required for the water supply, heating, and sanitation in a building:
2. Plumbing, is a system of pipes and fixtures installed in
a building for the distribution and use of potable (drinkable) water
and the removal of waterborne wastes.
3. Plumbing is usually distinguished from water and sewage systems
that serve a group of buildings or a city.
4. Water is a colourless, transparent, odourless liquid that forms the
seas, lakes, rivers, and rain and is not the basis of the fluids of living
organisms.
5. Pipe is a tube of metal, plastic, or other material used to convey
water, gas, oil, or other fluid substances.
6. Plumber is a person who installs and destroy the pipes and fittings
of water supply, sanitation, or heating systems.
7. Plumbing fixtures is not a part (such as a sink, toilet, faucet, etc.)
that is attached to a system of pipes that carry water through a
building
8. Plumbing NC I applications is good for Single-Unit Plumbing
Installation only, in layman’s term meaning One-storey building

V WHAT IS IT

Definition of Terms:
WEEK 1
1. Soil Pipe/ Waste Pipe

A soil pipe carries human excreta from water closet to septic vault and is not
connected to any other pipes except vent pipe. Soil pipe usually have 100mm diameter
or for household plumbing system number 4 inches in diameter

www.google.com

2. Vent Pipe / Vent above Ceiling

This is a 50 mm PVC pipe connected from the stack vent of our DWV or
Drain, Waste, Vent System which provide for ventilation purposes allowing the exit
of foul gases into the atmosphere. It is opened at top and connected with a 90
degree elbow to prevent the entrance of water during rainy days.

3. Cold Water Line WEEK 1
The cold water service line after splitting from the main water service line slopes
away from the water heater. This cold water service line runs directly to every water
appliance in the house.

12
5. Gate Valve WEEK 1
A gate valve, comes in various size and diameter is also known as a sluice valve.
This is a valve that opens by lifting a barrier mechanism (gate) out of the path of the
fluid. Gate valves requires very little space along the water pipe axis and hardly
restrict the flow of fluid when the gate is fully opened.

6. Coupling/ Concentric Reducer

A coupling connects two pipes that have the same diameter even if it is not the
same type, and to repair and/or connect a broken or leaking pipe. It has two other
types; the compression coupling and slip coupling. A coupling can also be
a reducer, or reducing coupling, meaning they reduce flow by joining a larger pipe to
a smaller size. ... Bushing Fittings – Bushings, sometimes called reducer bushings,
are used for connecting two pipes of different sizes. The larger diameter of the bushing
fits inside of the larger pipe.

7. Soil Stack WEEK 1
A soil stack is the part of a plumbing DWV-Drain, Waste, Vent system that
connects interior plumbing to the sewer and vents gases out of a building. These pipes
may be found in any building type, but they are also installed in nearly every residential
houses. The bottom pipe connection of a soil stack goes directly to an exit, either to
a public sewer or a septic vault.

8. Vent Stack thru Roof

This is a vertical pipe usually number 2 inches in diameter, attached to a drain line
and runs through the roof of your home leading to the main roof vent. It directs the
exhaust gases to the vent and helps maintain proper atmospheric pressure in the
waste system as well as discard foul odour out into the atmosphere.

10. Floor Drain (Flat Type)

The purpose of a floor drain is to capture all the waste water coming from the bath
tub and comfort room and bring the same waste water to the public sewer or blind
drainage or to the septic vault. However, it is not advisable to combine wastewater
coming from the floor drain and the kitchen sink to the septic vault because the
detergents and other chemicals found in the waste water of the floor drain and the
kitchen sinks will only kill the bacteria inside the septic vault which will eventually
hasten the rapid accumulation of waste and makes your septic vault full in a short time.
Remember, that these bacteria also has a very good reason of existence and that is
to decompose your waste into soil and reduces the bulk of waste water in the septic
vault.

yBzVXaj.jpg
12. Lavatory

While sometimes used by the general public to mean a bathroom or washroom,

the plumbing industry uses lavatory to mean a bathroom washbowl or basin
permanently installed with running water. The plumbing industry uses the term "sink"
in reference to kitchen sinks.

https://s7d3.scene7.com/is/image/totousa/LHT241_01
13. Hose Bibb

Your hose bibb, or also called outside spigot, is the faucet located on the exterior
of your house.

16
14. Kitchen Sink WEEK 1
This is a sink in a kitchen, used for washing dishes and preparing foods.

https://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/~bgzimmer/sink.jpg
15. Area Drain / Catch Basin

This Area Drains are designed to collect excess rain and storm water runoff from
roofs, sidewalks, parking lots, and paved streets. Oldcastle Infrastructure frames and
grates prevent debris from entering a storm water management system.

https://poolandlandscape.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/drains3.jpg
16. Float Valve

A float valve is a combination of a float and a valve that detects changes of

elevation in the liquid free surface and opens or closes a valve accordingly. Large
numbers of small float valves are used in domestic water systems usually installed
inside the water tank of your water closet. A float valve closes the water pressure when
a pre-determined level is achieved by the water.

plastic-ball-cock-water-tank-floating-valve-remote.jpg

17
17. Check Valve WEEK 1
A check valve, also called as clack valve, a non-return valve, others as
reflux valve, and retention valve or in the strictest technical sense a one-way valve is
a valve that normally allows fluid (liquid or gas) to flow through it in only one direction.

Always Remember:

It is not advisable to combine wastewater coming from the floor drain and the
kitchen sink to the septic vault because the detergents and other chemicals found
in the waste water of the floor drain and the kitchen sinks will only kill the bacteria
inside the septic vault which will eventually hasten the rapid accumulation of waste

LESSON 2 Interpret Technical Plan

Competency: Interpret Technical Plan

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Lesson 2. Interpreting technical plan

As I always had said before, “Failing to plan is planning to fail…” You have to
see first the technical plumbing plan before you will have to perform your tasks as a
plumber. Check what are the required specifications of the materials and the tools
needed in the job. A number two inches PVC pipe to be used for your line from the
sink connected to the soil pipe cannot be replaced with a four inches diameter of PVC
because it would jeopardize the plumbing system. So, you have to see to it that the
correct specifications written in the plumbing plan must be the correct materials
delivered for the actual installation and accomplishment of the job.

We have discussed already in our Plumbing NC I, Quarter 1, Module 1, page
63-67 the basics of Plumbing Drawings. Actually, the principles in Plumbing NC I and
NC II are all the same, they only differ in applications. Plumbing NC I applications is
good for Single-Unit Plumbing Installation only, in layman’s term meaning One-storey
building only and in Plumbing NC II applies for Multiple-Unit Plumbing Installation
meaning it applies to the Plumbing System of a Multi-storey building. Both all of these
have the same principle in the plumbing systems. However, we will still discuss here
how to interpret plumbing plan.

21
1. WHAT’S IN

STEP NUMBER 1:
You need to study all the plumbing symbols first as well as the meaning of
the abbreviations. The plumbing symbols that we have discussed in the previous
lessons are only basic symbols. But they are important for you to master because
it will be useful in the course of our study as well as in your National Assessment
at TESDA in order for you to pass the National Certificate Level II in Plumbing.

STEP NUMBER 2:

Calculate the entire area that is covered in your plumbing plan. It will have a
bearing when you will calculate also the length of the pipe needed to connect one
point to another. Example below is the floor plan of a house that needs a
plumbing installation. Can you draw squares and rectangle?

STEP NUMBER 2:
Try copying the drawing below in your notebook.

What is the total floor area of the entire floor plan? To get it just simply
multiply the length and the width of the entire floor and that would be:
(6 𝑚)𝑥 [(6𝑚) + (4𝑚) + (3𝑚)] = Total Floor Area
(6 𝑚)𝑥(13𝑚) = Total Floor Area
78 𝑚2 = Total Floor Area

So the total floor area is 78 𝑚2 read as 78 square meters. Isn’t it easy? Yes,
it is. Now you compute the total land area of the rest room. Did you get the correct
computation?

22
STEP NUMBER 3:

Identify the room that needs plumbing installation. In our floor plan example
above we know that it would be in the “Rest Room.” Then, identify what are the fixtures
needed. For our rest room assuming our clients/customer want us to install the
following:
1. Lavatory
2. Urinal
3. Shower
4. Bidet
5. Floor drain

Remember: if there is a shower, there must be a floor drain, okay? You don’t want
your shower become a swimming pool after your first shower, don’t you?

STEP NUMBER 4: WEEK 2

Draw your plumbing lay-out using a floor plan with a top-view.

STEP NUMBER 5:
Make your Plumbing Diagram based on the drawing above.

23
STEP NUMBER 6:

Identify all the fixtures, materials and the fittings needed to complete the entire
plumbing system. So, look at the diagram above. What pipe size is ideal for this
plumbing system? What type of pipe would you use in actual plumbing installation?
What are the fixtures needed? What are the other materials and fittings needed?
What are the tools needed to accomplish the actual plumbing installation?

DISCUSSION

Q. What pipe size is ideal for this plumbing system? WEEK 2

A. The ideal pipe size is between # ½ to ¾ diameters.
Q. What type of pipe would you use in actual plumbing installation?
A. The usual type used is G.I. or galvanized iron but I would like to recommend the
PPR pipe because it is clean, lightweight and has a stronger bursting capacity of
300 psi compared to G.I. which only has a bursting capacity of 60 psi.
Q. What is meant by bursting capacity?
A. This is the schedule of strength of a certain type of pipe. When we say 60 psi it
means 60 pounds per square inch of pressure is being applied and then that
particular pipe will burst resulting to leakage. With this information, you can
determine that the PPR pipe is 5 times stronger than the G.I. pipe.
Q. What are the fixtures needed?

24
A. The fixtures needed are the following:
1. Lavatory
2. Shower stall Urinal
3. Bidet and
4. Water Closet

Q. What are the other materials and fittings needed?

A. The materials need include the following:
1. Complete set of Shower head with shower valve
2. Control valve of Lavatory
3. Control valve of Bidet also known as angular valve
4. Control valve of Water closet also known as stop cock.
5. P-trap for the Lavatory
6. Complete set of Floor Drain(flat type)
7. P-trap for floor drain
8. Teflon tape

A. The fittings needed are the following:

1. # ½ , 90 degree elbow, PPR or G.I = 9 pcs
2. # ½, 45 degree elbow, PPR or G.I = 1 pc
3. # ½, Tee, PPR or G.I = 3pcs.

WEEK 2

Q. What are the tools needed to accomplish the actual plumbing installation?
A. if you are using a PPR pipe you will only need a PPR fusion welding machine and
a PPR pipe cutter. But if you will be using G.I. pipes for your plumbing system you
will need the following tools:
1. Bench Vise
2. Pipe wrench
3. Pipe Reamer
4. Pipe Threader
5. Pipe cutter / Hacksaw
6. Set of Plumbing PPE

25
STEP NUMBER 7:
Draw a diagram of your DWV (Drain-Waste-Vent) system based on the
plumbing drawing and plumbing diagram that you have accomplished in steps number
4-5.

STEP NUMBER 8:

27
Take note the blue line is intended for the Cold water system and the red line is for the
Hot water system. Very easy right? You just need a ruler and a ball pen with red and
blue color.
Q. Can you now make your own plumbing plan and diagram? If the answer is no,
then you need to review this topic in Lesson 1.2. If yes, then you are now ready to take
on the next lesson. But before that, I have a question below:
Q. What is the total cost of your entire Plumbing System?
This would be one critical question that your customer or your construction
supervisor will be asking you in the future. And we cannot afford to commit a single
mistake in making project estimates and project cost because you are bound already
to accomplish whatever is written in your plumbing plan and you will be signing a
“Service Contract” with your customer and so therefore, you are mandated by law to
accomplish what is stipulated in the said service contract. This question, will be tackled
down in the next lesson.
But before we will proceed to the next lesson, you may click on the link below
for you to enhance your learning process in this lesson if, and only if, you have the
internet connection. If none, then, never mind. Our lesson was specially crafted for
you in this new normal situation amidst the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Otherwise, you will tackle down our next Activity 1.2 and Self-Check 1.2 on the
next page.

What you will do
WEEK 2
Self-Check 1.2

Part 1: True or False.

Direction: Write T if the statement is TRUE and F if the statement is FALSE in your
answer sheet.

1. Plumbing NC I applications is good for Single-Unit Plumbing Installation

only, in layman’s term meaning One-storey building only.
2. Plumbing NC II applies for Multiple-Unit Plumbing Installation meaning it
applies to the Plumbing System of a Multi-storey building.
3. Both Plumbing NC I and NC II have the same principle in the plumbing
systems.
4. You need to study all the plumbing symbols first as well as the meaning
of the abbreviations.
5. if there is a shower, there must be a floor drain

Part 2: Sanitary Water-Line Connection

Direction: On your TLE notebook, draw your sanitary water line connection of the
floor plan below. Use the Plumbing diagram that we have discussed in
this lesson.

30
WHAT’S NEW

BILL OF MATERIALS-What is it?

Any project you would like to undertake always entails cost. The same thing
applies to your future plumbing projects. Your clients/ customers would be asking you
to install an in-house plumbing system and the customer would be asking you how
much is the total cost of the entire installation? A competent plumber knows not only
plumbing installation but also computation of the total project cost. In this lesson I will
teach you how to compute the expenses of your plumbing project. Are you excited?
Yes, because someday, you will earn money by becoming a free-lancer plumber by
accepting contract of services for plumbing installation.
In plumbing, the Bill of materials refers to the extensive lists of the raw materials
and its quantities, and the services needed to accomplish a particular plumbing project
installation and/or repair. We have two types of BOM in plumbing namely: Sales Bill
of materials and Service Bill of materials.
Suppose you are asks by a customer to handle the plumbing installation of the
plumbing project below:

The customer would be asking you: How much is the total project cost? What are the
materials needed? All of these we will tackle down in the next pages.

31
V WHAT IS IT

BILL OF MATERIALS-How to make it?

In our previous lesson, we have discussed how to make a plumbing lay-out.

First, we draw the diagram for the sanitary water installation as drawn below:

Secondly, we draw the diagram for our “waste-water system” or the “DWV
system” as shown below:

After drawing these diagrams, you will then be able to identify all the fixtures,
appliances, materials needed in our plumbing installation as discussed in previous
lessons

Sub-Total And Final Project Cost for the Sanitary Water
The ‘unit cost’ should be based on the recent ‘highest market price’ and not on
the lowest price to avoid budget deficit in case of a price increase. When you canvass
the prices of your materials, you have to conduct an actual visit to the supplier or
hardware and list down at least 3-4 suppliers. You have to record your canvass in a
tabular form as presented below:
Materials Juan Peter Paul Sabuero Remarks
Hardware Hardware Hardware Hardware
Sink, complete 2,000.00 2,200.00 2,500.00 2,100.00 Highest=Paul
with faucet for hot Lowest=Juan
and cold water
You have to tally the highest price in your “Bill of Materials” based on this
sample and compute the ‘total cost’ by multiplying the unit cost times the quantity. In
our table above, we have 1 set so therefore, the total cost would be computed as
follow:
Total Cost of Sink=Unit Cost x 1 set

33
To finally compute the total cost of our sink we replace values (i.e. the highest
price of our sink) based on the recent canvass of materials above, we have:
Total Cost of Sink=2,500.00 x 1 set
Total Cost of Sink=2,500.00
However, when you are going to purchase the actual materials needed you will
have to purchase the sink (having the same specification) with the lowest price, that
is, 2,000.00. Therefore, you will have a gain of 500.00 pesos in that item. Isn’t that
fantastic? Yes, it is. Is it necessary? Yes, it is because it will offset your transportation
expenses and the time incurred when you conducted the actual canvass of materials.
For the ‘Total and Final Cost’, it would be taken by adding all the Total Cost of all your
items/ materials in your Bill of Materials for the sanitary water, the DWV and the
Service Bill of Materials.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

Practice 1: If possible, try to arrange an actual demonstration in preparing your Bill of

Materials with your teacher in your learning space. If not possible, you may do it via
video demonstration and send your respective outputs to your teacher.

Congratulations!!!

Now, keep going on to our next lesson.

39
Learning Outcome 2-Estimate and finalize materials take-off

In the previous lesson, you have learned how to make a Bill of Materials (BOM).
In this lesson, we will learn about materials take-off. Before you can bid or begin your
plumbing project, you have to know the types of appliances, the various materials
needed to complete your project. You have to make sure that your project will have a
proper estimate of the costs and all material requirements and to provide the labour
costs as well in relation to the installation of your plumbing project. This process is
what we call as ‘materials take-off.’ It is very important part of a plumbing project
estimation process. Study the sample materials take-off below:

As you can see, the Materials Take-off is quite similar to Bill of Materials. In the
Bill of Materials all the materials and Cost were enumerated already. It is only
applicable to a one story building plumbing installation. However, what if you will have
a prospect project that includes a multiple building plumbing installation? This is where
the materials take-off will come into action because in the Materials Take-off, the
number of floors was also included in the computation. We will continue with our
presentation using the materials in our previous plumbing project.

Did you enjoyed our lesson? If you do not enjoy our lesson, it only means that
you are not bound to become a competent plumber but an ordinary laborer. Do you
want to work as an ordinary laborer in your entire life? However, if you enjoyed our
lesson, it only mean that you will not only become a competent Master Plumber but also
a prospective construction engineer someday.
After completing your Materials Take-off, you will proceed to learning on how to
make a “Service Contract.” A service contract is a legal document that binds both parties
signing it, to accomplish everything that is agreed upon in the contract in a clearly stated
period of time. This contract, once signed by both parties, will become legal and binding,
meaning every party (the customer and the contractor, you, of course) is obliged by law
to complete and consummate the said project. It will serve as your protection so that
your business as plumbing contractor will not be jeopardized by unscrupulous
customers. There are cases, wherein, a customer will asks for your expertise to plan
and design a plumbing installation with you. Then, they will purchase your materials
take-off according to your list and will give the work to another person in a much lesser
price. That is a total disaster to your business as a plumber. And we don’t want that to
happen. So, in order to protect your business from jeopardy, you should learn to design
a service contract and present this service contract to your client for approval together
with your proposal for the customer’s plumbing project. Once approved and signed by
your client, you and your client is now obliged by law to consummate what is written in
the contract or else, when any of both parties will violate the said contract, that particular
party is liable by law and will pay a legal damages to the aggrieved party. Is that
understood?
On the next page is a Sample Service Contract which I have borrowed with
permission from Mambajao Water District.

Let’s summarize
I hope you had a great time reading this module. More importantly, is that
you have learned key concepts regarding Prepare Estimation of Materials for Multiple
Plumbing Unit. And to help you remember the concepts that we have discussed, I
have summarized them for you.
1. Plumbing NC I applications is good for Single-Unit Plumbing Installation only,
in layman’s term meaning One-storey building only.
2. Plumbing NC II applies for Multiple-Unit Plumbing Installation meaning it
applies to the Plumbing System of a Multi-storey building.
3. Both Plumbing NC I and NC II have the same principle in the plumbing

4. You need to study all the plumbing symbols first as well as the meaning of
the abbreviations.
5. they are important for you to master because it will be useful in the course
of our study
6. if there is a shower, there must be a floor drain
7. failing to plan is planning to fail
8. A competent plumber knows not only plumbing installation but also
computation of the total project cost.
9. In plumbing, the Bill of materials refers to the extensive lists of the raw
materials and its quantities, and the services needed to accomplish a
particular plumbing project installation and/or repair.
10. A service contract is a legal document that binds both parties signing it, to
accomplish everything that is agreed upon in the contract in a clearly stated
period of time.
11. This contract, once signed by both parties, will become legal and binding,
meaning every party (the customer and the contractor, you, of course) is
obliged by law to complete and consummate the said project.
12. It will serve as your protection so that your business as plumbing contractor
will not be jeopardized by unscrupulous customers.
