Unit Convertion

The document outlines the objectives for students to recognize and convert units, emphasizing the distinction between quantities and units. It provides examples of identifying units in context, explains base units and prefixes, and details unit conversion methods, particularly within the metric system. Additionally, it includes practice questions and real-life applications of unit conversions.

Units and Unit Conversion

Objectives - Students will be able to:

1. Recognize a unit in a written paragraph
2. List three units from the metric system
3. Convert units from one type to another
Quantities vs. Units
There are quantities and there are units.

Quantity – an amount of something; a number

Quantities tell you how much you have (very important)

Unit - how things are measured

Units tell you what you have (more important)
With only a couple exceptions, every numerical answer
needs to have a unit or else the answer is incomplete
Identifying Units
Check for understanding – Talk to your table partner and
make a list of five units that you frequently come across. In
a minute, I’ll call on some of you to give examples.
Identifying Units
Example – In your notes, identify all the units in the
following paragraph:

Tommy bought three Play Stations for $20 each off of

Craigslist. He had to walk 14 miles to pick them up. He
plans on playing them for the next two weeks without
stopping. After two weeks, school starts again and he will
have to wait nine months before he can play again.
Quantities vs. Units
In the following questions, identify the correct answer based
on the units alone:
1) How tall is Sally? 2) How fast is Sally going?
a) 5.6 a) 24 mi/hr
b) 4.2 mi/hr b) 95
c) 62 inches c) 2 hours
d) 23 seconds d) 18 inches
3) How long does it take Sally to get to the airport from CDO?
a) 21 miles
b) 35 minutes
c) 24 mi/hr
d) .5
Units
Units can tell you what you’re working with. In the previous
slide, each answer was obvious because of the unit.
Standard (U.S.) Metric
Time second, minute, hour, year second (s)
Distance inch, feet, yard, mile meter (m)
Mass pounds, ounces kilogram (kg)

Second, meter, and kilogram are known as base units

Base Units
Base units are fundamental units used to create all other units.
What is the unit for speed? mi/hr (m/s in metric system)
Notice that there are actually two units that have been
combined to make the unit for speed.
Prefixes:
kilo = 1000 of something 1 kilometer = 1000 meters
centi = .01 of something 1 centimeter = .01 meters
milli = .001 of something 1 millimeter = .001 meters
Unit Conversion
Unit conversion is changing your unit but not changing what
was measured.
Example – Which is a longer period of time, 60 seconds or
one minute?
Notice that the quantity changed because the unit changed,
but they are still equal to each other.
Unit Conversion
Convert the following:
How many meters are there in 2 kilometers?
1 km = 1000 m
2 km = 2000 m
How many centimeters are there in 1 m?
1 cm = .01 m
100 cm = 1 m
How many millimeters are there in 1 m?
1 mm = .001 m
1000 mm = 1 m
Unit Conversion
With metric units, the conversion is usually just moving
the decimal to the right (bigger) or the left (smaller)
How many centimeters are there in 1 m?
1 cm = .01 m The decimal moved to
100 cm = 1 m the right two places

How many millimeters are there in 1 m?

1 mm = .001 m The decimal moved to
1000 mm = 1 m the right three places
Unit Conversion
Convert the following:
45 cm is how many m?
1 cm = .01 m The decimal moved to
45 cm = .45 m the left two places

72 mm is how many m?
1 mm = .001 m The decimal moved to
72 mm = .072 m the right three places
350 grams is how many kg?
1 g = .001 kg The decimal moved to
350 g = .35 kg the right three places
Unit Conversion
How would you convert 25 km/hr to m/s?
Instead of converting one base unit, you need to do two
unit conversions.
25 km = 25000 m
1 hr = 3600 s
25 km/hr = (25000 m)/(3600 s) = 6.94 m/s
Unit Conversion
What does “/” mean in math class?
When we say “miles per hour”, we’re talking about
division. You can look at units the same way you look at
numbers and you can do math with them just like numbers.

These are known as conversion factors. The numerator

and denominator are equal to each other.
Unit Conversion
A life insurance plan advertises their cost to be 9¢ per day.
How much does this plan cost in dollars per year?

¢

The plan costs $32.85/year.

Unit Conversion
You are working as a nurse and the doctor says a patient
needs to receive 4800 mg of a medicine in a 24 hour time
period. If the medicine is to be administered at a constant
rate for the entire 24 hours, how many grams per seconds
does the patient need to receive?
To finish up…
1. Write down all the units you see in the following
sentences:
Bob and Sally drove their eight children through 12 cities on
a road trip. Their average speed was 95 miles/hour and their
average gas mileage was 87 miles/gallon. They spent $50
on gas and were gone a total of five days.
2. List three units from the metric system
3. If there are 5280 feet in one mile, how many feet are
there in 2.5 miles?
