Assignment 08 Mech. Prop. of Solids

This document is an assignment for Class XI Physics students at Achievers' Hub Sr. Sec. School, focusing on the mechanical properties of solids. It contains a series of questions related to concepts such as compressibility, bulk modulus, stress-strain relationships, and the effects of forces on materials. The assignment encourages students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems involving elasticity and material properties.

ACHIEVERS’ HUB SR. SEC.

SCHOOL DARI, DHARAMSHALA

CLASS – XI (Assignment)
SUBJECT - PHYSICS
TOPIC – Mechanical Properties of Solids

Q1. Write SI unit and dimensions of compressibility.

Q2. What is the value of bulk modulus for an incompressible liquid.

Q3. What will happen to the potential energy of the atoms of a solid when it is compressed? What happens when
a wire is stretched?

Q4. a) Which is more elastic – a rubber chord or a steel wire? Give reason.

b) Why bridges are declared unsafe after long use?

Q5. Draw stress-strain graph for a metallic wire when stretched upto the breaking point.

Q6. A and B are two wires. The radius of A is twice that of B. If they are stretched by the same load, then how
much is the stress on B to that on A?

Q7. To what depth must a rubber ball be taken in deep sea so that its volume is decreased by 0.1%? Given, bulk
modulus of rubber = 9.8×108 N/m2, density of sea water = 1000kg/m3 and g = 9.8m/s2

Q8. Two wires made of same material are subjected to forces in the ratio 1:4. Their lengths are in the ratio 2:1
and diameters in the ratio 1:3. What is the ratio of their extensions?

Q9. The edge of an aluminium cube is 10cm long. One face of the cube is firmly fixed to a vertical wall. A mass
of 100kg is then attached to the opposite face of the cube. The shear modulus of aluminium is 25GPa. What is
the vertical deflection of this face? (g = 10m/s2)

Q10. Find the elongation in a uniform wire of mass M, length L, cross – sectional area A and Young’s modulus
of elasticity Y under its own weight.
