1. Melanin is defined as the natural color pigment of skin and hair, Name and
explain the two types of melanin (Award 1x4=4 Marks)

Hair stylists must have knowledge and understanding of hair diseases and disorders. State
three common contagious diseases that could prevent a cosmetologist from performing a

 Club cutting- Also known as blunt cut. Produces an even length with a blunt
hair shaft at the end.
 Tapering- Reduces both the volume and length of hair
 Notching /Pointing- It creates a chunkier effects on hair
 Thinning -Reduces bulk hair Shorten amount of hair
 Scissor over comb techniques- It makes the finished look even;

15. The skin is one of the largest organs in the body in surface area and weight.
(a) Explain FIVE functions of the skin (Award 2x5=10Marks)
 Protection – the skin prevents the absorption of many substances
because of the construction of the outer surface which form a chemical
and physical barrier.
 Excretion – small amount of certain waste of products such as water
and salt are removed from the body through the surface of the skin.
 Heat Regulation – sweat evaporates from the surface of the skin
making a cooling effect.
 Warning – the skin acts as warning against outside invasion, irritation
and redness of the skin.
 Sensitivity – the skin allows the feeling of touch, pressure, pain, heat
and cold.
 Nutrition – provides storage of fats which provides an energy reserve.
Its also responsible for producing vitamin D.
 A Secretion – produces product such as sebum which helps the skin to
be smooth and prevents it from infections.

15. It is important to maintain a clean, proper wastage adherence and organized


workstation is crucial in hair cutting to ensure a safe, hygienic, and professional
environment for both clients and hairdressers..

 Hygiene and Health: A clean workstation minimizes the risk of


infections or contamination, ensuring a safe experience for clients and
therapists.

impression, building trust and confidence in clients.

 Efficiency: A well-arranged workstation allows therapists to access


tools and supplies quickly, ensuring smooth session flow.

 Safety: Keeping the area free of clutter reduces the risk of accidents,
such as slips or falls.
