Worksheet 1

The document presents two questions related to fluid mechanics using the Navier-Stokes equations. The first question involves determining the velocity distribution in a two-dimensional flow between a fixed and moving vertical plate. The second question focuses on finding the velocity profile and total volumetric flow rate in a tube formed by concentric cylinders under a pressure difference.

TOPIC: FLUID MECHANICS (NAVIER - STOKES EQUATIONS)

QUESTION 1

A two-dimensional flow is generated between a fixed and moving vertical plate. The left plate is fixed,
and the right plate moves with a velocity U. The distance between the plates is 𝛿. The flow is steady and
fully developed; that is, there is no change in the x-direction. The fluid is incompressible and the pressure
is constant. Use the Navier – Stokes equations to find the velocity distribution between the plates.

QUESTION 2

Consider a die that forms a tube of polymer. In the die of length D, a pressure difference of P1 – P2
causes a liquid of viscosity 𝜇 to flow steadily from left to right in the annular area between two fixed
concentric cylinders. The inner cylinder is a solid, whereas the outer one is hollow; their radii are r1 and
r2 respectively. Find the velocity profile in the annular space and the total volumetric flow rate Q.
