Teaching Quarter 2nd Quarter
Dates/ and
Time
I- OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard The learners demonstrait an understanding of characteristics of
comets,
Meteors, and asteroids.
B. Performance Standard Discuss weather or not beliefs and practices about comets and
meteors have scientific basis.
C. Learning MELC: (S8ES-IIg-22)
Competency/Objectives
Learning Objectives:
a. Compare and contrast comets, meteors, and asteroids.
b. Predict the appearance of comets based on recorded data of
previous appearances; and
c. Explain the regular accurance of meteor showers.
II- CONTENT/TOPIC Other Members of the Solar System: Comets, Meteors, Asteroids
III- LEARNING RESOURCES
A. References
1. Teacher’s Guide pages K-12 science 8 Curriculum Guide, Page. 140-141
2. Learner’s Materials pages
3. Textbook pages
4. Additional Materials from
Learning Resource (LR)portal
IV- PROCEDURES
A. ENGAGE Begin with a captivating visual or video of a recent meteor shower
and a passing comet. Ask students:
"What do you notice about these celestial events?"
"Have you ever seen a meteor or a comet? What did it look like?"
Activity:
Show a short, dramatic video of a meteor shower and a comet
passing close to Earth. Follow with a quick brainstorming session:
"What do you think causes these phenomena?" Write their ideas on
the board.
B. EXPLORE Activity:
"Celestial Body Detective" Workshop (as previously described)
Divide students into small groups.
Provide images and data of comets, meteors, and asteroids.
Task: Fill out comparison tables on features such as composition,
appearance, origin, and movement.
Each group presents their findings.
Purpose:
Encourage students to observe, analyze, and compare real data,
fostering inquiry and curiosity.
C. EXPLAIN Facilitate a discussion guided by the students’ observations.
Clarify definitions:
Comets: Icy bodies with tails that develop when near the Sun.
Meteors: Bright streaks caused by meteoroids burning in Earth’s
atmosphere.
Asteroids: Rocky or metallic bodies mainly in the asteroid belt.
Use diagrams and models to illustrate structures and compositions.
Explain why meteor showers recur annually (Earth passing through
debris trails of comets).
D. ELABORATE Activity:
Forecasting Celestial Events
Students research upcoming comet appearances and meteor
showers.
They create a forecast poster or digital presentation explaining when
and where these events will occur.
Discuss how historical data helps scientists predict future
appearances, emphasizing the importance of patterns and regularity.
Discussion Questions:
Why do some comets reappear after many years?
How do scientists use past data to predict meteor showers?
E. EVALUATE Assessment Questions:
1. Multiple Choice:
Which celestial body develops a tail when near the Sun?
a) Asteroid
b) Comet
c) Meteorite
Answer: b) Comet
2. True or False:
Meteor showers happen because Earth passes through debris left by
comets.
Answer: True
3. Fill in the Blanks:
An asteroid is mostly made of ________ or ________, while a comet
contains significant amounts of ice and dust.
Answer: rock, metal
4. Multiple Choice:
What causes meteors to streak across the sky?
a) Movement of asteroids
b) Burning meteoroids in Earth’s atmosphere
c) Reflection from comets
Answer: b) Burning meteoroids in Earth’s atmosphere
5. Short Answer:
Explain why meteor showers occur regularly each year.
Answer: Because Earth passes through the debris left by comets in
their orbits, causing meteoroids to burn up in our atmosphere at
predictable times.
