Lesson 1: What is Excel? + Tour of the Interface

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program used to record, analyze, and visualize data. It is part of

the Microsoft Office suite and is commonly used in business, finance, data analysis, and

administration.

**Key Elements of the Interface:**

- **Workbook**: A file containing one or more worksheets.

- **Worksheet**: A grid of rows and columns where data is entered.

- **Ribbon**: The top menu bar with tabs like Home, Insert, Page Layout, etc.

- **Formula Bar**: Displays the content of the selected cell.

- **Name Box**: Shows the cell address (e.g., A1).

- **Cells**: Individual boxes where you input data (intersection of rows and columns).

Lesson 2: Understanding Cells, Rows, and Columns

Excel is built around a grid system made of rows and columns.

- **Rows**: Horizontal lines labeled with numbers (1, 2, 3...).

- **Columns**: Vertical lines labeled with letters (A, B, C...).

- **Cells**: The intersection of a row and a column (like B2 or A1).

You can select a single cell, a range of cells, entire rows or columns. Cells can contain:

- Text

- Numbers

- Formulas

- Dates

Lesson 3: Formatting Basics

Formatting helps improve the appearance of your spreadsheet.

- **Font Style**: Change font type, size, bold, italic, underline.

- **Cell Color**: Apply fill color to highlight data.

- **Borders**: Add borders around cells for better visual separation.

- **Text Alignment**: Align text to the left, center, or right.

- **Number Format**: Change numbers to currency, date, percentage, etc.

**Try this**: Select a few cells and apply bold font, center alignment, and a light yellow fill.
