Solves problems involving permutations. M10SP-IIIb-1

CIRCULAR PERMUTATION
- The number of permutations of n distinct objects arranged in a circular pattern
given by the formula:
P = (n – 1)!
Where:
n = no. of objects
! = factorial
Example:
1. In how many ways can 6 children can set in a circular table to study?
Given: n = 6
Solution:
Find: P = ?
P= (n – 1)!
P= (6 -1)!
P= 5!
P= 5x4x3x2x1
P= 120
2. In how many ways can 7 people be seated at a round table?
Given: n = 7
Find: P = ? Solution:
P= (n – 1)!
P= (7 -1)!
P= 6!
P= 6x5x4x3x2x1
P= 720

3. Find the number of ways in which 5 people A, B, C, D, and E can be seated at a

round table, such that A and B always sit together.

Given: Pc = 4 persons Solution:

PAB = 2 persons P= (n – 1)! (n!)
P= (4 -1)! (2!)
P= (3!)(2!)
P= (3 x 2 x 1)(2 x 1)
P= 12

4. In how many ways can 3 boy and 3 girls be seated at a round table such that no
two boys sit together?
Solution:
Given: P = 3
P= (n – 1)! (n!)
boys P= (3 -1)! (3!)
P = 3 P= (2!)(3!)
girls P= (2 x 1)(3 x 2 x 1)
P= 12

Solve Problems Involving Permutations
Permutation Formula
P = n! ----- Permutation of n objects taken all at a time
n!
P= ----- Permutation of n objects taken r at a time
( n−r ) !

P= ----- Permutation with identical elements
n1 ! n2 ! ∙ ∙∙ n k
- Distinguishable Permutations

P = (n – 1)! ----- Permutation in circular pattern

3. The are 4 different Filipino books and 5 different English 3! books. In how many ways
can the books be arranged on a shelf if
a) there are no restrictions?
b) books of the same subjects must be placed together.
Solution: a) there are no restrictions? Solution: b) books of the same subjects

4. A licensed plate begins with three letters and three numbers. If the possible letters
are all vowels only, and the number of choices for each digit will only be odd
numbers, how many different license plates can be made if no letter and number is
used more than once?
Given: Solution: 5! 5!
