HRD 2101 Communication Skills (University unit)
1. Introduction to Communication

Definition & Models

 Communication = conveying ideas from one mind to another
This document provides an introduction to the course HRD 2101
Communication Skills. It defines communication as the conveying
of ideas from one person's mind to another.

It describes the traditional conduit model of communication and

its limitations. It then provides an alternative definition of
communication as a two-way process involving the exchange of
ideas between a sender and receiver with the goal of reaching a
shared understanding. The document outlines the learning
outcomes and topics to be covered in the course.

 Conduit model (linear)—message simply “transfers” (sender →

channel → receiver)
 More effective: Interactive/Transactional model, which
emphasizes two-way exchange and shared understanding
