❖ You should have Mathematical tables/ scientific calculator for this
examination.
❖ Answer all questions in SECTION A and any other two in SECTION B in
the spaces provided.
❖ Maximum marks to each part of a question are indicated.
❖ Candidates should answer the questions in English.
❖ No mobile phones allowed in exam room.

This paper consists of 2 printed pages.


Candidates should check the question paper to ascertain that all the pages are printed
as indicated and that no questions are missing.

SECTION A
Question 1
a) Define the following terms:
i. Soil structure
ii. Porosity
iii. Permeability
iv. Soil consistency
v. Soil texture (5 marks)
b) A soil sample has a weight of 0.85kg and the volume was found to be 3.5x10 M3 After

drying out the weight was reduced to 0.70 kg. the particle specific gravity test gave 2.6.
Determine the following:
i. Moisture content
ii. Dry density
iii. Void ratio
iv. Porosity
v. Degree of saturation (10 marks)

a) Distinguish between Rankine and Coulomb theory (6marks)
b) Discuss any three engineering practices of soil conservation (9marks)

Question 3
a) State five factors that influence soil erosion. (5 marks)
b) Illustrate the following soil and water conservation structures:
(i) Gabion
(ii) Negarims. (6 marks)
c) Outline three methods of soil particle movement by wind. (9 marks)

Question 4
a) Outline four factors that influence the rate of runoff (8 marks)
b) With the aid of a diagram explain the hydrologic cycle (12 marks)

Question 5
a) Difference between cohesive and non-cohesive soils (2 marks)
b) Outline the Atterberg Limits as used to evaluate soil consistency (6 marks)
c) With the aid of diagrams explain the three phase systems of soil (12 marks)

Question 6
a) Outline the three types of soil water (6 marks)
b) Explain the circumstances under which the construction of a cut-off-drain will be necessary
