A PROPOSED TINY HOUSE IN TARLAC
Design Concept

The proposed design of the tiny house in rural Tarlac embraces a modern, sustainable approach that
maximizes natural ventilation and light. The open-plan layout enhances airflow and illuminates the
interior, creating a comfortable and energy-efficient living space. Elevated on concrete stilts to protect
against flooding and optimize air circulation, the structure is designed with materials chosen for their
durability, low maintenance, and ability to withstand Tarlac's hot and rainy climate.

The facade blends natural and modern materials to create a welcoming, functional aesthetic. Lumber
cladding adds warmth, while fiber cement boards provide a sleek, contemporary look. Large windows
with reflective/low-e glass maximize natural light and ventilation, while the metal railings and elevated
form contribute to a minimalist, modern appearance. The design prioritizes shading, airflow, and energy
efficiency, making it well-suited to the local climate.

Tropical Design Principles

Passive Cooling

-The open-plan layout ensures natural airflow and cross-ventilation. The ceiling height of 2.4 meters
allows hot air to rise and escape, keeping the space cooler.

-Overhangs and louvered canopies provide shading to minimize solar heat gain and keep the interior
comfortable.

-Rain screen system behind the fiber cement boards allows for air circulation, preventing moisture
buildup.

Maximized Natural Light

-Aluminum frames with reflective/low-e glass in windows and doors allow ample daylight to fill the
space while reflecting heat to minimize internal temperature rise.

-The design ensures that natural light is optimally utilized, reducing the need for artificial lighting during
the day.

Durability and Low Maintenance:

-The materials are selected for their resilience to the local climate, ensuring longevity with minimal
upkeep. The combination of fiber cement boards, lumber cladding, and metal roofing offers a balance of
function and aesthetics, with an emphasis on materials that are easy to maintain.

Materials Used

Fiber Cement Board

-Used for walls due to its durability, resistance to the elements, and minimal maintenance needs. It is
well-suited for the hot and rainy climate of Tarlac.
R.C. Column / Steel Column

Provides structural stability and support for the elevated design, ensuring durability and strength.

Lumber Cladding with Rain Screen System:

-Lumber is a locally available material, providing natural warmth and texture. The rain screen system
behind the cladding ensures ventilation and moisture control, extending the lifespan of the material.

Corrugated Metal Roofing (Overhang)

-Offers durability, weather resistance, and heat resistance. The corrugated metal roofing also helps
manage rainwater runoff and provides shelter from the sun.

Metal Railings

-Used for safety and modern aesthetics, metal railings are durable and complement the industrial style
of the house.

Metal Stairs

- Metal stairs are durable, low-maintenance, and space-efficient. They offer a modern look, are weather-
resistant, and can be customized for safety with non-slip coatings. Ideal for a minimalist tiny house
design.

Aluminum Frames & Reflective/Low-e Glass

-The aluminum frames provide structural integrity, while the reflective/low-e glass controls solar heat
gain while allowing for natural light.

Solid Wood or Aluminum and Glass

-Used for doors or selected framing, offering a combination of natural material warmth and modern
design.

Fiber Cement Canopy

-Provides shade and protection from rain, using the same material as the walls for design cohesion.

Concrete Stilt

Elevates the house, provides protection from flooding, and ensures proper ventilation underneath the
house.

Finishes

Wall and Canopy

-The fiber cement boards will be finished with paint and a sealant to protect against weathering,
moisture, and UV damage. The paint will be reflective to help minimize heat absorption.

Roof
-The corrugated metal roofing will be galvanized or pre-painted to ensure longevity and resist corrosion,
especially in the tropical climate.

Stilt

-The concrete stilts will have either a polished or exposed aggregate finish, providing durability and a
modern aesthetic that contrasts nicely with the natural elements of the house.

Stairs

- An anti-slip finish is a coating that improves traction on stairs, preventing slips. It can be applied as
textured coatings, grit strips, or non-slip paint for added safety.
