B. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
1. Executive Summary
An Approach to Sustainable Agriculture is a project that aims to provide farmers in the
Barangay Tickwas Farmers Association with an opportunity to generate extra income for their
livelihoods. We plan to achieve this by establishing a raw production, processing facility in the
community, pro- environmental and sustainable activities, and practices. Social work principles,
practices, practices and community planning are merged to produce a kindred intervention that
addresses the needs of the farmers and promotes highly creative concepts for resources,
ecological sustainability and development, strategic tactics applied for profit gaining, and sector
or community organizing. To achieve this objective, we plan to implement pro-environmental
and sustainable activities and practices, such as The Gulayan Project, animal shelter construction,
and alternative fertilizer for sustainable agriculture, providing farmers with a reliable source of
income. The main objective of The Gulayan Project is to promote organic vegetable farming
among barangay residents, to ensure the production of vegetables that are healthier than the usual
vegetables being sold in the market, and to increase awareness among the constituents and
residents through their involvement in producing their own crops and vegetables within their
respective gardens and/or available areas, (Sunstar, et.al, 2013).
While the importance of animal shelter construction plays a vital role in our communities
as they continuously work to reunite pets with their owners, shelter those in need, and find new
homes for animals that are lost without a permanent home or for those animals that, for our own
security, shouldn’t be roaming our streets. For animal shelter workers, it’s often a thankless job
as they balance having enough space to house all the animals, coordinating pet adoptions, and
developing their own campaigns to encourage people to be responsible and spay and neuter their
animals. Because the absence of an animal shelter or rescue group in a community can put a real
strain on municipal resources.
In addition, Animal shelter construction is very important in sustainable agriculture
because it provides a safe and healthy environment for livestock, which in turn leads to improved
animal health and productivity. By providing shelter, farmers can protect their animals from
extreme weather conditions, predators, and diseases. The shelter also serves as a place for
animals to rest, which can improve their overall well-being and reduce stress levels.
Additionally, the shelter can help prevent soil erosion and nutrient loss by reducing the
amount of animal waste that comes into contact with the soil. That’s how important animal
shelters have become; thousands of animals could be freely roaming city neighborhoods, and the
impact on public safety and health could be devastating. Luckily, many cities have animal
shelters or rescue groups that take on this burden for both the safety of animals and the public,
Codeway. (2022). Ask AI[Mobile application software] And the importance of Alternative
fertilizers for sustainable agriculture are organic or natural substances that are used to improve
soil fertility and crop production. Examples of alternative fertilizers include compost, animal
manure, green manure, and crop residues.
These fertilizers have several benefits over synthetic fertilizers, including: 1. Improved
soil health: Alternative fertilizers help to improve soil health by adding organic matter, which can
increase soil fertility, water-holding capacity, and nutrient availability. 2. Reduced environmental
impact: Alternative fertilizers are often made from renewable resources and do not contain
harmful chemicals that can pollute waterways and harm wildlife. 3. Lower cost: Alternative
fertilizers are often less expensive than synthetic fertilizers, which can reduce the cost of
production for farmers. 4. Improved crop quality: Alternative fertilizers can improve crop quality
by increasing nutrient content and reducing the risk of soil-borne diseases. So, the use of
alternative fertilizers can help farmers improve soil health and crop productivity while reducing
the environmental impact of their farming practices, Codeway. (2022). Ask AI[Mobile

The project is designed to promote sustainable agriculture practices and support the local
economy. It will also contribute to the conservation of local biodiversity and promote the use of
sustainable agricultural practices. This project also emphasizes the importance of social work
principles, practices, and community planning to produce a kindred intervention that addresses
the needs of the farmers and promotes highly creative concepts for resources, ecological
sustainability, and development. At the same time, it proposes to apply strategic tactics for profit
gaining and sector or community organizing to ensure the success of the project. In general, our
project aims to provide a sustainable source of income for farmers in the Barangay Tickwas
Farmers Association while promoting sustainable agriculture practices and environmental
conservation.
2. Project Background and Review of Related Literature
Farmers has very important significant on behalf of its layout optimization of crops
structure. In recent years the price of the variety of crops changing largely peasant economy had
an impact in this case we must be rational distribution of agricultural industry in structure, the
effective promotion of farmers income farming as a basis for agriculture, sustained and heathy
development of agriculture, farmers are more related to real economic growth (Jiaojiao Cao).
According to downward et.al,1997 majority of the world’s farmers are small-scale farmers in
developing countries and operating in diverse and high risk conditions.
A sustainable development is one that enhances quality of life, while improving
productivity, encourages conservation of natural resources while presenting economically
improved solutions, and must be maintained by the farmers’ community. Agricultural
development organizations must focus on and involved some of the poorest farmers in a
sustainable agricultural development, (Chambers, 1983). The belief that small-scale farming
could be sustainable in a viable option to improve livelihoods, (Octaviano, 2010). Impacts of
practices on profitability, production and income risk and other potential private benefits and cost
must be assessed in order to help farmers, (Norton and Mulen, 1994). There are projects,
activities to help farmers diversify their income.
More than one-third of the Philippines 50 million citizens depend on agriculture as the
primary or only source of income for their families. These families end up further in poverty as
agricultural productivity declines, unsustainable practices continue and economic growth lags
(Brooklynn Rich, 2023).
Farmers poverty has long been of global concern, mainly in poor rather than affluent
areas, (Shinjun Wang, 2022). Low education levels and poor farmers, physical health were most
prevalent in poor farmers, followed by income poverty and low living standards (Changchun,
2022). The macro changes in policies and global trade liberation in the agricultural sector
impacted farmers income through the price of a agricultural products and subsidies and
influenced the effect of cultivated land. For poor farmers, the effect of employment opportunity
in village was more significant than in urban. Aging also remain a challenge for farmers poverty
now and in the fulute (Wastfelt, 2022).
High inflation rate will kill the agriculture sector because of increasing in raw materials,
adding it will result in deadline in demand, as it will affect the purchasing power of consumers
due to soaring prices, (Cariaso, 2022). The rising cost of goods and services can make it difficult
for farmers to make a profit can led to food inflation, which can be determined to both farmers
because it increases (Meyer, 2022). Inflation can harm farmers because it increases the cost of
inputs such as seeds, fertilizer, and crop insurance (Banab, 2017). With these factors farmers wer
forced to shop farming and find and an alternative source of living to provide their family needs.
Organic agriculture is an ecologically intensive production system expanding worldwide
as demand for sustainability increases, (Eyhorn et.al, 2019; Willer et.al, 2019). Although organic
farms produce lower yields than comparable conventional farms (Seufert et.al, 2012; Ponisio
et.al, 2015), they are more profitable, more friendly to pollinators, and the environment,
(Kennedy et.al, 2013; Tuck et.al, 2014; Reganold and Wachter, 2016; Kova’cs- Hostyanszki et.al,
2017).
Organic production involves multuiple techniques and it is interpreted in different ways
by the ages involved, (Van der Ploeg et.al, 2000). Producing organic food is one of the
innovative strategies used by farmers to overcome vulnerability and rural crisis (Moyano, 2000,
Collantes, 2018). Organic farming bemnefits the health of the environment and those who farm
that land, it is critical that organic farming is profitable enough for farmers to stay business,
(Luengo, 2020). Evidence that organic farming is more profitable that conventional is mounting
from studies around the world, (Alejandro, 2022).
An animal shelter is the physical nucleus of a community animal care, it must be a place
of security and comfort for the animals sheltered there, (Escondido, 2021). Good housing is an
integral part of human and animal welfare, (Martilla, 2018). Housing for animals is essential for
obtaining benefits from livestock and birds in respect of their productivity and services to
mankind, (Kersten, 2015). A clean shelter also adds the benefits of increasing the comfort level
of the animal and presenting positive impacts health of the animal. Proper hygienic condition
helps to avoid bacterial, and parasitic infection and related illness in animals, (Levy et.al, 2014).
In past, animal waste that satisfy crop nitrogen recommendations which has provided
operators in areas of intensive livestock and poultry production with a means to animal waste in
a beneficial manner, (Reddy et.al, 2008; Eghball and Paver, 1999). Marketing poultry litter
outside of impacted watersheds to nutrient-defficient areas offers one solution to litter surplus
problem associated with intensive animal production. Animal manure can increase farmer’s
profitability by providing a lower cost alternative supply of soil nutrients and usually enhances
biophysical characteristics (McGrath et.al, 2010). According top many previous agronomic
studies, animal manure was found to be equally effective as commercial fertilizer for the grow
crops and forage production (Kwaw-Mensah and Al-Kaisi, 2006; McAndrews et.al, 2006; Loria
et.al, 2007; Paschold et.al, 2008; Chantigny et.al, 2008). Moreover, some studies on raw crops
and forages found that animal manure can be and agronomically viable substitute for in organic
fertilizers (Adeli and Varco, 2001; Brink et.al, 2003; and Adeli et.al, 2005).
3. Goals and Objectives
4. Proposed key interventions and activities.
5. Assumptions and Risk
The issue of the cooperation of all the members and willingness to act is the greatest risk
and weakness of this project. This factor will definitely affect the success in implementing this
project in collaboration between the farmers organization and their stakeholders. This can lead to
the failure of the project as it cannot provide the expected result and benefits towards the
farmers. However, the project stands with the assumption that offering these initiatives will be a
great help for all the stakeholders especially to the members of the organization, who have faced
challenges about insufficient income, improper setting of animals and inflation of fertilizer.
Climate change is also a great risk because it can cause damage to the planted vegetables, or it
can also result to a great loss.
6. Evaluation and Monitoring
Evaluation and monitoring as stated above will be complete in sequence and will be put
together as part of the overall project. The conduct of the evaluation and monitoring can lead the
project into something progressive and more beneficial. The action will be done by the social
work interns, selected barangay officials, and adviser of the organization.
In the end of the project, the monitoring team will also be responsible in the evaluation of
the general effect of the conducted project. All collaborative agencies will be favored to comply
the record of documentations and evaluation. Hence, reports will be tackled to the members of
the group for further actions to take.
