INTRODUCTION
COMPANY PROFILE
COMPANY PROFILE
HISTORY
Bulan, a municipality in the province of Sorsogon, Philippines, boasts a rich history that
reflects the broader cultural and historical narratives of the Bicol region. The area now
known as Bulan was originally inhabited by indigenous groups long before Spanish
colonization. These early inhabitants practiced subsistence farming and fishing, taking
advantage of the fertile land and abundant marine resources.
The founding of Bulan As a formal settlement is traditionally traced back to the late 16 th
or early 17th century. Spanish colonizers, in their effort to extend their control and spread
Christianity, established missions and settlements throughout the Bicol Peninsula.
Bulan, like many other towns in the Philippines, grew around a central church
established by Spanish missionaries. The town’s name, “Bulan,” which means “moon” in
the local dialect, is believed to have been derived from the shape of the original
settlement area or from local legends and folklore.
During the Spanish colonial period, Bulan developed into a modest yet thriving
community. The town’s economy was primarily based on agriculture, with rice, abaca (a
type of banana plant used for its fiber), and coconut as the main products. The Spanish
influence is still evident in Bulan’s architecture, local traditions, and religious practices.
The construction of the Saint Remedios Parish Church in the late 19 th century is a
testament to this influence. The church remains a significant landmark in Bulan,
symbolizing the town’s colonial past and enduring faith.
The turn of the 20th century brought significant changes to Bulan, as it did to the rest of
the Philippines. Following the Spanish-American War in 1898, the Philippines became a
territory of the United States. Under American rule, Bulan experienced infrastructural
2
improvements, including the establishment of public schools and the introduction of new
agricultural techniques. The focus on education led to a more literate and civic-minded
populace, laying the foundation for future local governance.
During World War II, Bulan, like many other parts of the Philippines, was occupied by
Japanese forces. This period was marked by hardship and resistance, as local guerrilla
groups fought against the occupiers. The end of the war and subsequent independence
of the Philippines in 1946 ushered in a new era for Bulan. The post-war years were a
time of rebuilding and growth, as the town worked to recover from the devastation of the
conflict.
In the latter half of the 20 th century and into the 21 st century, Bulan has continued to
develop both economically and socially. The municipality has diversified its economy,
with fishing, agriculture, and commerce playing significant roles. The introduction of
modern technology and infrastructure has improved the quality of life for its residents.
Education and healthcare services have also seen substantial improvements,
contributing to the overall development of the community.
Bulan’s cultural heritage remains vibrant, with traditional festivals and events such as the
Padaraw Festival, which celebrates the town’s patron saint and showcases local culture,
food, and traditions. These events not only preserve Bulan’s historical identity but also
promote tourism and community pride.
The history of Bulan, Sorsogon, is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of its
people. From its early beginnings as a settlement in the shadow of Spanish colonization
to its current status as a thriving municipality, Bulan’s journey reflects the broader
narrative of the Philippines. The town has managed to preserve its rich cultural heritage
while embracing modernization and development. As Bulan continues to grow, it
remains a vibrant community, proud of its past and optimistic about its future.
MISSION and VISION
Mission
