LESSON PLAN CAMBRIDGE MATHS YEAR 3

Teacher Name: Monoliza Philips

Class: 3 Joy
Subject: Mathematics
Date: 3 April 2025
Time: 25 Minutes
Topic: Unit 11 More Multiplication & Division
Learning Students will strengthen their understanding of multiplication and division through
Objectives: real-life examples and hands-on activities.
Success 1. Learners can correctly solve multiplication and division problems using real-
Criteria: life examples.
2. Learners can explain multiplication as repeated addition and division as equal
sharing in their own words.
Lesson By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to:
Objectives/ 1. Solve simple multiplication and division problems using real-life examples.
Outcomes: 2. Break down multiplication into smaller, manageable steps.
3. Divide numbers and interpret remainders in division problems.
Readiness and
Teaching a) Gaining Attention
(8 minutes) Start with a quick mental math challenge:
 If I have 3 baskets, and each has 2 apples, how many apples do I have in total?
 If I have 12 candies and share them equally among 4 friends, how many does
each get?
Encourage students to call out their answers enthusiastically.
Praise correct answers and guide students who need help.

b) Informing Learners of the Objective

Teacher explains the lesson objective:
 Today, we are going to explore multiplication and division using fun real-life
examples.

c) Stimulating Recall of Prior Knowledge

Teacher asks:
 Who remembers what multiplication means?
 Who can tell me what division is used for?
Gives a recap:
Briefly revisit multiplication as repeated addition and division as sharing equally.

d) Materials/Resources
Whiteboard, markers, flashcards with multiplication/division problems.
Engagement
(9 minutes) a) Presenting the Stimulus
The Cookie Bakery
The teacher introduces a real-world problem:

Multiplication Problem:
 I baked 5 trays of cookies. Each tray has 11 cookies. How many cookies do I
have in total?
The teacher writes on the board: 11 × 5 = ?
Guides students through step-by-step problem-solving.

Division Problem:
 Now, if I want to share 55 cookies equally among 3 friends, how many does
each get?
The teacher writes on the board: 55 ÷ 3 = ?
Guides students to solve the problem step-by-step.
b) Providing Learning Guidance
The teacher demonstrates how to simplify multiplication into smaller steps by
breaking numbers down:
 Example: Splitting 11 into 10 + 1, then multiplying each part by 5.
For division, the teacher explains how to fairly distribute 55 cookies among 3
friends.
Introduces the concept of remainders when division does not result in a whole
number.

c) Materials/Resources
 Visual aids (pictures)
 Whiteboard & markers
Mastery
(8 minutes) a) Eliciting Performance
Teacher gives practice problems:
 Now it’s your turn! Solve these multiplication and division problems.
 Students are divided into 9 groups, with each group consisting of 3 members.
 Each group receives an ice cream stick with a question attached.
 Students collaborate in their groups to solve the problem.

b) Providing Feedback
Teacher reviews the answers with students:
 Each group shares their solution and explains their reasoning.
 Teacher provides positive reinforcement and gently corrects misconceptions.

c) Materials/Resources
 Ice cream sticks with attached questions
 Whiteboard and markers
 Small reward
