressed by the production modification

32025J2211. In service aircraft are addressed by the accomplishment of the
modification Service Bulletin A320-57-1118.

This Inspection Service Bulletin introduces a repetitive inspection program to

detect a crack in the RH and LH MLG Rib 5 fitting forward lugs.

Operators have the choice to perform a detailed visual inspection or an

ultrasonic inspection.

The ultrasonic inspection will detect any crack at an early stage and limit the
risk of extensive repairs. This earlier crack detection is not possible with the
detailed visual inspection.

This Service Bulletin is not applicable to aircraft post-modification

32025J2211.

Accomplishment of Service Bulletin A320-57-1118 (Mod. No. 32025J2211) cancels

the inspection requirements of this Service Bulletin.

Accomplishment of the Service Bulletin A320-57-1118

(Modification 32025J2211) or repair by Structural Repair
Manual (SRM) 57-26-13 cancels the inspection requirements of
this Service Bulletin. Modification 32025J2211 is embodied in
production before delivery on A318 aircraft MSN 1599, MSN 1939
and subsequent, A319 aircraft MSN 1774, MSN 1781 and
subsequent, A320 aircraft MSN 1823 and subsequent, and on A321
aircraft MSN 1783 and subsequent.

NOTE : To cancel the inspection requirements of this Service

Bulletin the repair referenced above has to be done on
the LH and the RH gear Rib 5 lugs.

B. CONCURRENT REQUIREMENTS

None

C. REASON

(1) History

During a routine maintenance 'A' check on an A320 aircraft, a crack

was discovered going completely through the forward lug of the RH,
MLG Rib 5 fitting (refer to the OIT 999.0060/04).

The ASB A320-57A1136 was issued to introduce a one time ultrasonic

inspection to a limited batch of aircraft (refer to OIT
999.0007/05). Few cases of crack initiation on the MLG Rib 5
fitting were detected during the accomplishment of the ASB
A320-57A1136 (refer to TFU 57-26-13-002).

The examination and investigation of the MLG Rib 5 fitting revealed

that the crack initiated from pitting corrosion between the main
fitting and the pintle bushes.

Corrosion of the MLG rib 5 lug is addressed by the production

modification 32025J2211. In service aircraft are addressed by the
accomplishment of the modification Service Bulletin A320-57-1118.

(2) Objective/Action

This Inspection Service Bulletin introduces a repetitive inspection

program to detect a crack in the RH and LH MLG Rib 5 fitting
forward lugs.

Operators have the choice to perform a detailed visual inspection

or an ultrasonic inspection.

The ultrasonic inspection will detect any crack at an early stage

and limit the risk of extensive repairs. This earlier crack
detection is not possible with the detailed visual inspection.

This Service Bulletin is not applicable to aircraft

post-modification 32025J2211.

Accomplishment of Service Bulletin A320-57-1118 (Mod. No.

32025J2211) cancels the inspection requirements of this Service
Bulletin.

(3) Advantages

The repeat inspections will make sure that any crack in the
inspection area on the forward lug of the MLG rib 5 fitting will be
identified.

(4) Operational/Maintenance Consequences

None

D. DESCRIPTION

Config. 01 thru Config. 02

To accomplish this Service Bulletin it is necessary to :

(1) Get access to the LH and RH MLG Rib 5 forward lug fitting.

(2) Do a visual, or an ultrasonic inspection.

(3) Close up and complete the documentation.

E. COMPLIANCE

(a) Accomplish the initial inspection within 8 days of aircraft

operation from the issue date of the AD.

NOTE (01) Operators have the choice to perform a detailed

visual inspection or an ultrasonic inspection (Refer
to Para 3.B INSPECTION).

1 In case of findings per the visual inspection, the MLG Rib

5 fitting will have to be replaced before the next flight.

2 In case of findings per the ultrasonic inspection and if no

crack is visible, aircraft can continue operation up to the
accomplishment of the SB A320-57-1118 and associated SRM
57-26-13 repair, providing a repeated visual inspection is

performed every 36 calendar hours with no findings. In case

of findings per visual inspection, the fitting will have to
be replaced before next flight.

NOTE : The ultrasonic inspection will detect any crack at

an early stage and limit the risk of extensive
repairs. This earlier crack detection is not
possible with the detailed visual inspection.

3 If there are no findings, a repeat inspection is necessary

until accomplishment of the SB A320-57-1118 at the
intervals that follow:

Config. 01 Aircraft

— Visual Inspection every 150 FC

or

— Ultrasonic Inspection (NTM 57-29-03) every 940 FC

Config. 02 Aircraft

— Visual Inspection every 100 FC

or

— Ultrasonic Inspection (NTM 57-29-04) every 630 FC

(b) Accomplishment of this Service Bulletin is expected to be

rendered mandatory by the issue of an Airworthiness Directive
(AD) published by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
It is anticipated that the AD will confirm the (thresholds
and/or intervals and/or date) given above but reference should
be made to the AD for confirmation of the mandated
accomplishment timescale.

F. APPROVAL

Approved under the EASA Design Organisation Approval No. EASA.21J.031

If an aircraft listed in the effectivity has a modification or repair

embodied that is not of AIRBUS origin, and which affects the content of
this Service Bulletin, the operator is responsible for obtaining
approval by its airworthiness authority for any adaptation necessary
before incorporation of the Service Bulletin.

G. MANPOWER

The manpower estimates given in this Service Bulletin are based on the
direct labor cost to do the work. These estimates assume that the work
will be done by experienced personnel, and may need to be revised
upwards to suit operator's circumstances. The estimates do not include
the time to prepare, plan or inspect the work. Manufacture and

3. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS

A. GENERAL

WARNING : MAKE SURE THAT YOU OBEY ALL THE WARNINGS AND THE CAUTIONS
INCLUDED IN THE REFERENCED PROCEDURES.

(1) Preparation

(a) Config. 01 thru Config. 02

1 Make sure the ground safety locks are in position on the

MLG (Refer to AMM 32-00-00 Page block 201).

2 Open the MLG doors (Refer to AMM 32-12-00 Page block 201).

3 Put the access platforms in position at zones 733 and 743.

4 Clean the inspection area using Solvent (Mat No. 11-026) .

(2) Standard Practices

B. INSPECTION

NOTE (01) Operators can choose between an ultrasonic Inspection as per

para 3.B.(1) or a detailed visual inspection as per para.
3.B.(2).

NOTE (02) The worksteps that follow are to be done on the wings (LH

NOTE : Cracks are most likely to occur between the 1.00

o'clock and the 5.00 o'clock positions on the aft face
of the Gear Rib forward lug and 7.00 o'clock and 11.00
o'clock position on the forward face of the Gear Rib
forward lug.

(b) Visually inspect the forward lug. Pay special attention to the
inboard face and to the forward and aft sides of the lug.

(c) If a crack is detected contact AIRBUS for instructions before

the next flight.

(d) If no cracks are detected refer to Para. 3.E.

E. CLOSE UP

(1) Config. 01 thru Config. 02

(a) Make sure the work areas are clean and clear of tools and
other items of equipment.

(b) Close MLG doors (Refer to AMM 32-12-00 Page block 201).
