Comparative and Superlative Adjectives – Study Guide & Practice

1. What are they?


• Comparative Adjectives: Used to compare two things or people. Formed by adding “-er” or
using “more”.

• Superlative Adjectives: Used to compare more than two things or people. Formed by
adding “-est” or using “most”.

2. General Rules
Adjective Type Comparative Superlative Example

Short (1 syllable) + -er + -est tall → taller → the


tallest

Ends in -e + -r / -st large → larger →


largest

CVC Pattern Double consonant + big → bigger →


-er/-est biggest

2+ syllables more + adj most + adj beautiful → more


beautiful → the most
beautiful

Irregular Changes completely good → better → the


best

4. Example Sentences
Comparatives:

• My house is bigger than yours.

Superlatives:

• That was the worst movie of the year.

5. Tips for your exam


• Use 'than' in comparatives: This car is faster than that one.

• Use 'the' with superlatives: She is the best singer.

• Don't confuse 'more' and 'most'!
