Lesson
Identifying and Assessing Personal
1 Entrepreneurial Competencies (PECs)

There is a quote that says “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage
to pursue them” – Walt Disney. Mark Zuckerberg started his site when he was 19 and
according to him, he does not know much about business then. Now, he is famous for
being the cofounder and Chief Executive Officer of Facebook, the world's largest social
network Web site.
Do you have what it takes to become an entrepreneur? Having a great concept is
not enough. An entrepreneur must be able to develop and manage the company that
implements his or her idea.
Being an entrepreneur requires special drive, perseverance, passion, and a spirit
of adventure, in addition to managerial and technical ability.
In this lesson, the traits and characteristics of a successful entrepreneur are
discussed. Try to examine your personality and ask yourself if you are ready to enter
entrepreneurship. According to David Karp, founder and CEO of Tumblr,
"Entrepreneur is someone who has a vision for something and a want to create".

What’s In

Now let us try if you knew the following persons:

1. Henry Sy

? 2. Lucio Tan
3. Tony Tan Caktiong
4. Mariano Que
5. Socorro C. Ramos
Is there something common to those individuals? You are right they are some of the
successful Filipino entrepreneurs in our country. These top Filipino entrepreneurs
possess different characteristics which are essential to becoming successful. Who
knows, you can be one of them.

that big for now as a neophyte. Did you know that most technology giants today started
out small?

3

risks and enjoying most of the rewards. ... one who prove to be successful in taking on
the

the employee/s are individual who work for the employer.
Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies (PECs) Defined
Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies (PECs) refers to the key characteristics
that should be possessed by successful entrepreneurs to perform entrepreneurial
functions effectively.
Competencies are defined as the combination of knowledge, abilities, and attitudes
needed to accomplish a role efficiently. In adopting this definition, we are relating the
entrepreneurial competencies to the concept of efficacy, or performance in the
opportunity identification process.
Some of these competencies are innate while others are acquired in the process
of learning and training and development

Activity 1. Are you a Potential Entrepreneur?

Rate yourself according to the given circumstances. At the extremes, “1” means
strongly disagree while “10” means strongly agree. Put a (√) check on the column.

entrepreneur. The purpose of this activity is to help you explore your interest in and
abilities for entrepreneurship.

What is It

While entrepreneurs have in common certain characteristics and skills, there is a wide
range of individuality among them. Here are the ten (10) most essential Personal
Entrepreneurship competencies (PECs) that are:
1. Hardworking – According to YOURDICTIONARY, someone that is diligent in laboring
and that puts effort into doing and completing tasks.
Successful entrepreneurs never look at it as their day-jobs their '9 to 5's' or
'something that they do in the day', their business is their life and they work extremely
hard to accomplish their goals.
2. Self – confident - individual's trust in his or her own abilities, capacities, and
judgments, or belief that he or she can successfully face day to day challenges and
demands
3. Profit-oriented - A term used to describe a business that operates under the primary
objective of making money. Profit-oriented goals should direct the producers towards
making profit out of the business.
4. Goal-oriented – According to Cambridge Dictionary, a goal-oriented person or team
works hard to achieve good results in the tasks that they have been given.
A goal driven person will work much harder whenever there are deadlines to be met.
To be successful in life there must be the desire to set goals and work towards
achieving them
5. Persistent – continues to do something although other people do not want them to.
This is according to Cambridge Dictionary.
When most people tend to abandon an activity, successful entrepreneurs stick with
it. They are often dreamers and visionaries who see their lives as having a higher
purpose than simply earning a living.
6. Copes with failure – They are often dreamers and visionaries who see their lives as
having a higher purpose than simply earning a living.
A news blog by Charlie Thomas entitled “Coping with Failure is the Key for
Entrepreneurial Success”, says being able to bounce back from failure is one of the
leading keys to success, according to a new report into entrepreneurship.
7. Responds to feedback or open to feedbacks - Learn to be more receptive when
getting feedback. Learn to recognize the role of choice when interpreting feedback as
positive or negative.
8. Reliable - someone you can trust, honest and has a strong moral principle.
An individual is reliable and can be trusted because he behaves well in the way it is
expected.
9. Risk –taker - According to Merriam Dictionary, a person who is willing to do things
that involve danger or risk to achieve a goal.
10. Committed - feeling dedication and loyalty to a cause, activity, or job.
From an article titled “Five Traits of Highly Committed People”, it says that
comitted people constantly make new goals and are always striving to push their
boundaries and achieve more. People who are committed work hard out of habit and
out of loyalty.

If you recognize that you have some of the characteristics discussed here but do
not feel drawn to becoming an entrepreneur, you can find ways to further your goals or

5
your chosen career by putting your entrepreneurial characteristics to work for you. It
may surprise you how much recognition you will get for the good work you do.
