I. Answer the following questions in brief:

Q1. What is historic period?


Ans: The historic period is the one for which written records are available by using the written
records, we can write history.
Q2. What is pre – historic period?
Ans: ‘Prehistory’ simply means before history. The pre – historic period is that period for which
no written records are available to write its history. Information is obtained from the evidence
buried under the ground with the help of scientific method.
II. Write a short note on the following:

1. Scientific methods of measuring time and establishing age. (Dating)

Ans: Dating of the events in the pre – historic period is undertaken with scientific methods.
The remains of material evidence buried under the ground are excavated. A rough estimate of
the period of excavated evidence can be formulated by using Carbon – 14 analysis and Tree –
rings analysis. Carbon -14 dating method was developed by Willard Libby.
