TITRATIONS
A. Calculations involving Redox Titrations of acidic MnO4- with Fe2+.
1. A standard solution of 7.65 g dm-3 potassium tetraoxomanganate (VII) was titrated
against of iron (II) tetraoxosulphate (VI) solution. If 15.50 cm3 of this solution required
for complete reaction, 25.00 cm3.
(a) Write down the:
(i) reduction half equation; (ii) oxidation half equation; (iii) overall redox
equation.
(b) Calculate the concentration of:
(i) potassium tetraoxomanganate (VII) in mol dm-3;
(ii) iron (II) tetraoxosulphate (VI) solution in:
I. mol dm-3; II. g dm-3.
[Fe = 56; Mn = 55; S = 32; K = 39; O =16]

Solution
a) (i) Reduction half equation:
MnO4– + 8H+ + 5e- → Mn2+ + 4H2O
(ii) Oxidation half equation:
Fe2+ → Fe3+ + e-
(iii) Overall redox reaction:
Eq. (i) x 1: MnO4– + 8H+ + 5e- → Mn2+ + 4H2O
(ii) x 5: + 5Fe2+ → 5Fe3+ + 5e-

(a) Concentration of KMnO4 in A in g dm-3
Molar mass of KMnO4 = 39.0 + 55.0 + (16.0 x 4) = 158 g mol-1
Conc. in g dm-3 = conc. (mol dm-3) x molar mass (g mol-1)
= 0.0200 x 158 = 3.16 g dm-3

(b) Concentration of FeSO4 in B in mol dm-3

(d) Mass of water in FeSO4.xH2O.


= mass of hydrated salt – mass of anhydrous salt
= 27.8 – 14.9 = 12.9 g
