DEPARTMENT OF ANIMATION AND VIRTUAL REALITY

B.Sc. GAMING

Academic Year: 2024-2025

Odd Semester

Subject: PREPRODUCTION FOR GAMES

Subject Code: 24BSG1C03

Semester: I
Date: 24/1/24
Q. No Marks
1 MARKS ALLOCATION SCHEME 20
PART - A
1 Answer any FOUR of the following questions. 5X4=20

a Explain the term "AAA games" and describe their significance in the video game
industry.
Ans. "AAA games" refer to high-budget, high-profile video games developed by major
studios with substantial financial and technical resources. These games feature cutting-
edge graphics, complex gameplay mechanics, and extensive marketing campaigns.
Examples include The Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Call of Duty. Their
significance lies in driving industry standards, pushing technological innovation, and
generating massive revenue, often shaping the future of gaming trends.
b Define archetypes and explain their significance in game character development.
Ans.
Archetypes are universally recognized character models that embody specific traits,
such as the hero, mentor, or villain. They help create relatable and memorable
characters in games. For instance, in The Legend of Zelda, Link represents the hero
archetype, while Ganon embodies the villain archetype. Using archetypes in character
design ensures deeper player engagement and supports storytelling by providing
recognizable roles in the game’s narrative.
c Illustrate the role of artificial intelligence in enhancing game mechanics.
Ans.
Artificial intelligence (AI) plays a crucial role in modern games by improving NPC (non-
playable character) behavior, enemy reactions, and dynamic world interactions. AI
enables adaptive gameplay, such as enemies learning player strategies in Alien:
Isolation or procedurally generated content in No Man’s Sky. AI enhances immersion by
making game worlds feel more realistic and responsive to player actions.
d Explain the process of rendering drawings in storyboarding using digital
software.
Ans.
Rendering drawings in storyboarding involves creating visual sequences to outline
game scenes, camera angles, and character movements. Digital software like Adobe
Photoshop, Toon Boom, or Storyboard Pro helps artists sketch, color, and animate
storyboards efficiently. Layers, brushes, and effects improve visualization, ensuring that
developers have a clear representation of the game’s flow before full production begins.
e Describe how level layout and focal points are integrated into the GDD (Game
Design Document).
Ans.
Level layout defines the structure of a game environment, ensuring smooth navigation
and player engagement. Focal points guide player attention to key objectives, such as
enemies, collectibles, or exit points. In the GDD, level design includes sketches, 3D
maps, and descriptions of interactive elements, ensuring consistency in game
mechanics and storytelling. Properly designed layouts enhance gameplay balance and
user experience.

PART - B
2
Answer any TWO of the following questions. 2X9=18

Examine the history and evolution of games, focusing on the development of

a video games from their early beginnings to modern-day advancements.
Ans.
The history of video games dates back to the 1950s with simple simulations like
Tennis for Two, followed by arcade classics like Pong in the 1970s. The 1980s saw the
rise of home consoles like the NES, while the 1990s introduced 3D gaming with titles
like Super Mario 64. The 2000s brought online multiplayer and open-world games,
leading to today’s advanced AI-driven, VR, and cloud-based gaming experiences. The
evolution of technology has enabled more immersive and interactive gameplay,
shaping the industry’s growth.
b Evaluate the cognitive and psychological effects of video games, providing examples of
both positive and negative impacts.
Ans.
Video games can have both positive and negative cognitive and psychological effects.
Positively, they enhance problem-solving skills, hand-eye coordination, and strategic
thinking, as seen in games like Portal and StarCraft. However, excessive gaming can
lead to addiction, social isolation, and aggressive behavior, particularly in violent games
like Grand Theft Auto. Balancing gameplay and real-life responsibilities is essential for
healthy gaming habits.

c Evaluate the effectiveness of using a thumbnail storyboard in the early stages of project
development. How does it support the final storyboard creation?
Ans. A thumbnail storyboard consists of rough sketches outlining key scenes and interactions
in a game. It serves as a blueprint for the final storyboard, ensuring a coherent visual flow
before detailed illustrations are created. This process helps developers refine camera angles,
pacing, and scene transitions efficiently. By visualizing the game’s progression early,
designers can make necessary adjustments before committing to high-detail production,
saving time and resources.

3 Answer the following question.

Evaluate the significance of character conflict and its effect on the development of
a the game plot.
Ans.
Character conflict is a driving force in storytelling, shaping a game’s narrative and
player engagement. Conflicts can be internal (psychological struggles) or external
(battles against enemies or environments). In The Last of Us, Joel’s internal struggle
with loss and survival creates emotional depth, while external conflicts with infected
creatures drive the gameplay. Strong character conflicts make plots compelling,
motivating players to progress and experience character growth throughout the game.
