IELTS Task 2 Topic:

Some people believe that the role of a teacher is simply to transmit factual knowledge,
while others argue that teachers should also guide students in developing values and
beliefs.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Band 8 Sample Essay:

The role of a teacher has long been a subject of debate. While some argue that teachers should
focus solely on delivering factual knowledge, others believe that educators play a crucial part in
shaping students' values, ethics, and personal growth. This essay will explore both perspectives
before explaining why I believe a teacher’s role must go beyond information delivery.

On one hand, those who support a purely descriptive approach view the teacher as a transmitter
of objective knowledge. This model emphasizes clarity, neutrality, and academic rigor.
Particularly in subjects such as mathematics or science, where accuracy is critical, teachers are
expected to present facts without bias or personal interpretation. This method is efficient and
measurable, allowing teachers to focus on curriculum goals without overstepping into personal
or moral territory.

However, reducing teaching to information transfer risks turning educators into mere content
providers. Human development is not purely intellectual—it is also emotional, ethical, and
social. Teachers inevitably influence their students through their actions, language, and attitudes.
By embracing their normative role, teachers can cultivate empathy, critical thinking, and civic
responsibility. This is especially vital in today’s world, where misinformation and moral
ambiguity are widespread. Students need role models who do more than explain—they must also
inspire.

In my opinion, the most impactful teachers balance both functions. They present knowledge with
precision while also guiding students toward becoming thoughtful, ethical individuals. Teaching
is not just a job; it is a formative force. While shaping beliefs is delicate and should never
become indoctrination, avoiding it altogether leaves students directionless.

In conclusion, while factual instruction is essential, the greater mission of education must include
the development of character and values. A teacher who informs and inspires is far more valuable
than one who simply lectures.
