EQAO Writing: Topic Development Rubric and Scoring Guide
Prompt: You have been given a choice to work on a class assignment in a group
or on your own. Write a text explaining which way you would prefer to work
and why.
Code 10
You have been given a choice to work on a class assignment in a group or
on your own. Write a text explaining which way you would prefer to work
and why.
I would like to work in a group. because the group can share each
others ideas to make the work speed up. and because if you work
together every one is good at something so one person in the
group could know one thing and the other person can know that
thing so it speeds up the work.
Annotation: The response is not developed; the ideas and information are limited and
unclear (e.g., …the group can share each others ideas…every one is good at
something...speeds up the work.). Organization is random with few links between ideas
(e.g., ...because...because if...so...and..).
The response has a limited relationship to the assigned task.
Code 20
You have been given a choice to work on a class assignment in a group or
on your own. Write a text explaining which way you would prefer to work
and why.
If I were given the choice to work on a class project in a group or on my own, I
would choose to work on my own and here's why. If I were in a group I might get
distracted and I wouldn't get anything done on time. Also, if I were in a group
and say someone disagreed with something someone else said, than, they'd be
arguing about it and it would take even longer to get stuff done because we'd all
be distracted. Finally, I would choose to work on my own rather than in a group
because I can do everything my way, and if I were put in a group, I might not
get along well with the people i'm with or I might not work well with them. That is
why if I were given the choice to work in a group or on my own, I would choose
to work on my own.
Annotation: The response is minimally developed with few ideas (e.g., …on my own…might
get distracted…someone disagreed with something someone else said…can do everything
my way...) and little information (e.g., …wouldn't get anything done on time…arguing…it
would take even longer to get stuff done…might not get along well with the people i'm
with...). Organization is minimal with weak links between ideas (e.g., …I would choose…If
I…Also...and say...or...That is why…).
The response is partly related to the assigned task.
Code 30
You have been given a choice to work on a class assignment in a group or
on your own. Write a text explaining which way you would prefer to work
and why.
I would rather work on a class assignment in a group. This is because, when you
work in a group the assignment is easier to begin since there are more people,
more ideas and more thoughts. The assignment can be more detailed and it
could be done quicker. Another reason is that you can make friends with your
group members. Group projects can force kids to be more social and talk to
people they usually don't speak with. Working on class assignments in groups is
a
great way to learn more about different people other than your friends. My final
reason is that it could be way more fun than doing it by yourself. If you're doing
the assignment on
your own you wont have anybody to speak with while doing it and it could
be boring. This is why I would rather work on a class assignment in a group.
Annotation: The response has a clear focus and is adequately developed with ideas
(e.g., …the assignment is easier to begin……more detailed…done quicker...make friends
with your group members...way more fun) and supporting details (e.g., …there are more
people, more ideas and more thoughts...learn more about different people other than
your friends...on your own you wont have anybody to speak with...). Organization is
mechanical with adequate links between ideas (e.g., I would…This is because…Another
reason...If you're...and it could...This is why…).
The response is clearly related to the assigned task.
Code 40
You have been given a choice to work on a class assignment in a group or
on your own. Write a text explaining which way you would prefer to work
and why.
I would prefer to work in a group because of many valid reasons. First, when
working in a group you all have different points of view. and if you share them
and put
them together you'll make points you never thought of, and create an incredible
assignment full of brilliant ideas. Secondly, in a real job, you're going to have to
work with people all the time so practicing in school is excellent preparation for
real jobs. Being able to work together in a job makes you much more likely to be
employed than someone else who can't work with other people. Next, to have
the life skills of cooperation gives you an advantage over everyone else. It
makes you a better student, colleague and all around better person. Finally,
working together in a group means you learn more, if your'e always trying only
your strategy or only writing the
way your'e used to. you'll learn much less than if you explore other people's idea's
rather than just yours. In conclusion, I would much rather prefer to work
together than independantly.
Annotation: The response has a clear focus and is well-developed with sufficient
specific and relevant ideas (e.g., …when working in a group you all have different points
of view…in a real job, your’e going to have to work with people all the time…to have the
life skill of cooperation gives you an advantage over everyone else…working together in
a group means you learn more…) and supporting details (e.g., …if you share them and put
them together you’ll make points you never thought of, and create an incredible
assignment full of brilliant ideas…practicing in school is excellent preparation for real
jobs...makes you much more likely to be employed than someone else who can’t work
with other people…It makes you a better student, colleague and all around better
person…if your’e always trying only your strategy or only writing the way your’e used to
you’ll learn much less than if you explore other people’s idea’s rather than just yours.).
Organization is logical and coherent with effective links between ideas (e.g.,
...First…Secondly…Being able…much more...Next…It makes…Finally…In conclusion…).
The response has a thorough relationship to the assigned task
