Narration

The art of reporting the words of a speaker is called Narration.

There are two main ways of reporting the words of a speaker.
1. Direct Speech
2. Indirect Speech.
Rules of change of Pronouns

Rule No 1.
1st Person pronoun of Reported speech is changed according to the Subject of Reporting verb.
Direct: She says, “I am in tenth class.”
Indirect: She says that she is in tenth class.
Direct: I say, “I am an honest man.”
Indirect: I say that I am an honest man.
Rule No 2.
2nd Person pronoun of Reported speech is changed according to Object of Reporting verb.
Direct: She says to me, “you have done your work”
Indirect: She tells me that I have done my work.
Direct: She says to her, “You have done your work”
Indirect: She tells her that she has done her work.
Direct: I say to them, “you have done your work.”
Indirect: I tell them that they have done their work.
Rule No 3.
3rd Person Pronoun of Reported speech is not changed.
Direct: He says, “He does not work hard”
Indirect: He says that he does not work hard.
Direct: Everybody says, “They have spoken the truth”
Indirect: Everybody says that they have spoken the truth.

Rules of change of verb or Tense

Rule No.1
If reporting verb is given in Present or Future tense then there will be no change in the verb or
tense of Reported speech
Direct: The teacher says, “Gayatri performs on the stage”
Indirect: The teacher says that Gayatri performs on the stage.
Direct: The teacher is saying, “Gayatri performs on the stage”
Indirect: The teacher is saying that Gayatri performs on the stage.
Direct: The teacher will say, “Gayatri is performing on the stage”
Indirect: The teacher will say that Gayatri is performing on the stage.

Rule No.2
If reporting verb is given in Past tense then the tense of the verb of Reported Speech will change
into corresponding Past tense.
Direct: The teacher said, “I am suffering from fever.”
Indirect: The teacher said that she was suffering from fever.
Direct: She said to me, “I took the breakfast in the morning”.
Indirect: She told me that she had taken the breakfast in the morning.

Corresponding Changes to past form in an indirect speech from the verb in Reported

Some of the exceptional cases of Rule 2

Exception 1:
If Reporting speech has Universal Truth or Habitual fact then there is no change in the
Tense.
Direct: Our teacher said, “The earth is round”
Indirect: Our teacher said that the earth is round.( Universal Truth)
Direct: Rajiv said to me, “He plays with right hand”
Indirect: Rajiv told me that he plays with the right hand.(Habitual fact)

Exception 2:
If reporting speech has Past Historical Fact then there is no change in the Tense.
Direct: Our teacher said, “Asoka left war after the conquest of Kalinga”.
Indirect: Our teacher said that Asoka left war after the conquest of Kalinga.

Exception 3:
If Reporting speech has two actions to be happening at a time when there is no change in
the Tense.
Direct: She said “My wife was making lunch when I was studying”
Indirect: She said that her wife was making lunch when she was studying.

Exception 4:
If Reporting speech has some Imagined Condition then there is no change in the Tense.
Direct: She said, “If I were rich, I would help him.”
Indirect: She said that if she were rich she would help her.
Exception 5:
If Reporting speech contains had 3rd form, to-infinitive and would, could, should, must,
might, ought to etc. then there is no change in the Tense.
Direct: She said to me, “You should obey your elders.”
Indirect: She told me that I should obey my elders.
Some other small changes that used to take place while changing Direct Speech to Indirect Speech.

Note:-An in indirect speech we talk about such incidents that are after the time of reporting
and had happened away from the place of reporting therefore the words that show nearness has to
be replaced by the words that show distance.
Some exception in these changes
1.Come is changed to go if there is some word given after come that shows nearness.
2. If this, here and now points to such a thing, place or time that is in front of the speaker then no
change takes place in Indirect Narration.

Rules for Change in Narration of different type of sentences

Type No 1. Assertive Sentences
Rule 1

 If there is no object after Reporting verb there it should not be changed.

 If there is some object after Reporting verb then say is changed
to tell, says to tells and said to told.
 According to the context said to can be replaced by replied, informed, stated, added,
remarked, asserted, assured, pleaded, reminded, reported or complained etc.
Rule 2
  Put conjunction that in place of “ ”.
 Change the pronouns of the Reported speech as enlisted earlier.
Examples showing some Assertive Sentences Changed into Indirect form
Direct: She said to me, “I shall sleep now”
Indirect: She told me that she would sleep then.
Direct: He said, “My brother’s marriage comes off next month.”
Indirect: He said that his brother’s marriage would come off the following month.

Type No 2. Interrogative Sentences

Rule 1

 An interrogative sentence is meant to ask questions, therefore, Reporting verb said/said to is

changed to asked.
 Said to can also be changed into enquired or demanded
Rule 2

 If question is formed with the help of any of the helping verbs like is/are/am, was/were,
has/have, do/does, will/would etc then “ __” are to be replaced by if or whether
 If the question is formed with the help of words starting with “Wh” like who, whose, what,
whom, when etc (also known as W family) or How then to replace “___” no conjunction is
used.
Rule 3

 In these sentences question form of the sentence is removed and full-stop is put at the end of
the sentence.
 Helping verb is /are/am, was/were etc should be put after the subject.
 If the interrogative sentence is expressing positive feeling then do/does of the Direct speech
is removed while converting it into Indirect speech.
 If the interrogative sentence is expressing negative feeling then do/does of the Direct speech
is changed into did while converting it into Indirect speech.
 Did or has/have the interrogative sentence is changed to had.
Rule 4

 Pronouns and verbs are changed according to the set rule of Narration.

He said to me,” My parents, as well as yours, left for Mecca yesterday.”

She said,” I love my country very dearly.”

You said,” My brother has given me this pen.”
You said that your brother had given you that pen.
She said to us,” Yes, I shall invite you to tea on my birthday.”
She said to us that she would invite us to tea on her birthday.
Mother said to us,” God helps those, who help themselves.”
Mother said to us that God helps those, who help themselves.
He said to me,” All right, I forgive you this time.”
He said to me that he forgave me that time.
They said to him,” Sir, we are sorry for telling a lie to your face today.”
They said to him respectfully that they were sorry for telling a lie to his face that day.
He said to me,” I slept in this room last night.”
He said to me that he had slept in that room last night.
The teacher said to the students,” Water keeps its level.”
The teacher said to the students that water keeps its level.
She said,” I was reading the book.”
She said that she had been reading the book.
He said,” I obeyed my parents.”
He said that he had obeyed his parents.
We said to him,” Sir, we are very sorry for what we did.”
We said to him respectfully that we were very sorry for what we had done.
He said to me,” All right, Sir, I shall see you tomorrow.”
He said to me respectfully that he would see me the next day.
You said to him,” Yes, I have been taking these medicines for a long.”
You said to him respectfully that you had been taking those medicines for a long.
He said to us,” I am leaving for your hometown tonight.”
He said to us that he is leaving for our hometown that night.
“Yes, Sir,” said they,” We have carried out your orders.”
They said respectfully that they had carried out his orders.
The old man said to his sons,” Man proposes, God, disposes.”
The old man said to his sons that man proposes that God disposes.
Father said to his sons,” I shall buy you your books tomorrow.”
Father said to his sons that he would buy them their books the next day.
The peon said to the headmistress,” Madam, I forgot to post this letter yesterday.”
The peon said to the headmistress respectfully that he had forgotten to post that letter the
previous day.
“Yes, mother,” said Javid,” I slapped the servant on his face, but I am sorry for that
now.”
Javid said to his mother that he had slapped the servant on his face, but he was sorry for
that then.
You said to me,” I was learning this poem by heart yesterday.”
You said to me that you had been learning that poem by heart the previous day.
“My sons,” said she,” Union is strength.”
She said to her sons that union is strength.
She said to us,” Sir, I did not sleep the whole night, because your dogs were barking
at somebody.”
She said to us respectfully that she had not slept the whole night, because our dogs had
been barking at somebody.
“Christmas comes but once a year,” said the teacher to his pupils.
The teacher said to his pupils that Christmas comes but once a year.
She said to her friends,” I shall take you all to the zoo, tomorrow morning.”
She said to her friends that she would take them all to the zoo the next day morning.
“She was married last year,” said the mother to her neighbor.
The mother said to her neighbor that she had been married last year.
He said to me,” You play a double role in this affair.”
He said to me that I played a double role in that affair.
I said to him,” We have met each other today after a very long time.”
I said to him that we had met each other that day after a very long time.
“The earth,” said the teacher, “is round.”
The teacher said that the earth is round.
They said to us,” We respect you very much.”
They said to us that they respected us very much.
She said to me,” I am your next-door neighbor.”
She said to me that she was my next-door neighbor.
The teacher said,” Virtue is its reward.”
The teacher said that virtue is its reward.
She said to me,” Sir, I have been living here in this house since July 23.”
She said to me respectfully that she had been living there in that house since July 23.
She said,” I love Pakistan.”
She said that she loved Pakistan.
He said,” He is a native of Iran.”
He said that he was a native of Iran.
He said to them,” You are cheating me.”
He said to them that they were cheating him.
You said to me,” You have been very kind to me.”
You said to me that I had been very kind to you.
She said to us,” I have been teaching your sister since yesterday.”
She said to us that she had been teaching our sister since the previous day.
You said to him,” She will be here today.”
You said to him that she would be there that day.
You said to her,” I have returned from Quetta to this place yesterday.”
You said to her that you had returned from Quetta to that place the previous day.
He said to her,” Madam, I have served you in this house for six years.”
He said to her respectfully that he had served her in that house for six years.
He said to them,” These boys have called me names today.”
He said to them that those boys had called him names that day.
The old man said,” History repeats itself.”
The old man said that history repeats itself.
She said to us,” I have beaten six eggs for you.”
She said to us that she had beaten six eggs for us.
You said to him,” Sir, I have paid the rent of this house.”
You said to him respectfully that you had paid the rent of that house.
She said to him,” I have been learning these verses from the Holy Quran by heart.”
She said to him that she had been learning those verses from the Holy Quran by heart.
The teacher said to the students,” I shall give you a test in English tomorrow.”
The teacher said to the students that he would give them a test in English the next day.
She said to me,” Every cockfight is best on its dung-hill.”
She said to me that every cockfight is best on its dunghill.
She said to the doctor,” I shall be going Murree tomorrow.”
She said to the doctor that she would be going to Murree the next day.
We said to him,” Sir, we are sorry for what we did.”
We said to him respectfully that we were sorry for what we had done.
She said,” I have spoken the truth to you now.”
She said that she had spoken the truth to me then.
You said to us,” I have been waiting for you since yesterday.”
You said to us that you had been waiting for us the previous day.
The villagers said,” Wolves may lose their teeth, but not their nature.”

Mother said to us,” Those who dig a pit for others, fall into it themselves.”

She said to me,” I shall write a letter to your mother tomorrow.”

He said to us,” I planted these trees here in this garden yesterday.”
He said to us that he had planted those trees there in that garden the previous day.
“Nasim,” said Jamillah,” you stole these earrings from my purse yesterday.”
Jamillah said to Nasim that she had stolen those earrings from her purse the previous day.
“Well, Javid,” said she,” you were knocking at my door this morning.”
She said to Javid that he had been knocking at her door that morning.
The policeman said to them,” All right, I shall take you to the police station tonight
for knocking me down with your car.”
The policeman said to them that he would take them to the police station that night for
knocking him down with their car.
She said to him,” Sir, I left my pen here on this table yesterday.”
She said to him respectfully that she had left her pen there on that table the previous day.
She said to me,” Well, I shall return you, your book tomorrow.”
She said to me that she would return my book the next day.
You said to him,” All is well that ends well.”
You said to him that all is well that ends well.
She said,” God is one.”
She said that God is one.
She said to them,” Virtue is its reward.”
She said to them that virtue is its reward.
He said to me,” You sent a telegram to me only yesterday.”
He said to me that I had sent a telegram to him only the previous day.
They said to us,” The evil that men do lives after them.”

“Yes,” said the teacher to the students,” you can play this match tomorrow.”
The teacher said to the students that they could play that match the next day.
“Well,” said the landlord to me,” You will have to pay me rent for six months in
advance.”
The landlord said to me that I would have to pay him rent six months in advance.
The doctor said to him,” I am too busy these days to pay a visit to your house.”
The doctor said to him that he was too busy those days to pay a visit to his house.
The visitor said to the manager,” Sir, my son is ill today and he cannot come to work
in the factory.”
The visitor told the manager respectfully that his son was ill that day and he could not
come to work in the factory.
They said to the S.H.O.,” Our lives are in danger and we have come to you for help.”
They said to the S.H.O. that their lives were in danger and they had come to him for help.
She said to him,” I have every sympathy with you in your grief.”
She said to him that she had every sympathy with him in his grief.
Negative Assertive Sentences
“No, Zahid,” said they,” You did not lose the game, yesterday.”
They said to Zahid that he had not lost the game the previous day.
They said,” We do not say anything against our friends.”
They said that they did not say anything against their friends.
We said to him,” You have not told us the truth in this case.”
We said to him that he had not told us the truth in that case.
He said to me,” No, sir, I did not quarrel with your servant yesterday.”
He said to me respectfully that he had not quarreled with my servant the previous day.
The doctor said to her,” I did not ask you to wait for me here in my clinic till 11’O
clock.”
The doctor said to her that he had not asked her to wait for him there in his clinic till 11’O
clock.
She said to us,” Now, I am not going to teach you everything.”
She said to us that she was not then going to teach us everything.
You said,” This book is not mine.”
You said that that book was not yours.
They said,” No, we do not live in this house.”
They said that they did not live in that house.
“Life,” said he,” is not a bed of roses.”

suffering from fever.”
She said to him respectfully that her brother had not come to school that day, because he
was suffering from fever.
He said,” I am not going to the post office.”
He said that he was not going to the post office.
He said to them,” I shall not return these books to you tomorrow.”
He said to them that he would not return those books to them the next day.
My friend said to me,” I did not return from Quetta last evening.”
My friend said to me that he had not returned from Quetta the previous evening.
He said to us,” I have not done my duty and it is not your turn now to do yours.”
He said to us that he had not done his duty and it was not our turn then to do ours.
He said to me,” Sir, I have not lost the purse on my way to the market.”
He said to me respectfully that he had not lost the purse on his way to the market.

“Why,” said the doctor to me,” did you not take this medicine yesterday?”
The doctor asked me why I had not taken that medicine the previous day.
“My son, where are you now coming from?” said the old man.
The old man asked his son where he was coming from then.
She said to me,” What is your name?”
She asked me what my name was.
I said to him,” Where do you live in this city?”
I asked him where he lived in that city.

“Where are you going now?” said I to my servant.

The policeman said to him,” Why do you observe the traffic rules?”

She said to her teacher,” Sir, why are you angry with me?”
She asked her teacher respectfully why he was angry with her.
Father said to him,” Why have you beaten the servant now?”
Father asked him why he had beaten the servant then.
We said to our neighbor,” Why was our house locked?”
We asked our neighbor why our house had been locked.
She said to her,” What was your sister saying to you yesterday?”
She asked her what her sister had been saying to her the previous day.
I said to the carpenter,” Why did you not complete my work yesterday?”
I asked the carpenter why he had not completed my work the previous day.
“Why are you sitting here, Salman?” said his sister.
Salman’s sister asked Salman why he was sitting there.
“What are you doing here, Nadeem?” said the father to his son.
The father asked his son, Nadeem, what he was doing there.
The wolf said to the lamb,” Why did you call me names last year?”
The wolf asked the lamb why he had called him names the previous year.
“How can I give you a short measure, madam?” said the shopkeeper to her.
The shopkeeper asked her respectfully how he could give her a short measure.
You said to him,” Where are you coming from?”
You asked him where he was coming from.
She said to him,” Why were you knocking at my door just now?”
She asked him why he had been knocking at her door just then.
He said to her,” Madam, at what time can I see you tomorrow?”
He asked her respectfully at what time he could see her the next day.
She said to Nadeem,” What were you doing yesterday?”
She inquired of Nadeem what he had been doing the previous day.
“Where are you going, John?” said David.
David said to John where he was going.
He said to me,” Why did you steal my pen from this box?”
He asked me why I had stolen his pen from that box.
She said to them,” Where did you leave your servant yesterday?”
She asked them where they had left their servant the previous day.
“When will this train reach Peshawar?” said the passenger to the guard.
The passenger asked the guard when that train would reach Peshawar.
She asked the stranger,” What is your name?”
She asked the stranger what his name was.
The constable said to the two young men,” Where are you coming from in the dead of
night?”
The constable asked the two young men where they were coming from in the dead of night.
“What will you charge me for dressing my hair?” said a little girl to the barber.
A little girl asked the barber what he would charge her for dressing her hair.
He said to the doctor,” when should I come to you for getting my eyes test?”
He asked the doctor when he should come to him for getting his eyes tested.
He said to me,” Where have you been all these days?”
He asked me where I had been all those days.

Interrogative Sentences That Start With A Verb

“May I come in, madam?” said she to the principal.
She asked the principal respectfully if she might come in.
He said to me,” Are you going to school now?”
He inquired of me if I was going to school then.
You said to him,” Have you broken my jug today?”
You asked him if he had broken your jug that day.
We said to her,” Did you beat our servant yesterday?”
We inquired of her if she had beaten our servant the previous day.
He said to you,” Will you go to the pictures tonight?”
He asked you whether you would go to the pictures that night.
She said to him,” Did you lose your pen here?”
She asked him if he had lost his pen there.

I inquired of the postman if there was any letter for me that day.
She said to him,” Did you iron my shirt yesterday?”
She asked him if he had ironed her shirt the previous day.
He said to me,” Has it been raining here since morning?”
He inquired of me if it had been raining there since morning.
You said to her,” Did you buy these cups and saucers yesterday?”
You asked her if she had bought those cups and saucers the previous day.
He said to the stranger,” Are you in your senses now?”
He inquired of the stranger if he was in his senses then.
She said to her brother,” Were you feeling any pain in your chest yesterday?”
She asked her brother if he had been feeling any pain in his chest the previous day.
He said to them,” Will you be going to Karachi by the morning train tomorrow?”
He inquired of them if they would be going to Karachi by the morning train the next day.
The old man said to the beggar,” Were you knocking at my door just now?”
The old man asked the beggar if he had been knocking at his door just then.
The shopkeeper said to me,” Did you give me a ten-rupee note for these cakes of soap?”
The shopkeeper asked me if I had given him a ten-rupee note for those cakes of soap.
I said to her,” Have you consulted any doctor today?”
I asked her whether she had consulted any doctor that day.
She said to him,” Will you lend me your pen for today?”
She asked him if he would lend her his pen for that day.
I said to them,” Will you build a hospital over here?”
I inquired of them if they would build a hospital over there.
They said to us,” Were you sleeping in this room yesterday?”
They asked us whether we had been sleeping in that room the previous day.
Mother said to my friend,” Have you paid the fine today?”
Mother asked my friend if he had paid the fine that day.
“Are you suffering from fever now?” said I to the beggar.
I asked the beggar if he was suffering from fever then.
