This document outlines the requirements for surface protection of ferrous metal parts against corrosion, specifically through the application of zinc layer coverings. It details the quality standards, coating procedures, layer thickness specifications, and approved methods for ensuring corrosion resistance. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of adherence to specified standards and the prevention of hydrogen embrittlement during the coating process.

Surface protection for ferrous metal RON 444

parts w ith high corrosion protection edition 2014508

requirements page 1 of 3

1. Item:

Surface protection of ferrous metal parts that are subjected to moderate exposure to
corrosion by agressive media (e.g. salt spread during winter in non-exposed locations)
during use in line with the contract.

2. Range of application:
This regulation contains the requirements for applying zinc layer coverings (zinc
particles and up to 10% aluminium particles) to ferrous metal parts to protect against
corrosion. Suitable measures are to be taken to prevent hydrogen induced
embrittlement on parts with a surface hardness > 390 HV or on parts with a tensile
strength of Rm>1000 MPa.
Parts with threads <M6 can normally not be coated using zinc particle coverings.

3. Quality of coating:

In their solidified state, zinc particle coverings are to consist mainly of metallic
components and be metallically conductive. They may not contain sexavalent
chromium. The majority of the metal particles must be aligned parallel to the surface in
order to avoid elevated creep rates.

Level of baking temperature

for Geomet max. 320°C
for Delta Protekt KL 100: max. 240°C

Corrosion:

Tests in accordance with EN ISO 9227 are to be conducted for 129 hours without
surface corrosion (zinc corrosion, white rust) or other visible change and for 720 hours
without corrosion to the base metal (red rust) on areas that are not threaded/tapped.
These requirements are to be fulfilled after heat treatment for 24 hours at 100°C

Adhesion:

In case of doubt, adhesion is to be tested using adhesive tape. (The covering must
remain intact when textile adhesive tape with an adhesive strength of 7+/-1N per
25mm width is applied firmly by hand and then ripped away perpendicular to the
surface. It is permissible for small quantities of the covering material to adhere to the
tape.)

2005603 Item 3 temperature of heat treatment corrected on 100°C
2005184 Item. 3 temperature of heat treatment reduced at 70°C
2004584 Heat treatment before testing of the corrosion protection changed.

Other points:

The overall friction coefficient of connecting elements with metric threads is to be

within 0.09 and 0.15 in accordance with VDA 235-1.

Colour:

Silver

4. Layer thickness:

Layer thickness is to be measured using standard layer thickness measuring

procedures. In cases of doubt, metallographic analysis is to be conducted on a
longitudinal cross-section as per DIN EN ISO 1463.

On bolts, the layer thickness is to be measured on the bolt head (DIN EN ISO 4042
and DIN EN ISO 10683.)

Layer thickness must comply with the tolerance specified for the relevant threaded
parts. Significant increases in layer thickness compared to the minimum layer
thickness specified require corresponding dimensional adjustment in the threaded part
prior to galvanizing. (DIN EN ISO 4042 and DIN EN ISO 10683.) The dimensional
accuracy of coated threaded/tapped parts still apply if the threaded ring gauge can be
screwed on with a maximum torque of 0.001d3 [Nm] (d = inner diameter of thread
in mm).

It must also be ensured that the function of the threaded parts is not negatively
influenced by severe deviations in layer thickness in the contact areas and tool contact
surfaces.

Accumulations under support surfaces may not exceed a thickness of 25 mm.

5. Approved procedures:

Geomet 321 + Plus VL overall layer thickness min. 8 mm

Delta Protekt KL 100 + VH301 overall layer thickness min. 8mm

If parts of drawings without threaded/tapped sections specify other layer thicknesses,

these are to be implemented in accordance with the durations for salt spray testing
indicated in the drawing.
