Nursing Core Values as Applied to Nutrition and Dietetics

The Integration of Nursing Core Values in Nutrition and Diet Therapy

• The nursing core values are of great importance and relevance in the nursing field. As nurses, aside from having
innate care and compassion to serve others, we also need to remember and embody certain core values that are
vital in the development of a professional nurse. It serves as a standard and as a guideline for nurses and future
nurses to abide to when providing care.
• The nursing core values within the context of the Filipino society are:
1. love of God, caring as the core of nursing (compassion competence, confidence, conscience,
commitment),
2. love of people (respect for the dignity of each person regardless of creed, color, gender, and
political affiliation),
3. love of country, and
4. patriotism (civic duty, social responsibility, and good governance, preservation and enrichment
of the environment and culture heritage)
• Moreover, these core values are also relevant in the application of nutrition and diet therapy in
nursing. As aforementioned in the previous lessons, nurses play a vital role in helping clients with their
nutrition during the time and period of care and the core values are used.
• As an example, the value of caring, compassion, and competence comes in when we serve as a coordinator,
interpreter, and teacher to the client, helping them navigate their way and be comfortable with necessary
modifications in their diet.
• As nurses, we are innately committed to serve and help people with their needs to the extent of our skills and
abilities, in terms of aiding in nutrition and diet therapies, we are to provide quality care, health education, and
assistance to them whilst respecting their dignity and preferences regardless of the color, gender, and religion.
• Furthermore, as the ones being hands-on and thoroughly involved with the patient’s care, we often collaborate
with other healthcare professionals in the process of health promotion, disease prevention, and restoration of
health of the client.
• The core values, such as commitment in providing quality care, is still applied.
• The roles of the nurse in providing care and aid to clients during the time of nutrition and diet therapy
are effectively executed when such core values are remembered and followed. These core values may
seem like an ordinary statement that are just to be memorized but when taken to heart and applied,
these values are the ones to develop us into competent professional nurses.
