asymmetric or 10G upstream/10G downstream symmetric 10G-EPON
interfaces that comply with the IEEE 802.3av standard.
− The public interface line card provides BITS clock input and output, 1PPS+ToD
phase input and output, as well as power and battery detection interfaces and
environmental detection interfaces. It works with the temperature, humidity,
smog, water immersion and door access sensors to implement environmental
detection.
⚫ Control and switching module: The switch module is not responsible for searching
the service forwarding interface (implemented by each service interface line card). It
implements rapid traffic switch between line cards through the self-adaptive routing
mechanism. The main control module supports inputting external reference clock
and phase from the line card, and assigns the optimal one to each service line card.
The system CPU implements configuration, management, driving, and diagnosis on
service cards by controlling the card CPUs. The control and switch module of the
ZXA10 C680 are separated from each other. The switch module is independent from
the control module and the ZXA10 C680 provides maximum four planes. The control
and switch module of the ZXA10 C600/C650 is integrated on the same card. The
number of the switch module and the control module is the same and the ZXA10
C600/C650 provides maximum two planes.
⚫ Uplink interface module: Provides uplink GE or 10GE interface at the network side.
2.2.2 Service Flows
The ZXA10 C680/C600/C650 provides a fast forwarding channel and a slow forwarding
channel for service flows.

ZXA10 C680&C600&C650 Product Description
⚫ Fast forwarding channel: Service flows pass the service interface card, switch card,
and uplink card. In the upstream direction, GEM frames are decapsulated to Ethernet
frames, and then sent to the uplink interface after Ethernet switch on the switch card.
In the downstream direction, Ethernet frames are switched to the GPON line card by
the switch card, sent to GEM port according to service mapping rules, and then
encapsulated to GEM frames.
⚫ The slow forwarding channel processes the protocol packets on CPUs. The packets
can be either terminated on CPUs, or sent back to the forwarding channel by CPUs.
The common processing includes adding subscriber line ID, DHCP snooping, ARP
inspection, IGMP snooping, and Ethernet OAM.

2.3 Software Architecture
The ZXA10 C680/C600/C650 consists of an operating support subsystem, a bearing and
driving subsystem, a service control subsystem and a system management subsystem.
The ZXA10 C680/C600/C650 series support the network slicing function. Each subsystem
isolates cross-card communications and message channels, configuration data and state
data, and the resources on the forwarding panel.
Figure 2-14 Software Architecture of the ZXA10 C680/C600/C650
⚫ Operating support subsystem: includes a distributed operating system, supports
system control, version loading, inter-card communication, progress scheduling,
memory management, message communication, file system management, fault
diagnosis, and timer management.
⚫ Bearing and driving subsystem: abstracts the hardware and interfaces, drives the
hardware to carry and forward services, shields the bottom layer hardware feature
from the upper layer software, provides general functional interfaces. The ZXA10
C680/C600/C650 series use a distributed forwarding architecture. The forwarding
table items and the packet processing are distributed on each line card. After the
bearing and driving subsystem of the line card obtains the configuration data from
the forwarding plane, the line card can implement service forwarding independently
if the configuration data is not updated. The offline of any line card will not affect the
communication among other line cards.

FTTH (Fiber to the home) is to connect equipment in the central office to the subscriber
home using optical fibers. The bandwidth of the optical fiber is occupied by the home only.
In physical architecture, FTTH uses optical fibers to connect OLT and ONUs, and ONUs
(also named ONTs) are deployed at subscribers’ home to provide UNIs to subscribers.
Figure 5-1 shows the FTTH network topology using the PON technology.
Figure 5-1 FTTH Network Topology
In the FTTH network, the following factors should be considered when you plan where to
deploy the OLT: The OLT should be deployed in a way that makes management and
maintenance easy. The PON technology can provide an access distance of over 20km,.
The OLT should be deployed in a way that reduces the cost of optical cables. In most
cases, the OLT is deployed in the central equipment room or the equipment room of the
residential neighborhood. The ONT should be put in a place that is hidden but convenient
for maintenance operations. The ONU is usually installed within the home. Do not install
the ONU at the door or in the corridor. In the home, the ONU can be placed in the
intelligent terminal box or on the desktop with an optical fiber outlet.
FTTH terminals are divided into two types: One type is ONU with uplink PON interfaces,
with home services carried on CAT-5 cables or WLAN (built-in or external AP), and the
other type is SFU + HGU for reconstructed scenarios or if the optical fiber can be routed
to the door only.

ZXA10 C680&C600&C650 Product Description
The ZXA10 C680/C600/C650 acts as an OLT in an FTTH network to provide multiple
services including voice, digital home, broadband Internet (wired or wireless), IPTV, and
CATV. The OLT works with series ONUs/ONTs to deliver multi-service access in the wired,
wireless, WAN, and LAN ways.
5.2 FTTB Network Application
FTTB(Fiber to the building) supports two application scenarios: FTTB+LAN and
FTTB+DSL.
Figure 5-2 shows the FTTB network topology using the xPON technology.
Figure 5-2 FTTB Network Topology
FTTB+LAN deploys a fiber to the building and a CAT-5 cable to the home. With a copper
access range of less than 100 m, this mode is mainly applied in scenarios where CAT-5
cables are routed to the home in new buildings and modernized neighborhoods to provide
high bandwidth and wide coverage. Because FTTB+LAN saves fiber resources, PON
ports, and OLTs, its deployment cost is lower than that of FTTH when the user density is
high. OLTs can be centrally deployed in the equipment building or distributed in access
points, with centralized deployment being the preferred mode. The LAN MDU is used as
the ONU, generally deployed in an integrated information box in the corridor, and shared
by multiple users. The MDU covers a range of no more than 100 m and provides
voice/data/video services through a built-in IAD. The MDU comes in two types: pure-
broadband and broadband/narrowband hybrid. Considering user bandwidth, MDU
capacity, and distribution, it is recommended that no more than 16 LAN MDUs should be
connected to each PON port. The MDU has two forms: fixed-configuration and plug-in.
The fixed-configuration MDU provides a mixture of pure-broadband and

ZXA10 C680&C600&C650 Product Description
broadband/narrowband hybrid. The plug-in MDU offers more flexibility in configuring card
types and numbers, including broadband, narrowband, and other cards.
FTTB+DSL is the other FTTB mode. It deploys a fiber to the building and uses an ONU
that integrates a mini DSLAM function inside. User access employs the VDSL2/ADSL2+
technology. FTTB+DSL is especially suitable for reusing existing copper resources and
using users' telephone lines to access services. If neither a fiber nor a CAT-5 cable is
available to the home, FTTB+DSL can be deployed. The copper cable is generally 100 m
to 500 m long. The maximum length is 500 m. A single ONU in FTTB+DSL mode has a
larger capacity and covers more users than that in FTTB+LAN mode. The ONU is
normally deployed in a building. FTTB+DSL is mainly used in scenarios where only
twisted pairs are routed to the home. Its main application requirements are the same as
those of the FTTB+LAN. OLTs can be centrally deployed in the equipment building or
distributed in access points, with centralized deployment being the preferred mode. The
MDU comes in two types: pure-broadband and broadband + narrowband. Considering
user bandwidth, DSL MDU capacity, and distribution, it is recommended that no more
than eight LAN MDUs should be connected to each PON port. Like the LAN MDU, the
DSL MDU also has two forms: fixed-configuration and plug-in.
The ZXA10 C680/C600/C650 works as an OLT in FTTB scenarios. It connects to ONUs
to provide users with multiple services including IPTV, voice, and Internet.

5.3 FTTO Network Application
FTTO (Fiber to the office) is to connect equipment in the central office to the office by
using optical fibers. The equipment or network beyond the ONU/ONT is managed by the
user. In some countries, this optical mode sometimes is called Fiber to The Business
(FTTBusiness).
Because broadband users in commercial districts are generally centralized, it is
recommended to install OLTs in the access equipment rooms in multi-story buildings.
Level-1 of fiber splitter boxes are installed on each floor or every 2~3 adjacent floors.
Optical splitters (Usually 1:32 or 1:64) are installed in fiber splitter boxes to conduct “level-
1 optical splitting”. More than 32/64 homes on one floor can share one dedicated fiber
splitter box; no more than 32/64 homes on one floor can share one splitter box with homes
on other floors.
Trunk fibers are laid from the OLT to fiber splitter boxes through weak current cabinet.
The lowest capacity of fiber cores is determined by the total number of users in the
building and the coupling ratio of optical splitters. Optical splitter boxes are directly
connected to users through fibers, or for construction convenience, through level-2 optical
splitter boxes. At this time, level-2 fiber splitter boxes only act as splicing distribution
convergence points instead of optical division points.
Figure 5-3 shows the FTTO network topology using the xPON technology.

ZXA10 C680&C600&C650 Product Description
Figure 5-3 FTTO Network Topology
The main difference between FTTO and FTTH lies in the services they provide. FTTO
application does not necessarily cover streaming services such as IPTV but definitely
involves dedicated lines. Currently FTTO application features a heavy presence of TDM
dedicated line services.
FTTO is ideal for government and enterprise communications. Government
communications occur within or between government agencies including administration,
courts, police, taxation, transportation, and finance. Government communications provide
integrated service access involving voice, data, and video. The security of data service in
government communications is more important than that in enterprise and personal
communications. Traditional LAN access solutions are not a good fit for government
communications because they are complex in network architecture, poor in security, and
insufficient in integrated service access. In contrast, ZTE FTTx solution not only fully
meets government communications requirements, but also provides unique features
through the ZTE xPON system, including a super-long passive access range, VPN
isolation and LAN interconnection, dynamic bandwidth allocation, integrated service
access, a wide range of access terminals, and centralized management. The government
information network using the ZTE solution works in FTTO mode to provide differentiated
services for government agencies.
Enterprise customers, such as conference venues, upscale office buildings, and hotels,
bring in high added values. These users need a diverse range of services, demand a high
service quality, and are not sensitive to service tariffs. While developing enterprise group
users is crucial to increase ARPU for operators, a well-rounded enterprise information
solution is an important tool for them to gain such users.
The ZXA10 C680/C600/C650 works as an OLT in FTTO scenarios. The OLT supports
optical line protection and the terminals it connects to are SBU(Single business unit) and

MTU(Multiple dwelling unit ). In addition to services for government and enterprise users
such as voice, wired/wireless broadband, LAN interconnection, videoconferencing and
IPTV, the OLT can also provide services including enterprise PBX and TDM dedicated
line. For all these services, the OLT has a well-rounded QoS guarantee mechanism.
5.4 FTTC Network Application
FTTC(Fiber to the curb), as the complement of FTTB/FTTH, is generally applied in
residential areas and rural areas. In the FTTC application, fibers are connected to the
ONUs or DSLAMs on the streets, twisted pairs are connected to subscribers. The ONU
capacity is larger than that of FTTB+DSL. ONUs are placed in OCCs, regional equipment
rooms, or outdoor cabinets.
Figure 5-4 shows the FTTC network diagram using the xPON technology.
Figure 5-4 FTTC Network Diagram
FTTC is suitable for the developing information technology in rural areas, and prevents
the trunk copper cable from being stolen.
OLTs are placed in equipment rooms in the county or district. DSL MDUs are placed in
villages. By using passive splitters, multiple areas and villages can share the trunk fiber
and save network cost.

ZXA10 C680&C600&C650 Product Description
The ZXA10 C600/C680, working as the OLT in an FTTC network, is connected to ONUs
or DSLAMS on roadsides. ONUs and DSLAMs are connected to users through twisted
pairs, providing multiple services including voice, video, and the Internet service. In a
FTTC network, multi-access DSL MDUs are used to provide more voice ports than
broadband ports. It is recommended that the ratio of voice port to broadband port should
be 1:2 to 1:4.
5.5 FTTM Network Application
In the mobile 3G/LTE era, mobile base stations include traditional macro base stations
and micro base stations. LTE micro-stations, such as PICO/enterprise-level Femtocell,
home-level Femtocell, are deployed to enhance subscriber capacity and bandwidth and
implement extensive service coverage.
Operators use PTN/IP RAN to connect LTE macro base stations. The networks cover the
location of existing 2G/3G/4G macro base stations, and are extended to satisfy the high
density requirement of LTE. Small cell base stations require flexible carriers for cost and
construction consideration.
FTTM provides a low-cost and flexible-mobile-backhaul solution to operators by
combining traditional mobile backhaul to wired access networks using the FTTx networks.
FTTM is a complement for those stations not covered by PTN/IPRAN. Many operators
are considering the FTTM solution based on the PON technology to bear Smallcells.
5.5.1 FTTM Bearing Macro Cell Backhaul Solution
FTTM macro cell bearing includes E1/T1 bearing of 2G base stations and Ethernet base
station bearing of 3G/LTE base stations, see Figure 5-5.

⚫ Scenario 1: FTTM based on PON uses the CES technology to terminate E1/T1
service on the OLT, and uses the E1/STM-X interface to connect to the exiting
SDH/MSTP network. The CES mobile backhaul service is encapsulated with
PWE3 over MEF.
⚫ Scenario 2: For the backhaul service of 2G E1/T1, a gateway device
(Aggregation GW) is required on the peer end of the PSN to connect the BSC
through E1/T1 interfaces. The CES mobile backhaul service between the ONU
and the OLT is encapsulated with static PW/LSP. The CES mobile backhaul
service between the OLT and the Aggr GW is encapsulated with dynamic
PW/LSP. The OLT uses the TDM-relay function to convert static labels of TDM
services to dynamic labels.
⚫ Scenario 3: For the Ethernet backhaul service of 3G/LTE, FTTM provides the
xPON ONU or FE/GE P2P interfaces to connect the base stations. The OLT
is connected to the mobile core network through PSN, for example,
PTN/IPRAN. The FTTM network supports Ethernet transparent transmission
of backhaul service, and the backhaul service connection to PSN network in
MPLS L2VPN mode.

The typical application of Smallcells includes public areas, enterprises, and homes. The
Smallcells can be supported by indoor devices or outdoor devices. The flexible FTTx
network based on PON satisfies Smallcell bearing of different applications.
⚫ According to the requirements of different network coverage applications, Smallcell
base stations can choose proper PON SFU or MDU to access the network.
⚫ According to the network architecture, the wired OLT can be connected to the
convergence ring equipment of PTN/IPRAN or SR equipment of the bearing network.
The FTTM OLT provides L2 Ethernet and L2VPN connection to uplink equipment. In
another application, the OLT keeps current connection on the bearing network, and
is connected to the mobile core network through a transportation network. The
service model of mobile backhaul is the same as that of the PSTN, meaning that the
backhaul service is connected to BRAS/SR devices through L2.

5.6 Network Slice Application
In the broadband network construction, the coverage, complexity, investment, and period
of the access network take a great proportion. Due to the limitation of channel resources,
it is impossible for each operator to set up access channels to each user residence.
Meanwhile, governments are proposing national broadband and OpenAccess strategy to
drive the development of access networks.
To speed up FTTx network construction, save investment, and reduce risk, operators
demand for cooperation in constructing broadband networks, which requires the network
slice, especially the slicing of access networks.
In an access network, simultaneous multiple service access for different customers, such
as triple play, enterprise VPN, WiFi backhaul, and base station backhaul, requires the
network slice, meaning to implement independent management, maintenance of different
services and devices on a unified physical access network.
Figure 5-7 Network Slice Network Diagram
The OLT supports network slicing on a PON port or a PON or a PON card, refer to Figure
5-7. Each network slice has an independent uplink port, or a VLAN interface and vSwitch
on an uplink port.

key components. All cards and fan box are hot pluggable.
7.1.1 Distributed Design
The ZXA10 C680/C600/C650 uses distributed hardware architecture, distributing service
processing load to service cards to increase system switching capacity, performance, and
reliability. It implements distributed processing by using modularized design of functions.
Function modules include the switching and control module, service card module, and
uplink card module. Functions of modules are independent and controlled by different
processors. The fault of one processor does not affect the running of the entire system.
7.1.2 Redundancy Design
The ZXA10 C680/C600/C650 uses reliable design on key hardware components,
including active/standby protection, load sharing, hardware backup, which ensure
reliability of the hardware system.
⚫ Card active/standby protection
Key components use multi-processors redundancy technology. The switching and
control card (SFUL/SWUM/IMEP), power card (PRVR), and uplink card
(XFTO/XFTH) use the active/standby mechanism. In most cases, the active
components run, and the standby components keep synchronization with the
active one. If an active component is faulty, the standby component takes over the
role of the active one to ensure that the service is not interrupted.
⚫ Load sharing
The switching and control cards support load sharing. In normal conditions, both
switching and control cards are responsible for system control and service
processing. If one card is failed, the other card performs system control and
service processing independently. Only the switching capacity is affected, and the
service is not interrupted.
⚫ Physical backup
