PHY3105: Modern Physics

Problem Set 4

1. What is (a) the longest and (b) the shortest wavelengths of the Balmer series.
(Ans: (a) 656nm (b) 365nm)

2. Find the quantum number that characterizes the earth’s orbit around the sun. The
earth’s mass is 6.0 × 1024 kg, its orbital radius is 1.5 × 1011 m, and its orbital
speed is 3.0 × 104 m/s. (Ans: 2.6 × 1074)

3. A proton and an electron, both at rest initially, combine to form a hydrogen atom
in the ground state. A single photon is emitted in this process. What is its
wavelength? (Ans: 91.2nm)

4. A certain ruby laser emits 1.00 J pulses of light whose wavelength is 694 nm.
What is the minimum number of Cr3+ ions in the ruby? (Ans: 3.49 × 1018)

5. A hydrogen atom is in its first excited state (n = 2). Using the Bohr Theory of the
atom, calculate (a) the radius of the orbit, (b) the linear momentum of the
electron. (Ans: (a) 0.212nm (b) 9.96 × 10-25 kg⋅ms-1)

6. Find the wavelength of the spectral line that corresponds to a transition in

hydrogen from the n = 10 to the ground state. In what part of the spectrum is this?
(92nm, ultraviolet)

7. What is the wavelength of light for the least energetic photon emitted in the
Lyman series of the hydrogen atom spectrum lines? What is the wavelength of the
series limit for the Lyman series? (Ans: 122nm; 91.1nm)

8. A hydrogen atom, initially at rest in the n = 4 quantum state, undergoes a

transition to the ground state, emitting a photon in the process. What is the speed
of the recoiling hydrogen atom? (Ans: 4.1 m/s)
