Parts of Speech
The students should :
Objectives know the names of different parts of speech and be aware of
their features in order to have a clear understanding of the
mechanics of writing.
Development
A document will be shared with the students related to Parts of speech, the nine types of words
based on how they function in a sentence, including nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs,
adverbs, articles, conjunctions, interjections, and prepositions.
Written work:
The students will be given a task; To practice using all nine parts of speech, use the
following writing prompt.
A teenager is trying to choose and then purchase a gift for his or her best friend. Using all nine
parts of speech, write for fifteen minutes in about 150 words about the teenager’s decision
about the perfect gift.

Sentences
The students should know:
How to organize their writing in paragraphs, when to begin a

Development
The students will be explained how to (i) construct a unified, coherent paragraph (ii) develop a
topic sentence (iii) use transitional expressions between paragraphs to emphasize the
relationships between ideas, so they help readers follow your train of thought or see
connections that they might otherwise miss or misunderstand.
Written work:
Task 1: Put the following sentences in the correct order to produce well-organised paragraphs.
Task 2: Look at the topic sentences below and discuss what kinds of information you would
expect to follow. Choose any two of the topic sentences and write paragraphs.

Revision of basic

The students should be able to:
Objectives Understand the importance of punctuation in writing.
Revise the basic punctuation marks and use them correctly in
the given piece of writing.
Development
Revision of basic punctuation: The students will revise the use of full stops, commas
and capital letters by reading a given text or newspaper article. The use of colons, semi
colons, question marks, exclamation marks will also be revised, in addition to
punctuation of direct speech.
Written Work:
Task 1: Rewrite the following sentences using commas, fullstops, semicolons,
apostrophes and speech marks as required.
Task 2: Provide the missing punctuation for the following paragraphs.

Compound, Complex
11 English and Compound- 40 minutes
Complex sentences
The students should be able to:
Objectives practice varying their sentences in type, length and structure in
order to make their writing clearer and more interesting.
Development
Compound and Complex sentences: The students will be asked to explain compound
and complex sentences by giving examples. The importance of these sentences as good
tools for explaining complicated ideas or describing long chains of events shall be
discussed in detail.
Written Work:
o Task 1: Rewrite the following paragraph, telling the same story, using more or less the
same words, but varying the sentence length and type to make the story more vivid and
interesting. When you have written your paragraph, test it by counting the ‘ands’ and
making a list of the first three words of each sentence.
o Task 2: Combine each of the following pairs or groups of short sentences into one
longer sentence. You can omit words or alter the wording where necessary. Do not rely
too much on the use of simple conjunctions such as ‘and’.
