Activity 3: Reading Text
Directions: Read the reading text carefully. Note important details
and answer the questions that follows.
Understanding Plate Boundaries
The Earth's surface is constantly changing due to dynamic forces within the
planet. A key concept in this process is the idea of plate boundaries, which are
regions where two tectonic plates meet. Tectonic plates are large slabs of the
Earth's lithosphere that move slowly over the semi-fluid asthenosphere beneath
them.
Plate boundaries are zones of significant geological activity, such as
earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and mountain formation. These regions are
characterized by significant stress and deformation as the plates interact by
moving away from each other, sliding past one another, or colliding. This
interaction creates various geological features and phenomena.
Seismic activity, such as earthquakes, is common along plate boundaries due to
the plates grinding against each other and releasing energy. Volcanic activity is
also prevalent in these regions because of magma movement from the mantle
to the surface.
Understanding plate boundaries is crucial for scientists to predict geological
events and understand the processes that shape the Earth's landscape.
Questions:
1. What is a plate boundary?
2. Describe the main characteristics of plate boundaries.
3. Why are plate boundaries zones of significant stress and
deformation?
4. What geological activities are commonly associated with plate
boundaries?
5. Why is it important for scientists to study plate boundaries?
