Singular and Plural in French

Key Information
Nouns are words that name things, people, places and ideas.
Making a noun plural in French is quite straightforward.
For most nouns, simply add -s to the end of the word.

Remember to make the determiners plural too:

le/la/l’ (the) les (the)

un/une (a/an) des (some)

Make these nouns plural by adding -s and changing the determiners.

Irregular Plurals
Not all nouns follow the same pattern.
change to -aux in the plural
Nouns ending in -al

Nouns that end in -s, -x or -z don’t change in the plural

Nouns ending in -eu, -eau


add an -x in the plural
7 nouns ending in -ou (un bijou [jewel],
un caillou [stone], un chou [cabbage],
un genou [knee], un hibou [owl], add an -x in the plural
un joujou [toy], un pou [head louse])

Make these nouns plural by adding the correct ending and changing the determiners.
