Essay On Autism
Mice with an extra autism gene have more anxiety and seizures

A recent study has found that a gene linked to autism caused mice in their experiments to have
more seizures and anxiety. Dr. Jill Silverman is an assistant professor of psychiatry at the
University of California, Davis. She led a team of researchers to study a specific gene that might be
linked to autism.

What was the gene that they studied?

This gene the researchers studied was called UBE3A. This gene is found in a lot of tissues including
skin, stomach lining, and the brain. UBE3A can code several different proteins. One protein is
actually an enzyme that cleans up other proteins by tagging them for destruction. This is helpful for
cells to get rid of proteins they no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Doctors call this syndrome the Dup15q syndrome. This syndrome helps describe the trend we see
whenever someone has two or more copies of this chromosome. When someone has this, they tend to
also have many neurologic symptoms including anxiety, developmental delay, and seizures. The
syndrome also seems to affect speech and motor functions. A lot of these people have problems with
coordination and muscle tone.

How did they study this in mice?

To study this gene further, Dr. Silverman and her team developed genetically manipulated mice.
They specifically bred their mutant mice so that they would produce a large amount of protein of the
longest type possible in their brain. Particularly, they saw that these mice overexpressed the UBE3A
protein levels especially in the excitatory neurons of the cortex and hippocampus. The researchers
then compared their mutant mice with their normal mice to try and detect behavioral differences.

What did the research team find?

Mice overexpressing UBE3A seemed to be more anxious.

The team noticed mice with more UBE3A seemed to be more anxious. These mice were less
likely to go from dark areas of light, which might be because they are more nervous about being out
in the open and exposed. The mice were also less likely to explore their housing cages. The
researchers had put extra chambers to test the exploration behavior in their mice, and they found
their mutant mice were
United for One
In the book, Outcasts United, by St. John, my favorite chapter is actually the first one. Chapter
one is all about Luma, the soccer coach of the refugees. The reason chapter one is my favorite is
because she reminds me a lot of myself. Luma wants to part from her parents and stay in the
United States of America. Her choice came with the consequences of her parents and sister not
communicating with her again if she chooses to stay in the US. Her grandma would still
communicate about the family until she passes away in a later chapter. Another example of why
this is my favorite is because I can relate to tons of it. My dad no longer talks to me due to me
moving out at too young of an age. I moved to the city to be closer to work and school but in his
eyes I was sinning. This is also why I think I relate most to Luma. There are other reasons why I
think that I relate to Luma. Throughout the whole book, Luma never wants to give up. For example
in chapter nine, Get Lost , when Luma knows she has to find a new field for her fugeesto play on.
According to St John, on page 93, the YMCA calls and lets Luma know they found a field for her.
She never gave up on her high hopes. Luma always wanted the best for her players. I am just like
Luma, as I never give up on things. My number one struggle I never give up on is my exercise.
Luma has a great strength in her hopes. She honestly doesn t care about anyone s negative opinions.
It is crazy how much I think I relate to Luma. Just
A Research On Biometrics And Wireless Technique
Abstract The main purpose of the paper is assembling and developing an iris recognition system in
order to verify uniqueness of the human eye of faculty in a college for attendance management
system. This system based on biometrics and wireless technique solves the problem of spurious
attendance and the trouble of laying the corresponding network. Here biometric recognition is
performed with respect to iris because of its unique biological properties. The iris is unaffected by
external environmental factors and remains stable over time. It can make the college staff attendance
management more easy and effective. This paper includes image acquisition, the preprocessing
system, segmentation, feature extraction and recognition.

Keywords Iris recognition; preprocessing system; segmentation; feature extraction.

I.INTRODUCTION

Traditionally college staff attendance management methods were based on physical key, ID card,
password, etc. In all the above mentioned methods there are high chances of keys getting lost,
forgery or passwords may be forgotten. Due to these shortcomings and requirement for high level of
security have led to development of personal identification on next level using biometrics.
Biometrics refers to metrics related to human characteristics. It is used to identify individuals in a
group that ae under surveillance. Within few seconds biometric recognition is able to compare
thousands of records. Biometrics are of various kinds. Iris, facial, fingerprint
Political Ideologies, Communism, Socialism, And Liberalism
An ideology as defined by Merriam Webster is a systematic body of concepts especially about
human life or culture. This specifically does not relate to politics, but when applied it means a body
of concepts that define a country s goals and views of citizenry. All ideologies; religion, communism,
socialism, and liberalismhave varying traits and goals led by their governments. An example of
these differences is that communism values equality while liberalism values freedom. Some do not
last too long, while others have spread, liberalism especially. These ideologies also have had
opposition throughout history and have had an effect on the entire world. Political ideologies
throughout the world, including liberalism as can be seen in Great... Show more content on

Socially, prejudice toward other groups of problem come forth. In Iran, the Sunni Muslims are
hated due to the country religion being Sunni. This hate culminated after the image of Khomeini
whom was a Shiite himself. Other than religious groups, people such as women and homosexuals
are retaliated against in religiously based countries; Religion proposes equally dire outcomes for
gays, people who get tattoos, men who get haircuts, anyone who works on Sunday, or who eats
shellfish. But the cafeteria religious believers are focused like a laser on gays and find prescriptions
for hate in their ancient texts. (Wingrove) Wingrove believes that religion inside of government only
increases hatred toward people that is backed up by text and carried out harshly. Politically, laws
form out of the religion as seen in sharia in Iran. These laws affect how the country is perceived by
its own people and others. The United Nations for example could nail Iran for its laws that go
against human rights. The UN will not do this for fear of worse relations with the Iranians, but it
could someday be on the table. Many westerners find Iran s ways cruel, but they do not know
anything different and most support their government s
Persuasive Speech About Violence Against Women
What is so special about our humanity? As human, We can express ourselves however we want, We
know the differences between right and wrong, and equal does not mean that we have to act exactly
the same. But it does mean that i have the exact same rights as you, and should be treated with the
same amount with the same amount of respect and dignity you would want to be given. It should
not matter what you look like, where you from, your gender, or who you love.
We are all different and that should be respected. Everyone should be treated equally, because
violence against women is unacceptable, because the LGBT community has gone through so much
crap but they always thrive, because undocumented immigrants are treated like human garbage for
coming into a country to build a better life for themselves and their families.

Women are 90 percent of rape victims in the united states, and 13 percent of rape victim survivors
will attempt to commit suicide. Women ages 16 to 19 are four times more likely to be raped than
the general population. Imagine that a 16 to 19 year old girl at school or at a party or somewhere.
She is getting sexually assaulted by a man that probably has 100 pounds on her, and she is lying
there helpless and now imagine that this sweet girl that was just assaulted is your child. She does
not tell you because she thinks you won t believe her but instead attempts to kill herself because she
is ashamed that she could not stop it, or she tells you everything, and they

Aristotle s Views On Life And The World
Aristotle is one of the world s greatest rhetoricians. He was born in northern Greece, called Stagira.
He first studied medicine. In 367, he was sent to Athens to study philosophy under Plato. Plato
eventually died and Aristotle left Athens. He spent his time traveling and continuing his studies. In
338 he went to Macedonia and ended up tutoring Alexander the Great. He conquered Athens, which
is when Aristotle returned and set up his own school. Alexander the Great died, and Aristotle was
in danger of being put to death. He fled to Euboea, which is where he died. Aristotle s studies
focused on the reality in physical objects, instead of ideas and eternal forms which is what his
teacher, Plato, focused on. When he died,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ethos refers to the character of the speaker. Ethos is how the speaker is able to build credibility
for herself to the audience. According to Aristotle, there are three things that are absolutely
necessary in order to appear credible: competence, good intention, and empathy. When the
audience is listening to the speaker, they are asking themselves Is what this person is telling me
believable? Why should I trust them? Aristotle stated that if we believe that the speaker has a
good sense, good moral character, and goodwill, the audience is going to be more inclined to
believe what the speaker is saying. Ethos is the very first thing that an audience notices, so that
first impression is key in effective speaking. Word choice and style are very important factors
when building ethos. The speaker must consider her audience, choose words they are going to
understand, and make sure they feel comfortable. This first impression is going to lay the
groundwork for the rest of the speech. The next mode of persuasion is pathos. Pathos refers to the
emotional influence of an audience. The goal of each speech is to persuade the audience, and
pulling at their heartstrings is always a great way to do so. The aim of pathos is to reduce the
audience s ability to judge. Aristotle pointed out that emotions such as anger, pity, fear, and others all
powerfully influence our rational judgments. Appeals to emotion and passion are very common and
Transportation On Pennsylvania State Campus
Transportation on Pennsylvania State campus, via bicycle, has always been an option for students
and faculty since 1855. However, the university 150 years ago was different considering the size of
the campus and student body. In 1863, and later years, the classes totalled a measly 64
undergraduates, while in 2016 more than 40,000 students make up each undergraduate level. Every
year this number increases making university parka more crowded area in every regard from
housing to congestion of sidewalks. Regulations provided to students available online outline the
basic conditions for riding a bike on campus and highlight provisions made by the university.
However, as a student who has been on campus for a summer and two thirds of a fall semester, I
feel the rules are not only impossible to follow, but fail to ensure safety to students and faculty.
There must be action to improve the current state of transportational means on campus for students
and one of the best and simple means in doing so is through the revision of roadways on campus.

Firstly, providing safety to students who are seeking high education is known to be high priority by
the administration of Penn State. Programs such as auxiliary student police and emergency phone
lines provide students with safety during troublesome times at night, but what about safety during
broad daylight? College campuses are no stranger to vehicular accidents and cycling accidents during
the daylight hours. The
The Influence Of Past American Women Writers
The Influence of Past American Women Writers Amy Tan, Julia Ward Howe, and Judith Sargent
Murray are some of the noble women whom have helped shape the lives of their fellow gender
with the talents of their writing. Much of their writing became increasingly influential years after
it was written. Their literature allows today s modern readers to reflect on the humanity and the
treatment of women, understand history s past, and use it as an example to continue spreading
the vision of the equality of women today. Tan was known for her willingness to stand up for
herself against her mother, in pursuits to find her own dreams versus those of what her mother
had laid out for her (Showalter, Ch. Amy Tan ). Howe was a poet, and founder of the nation s
Battle Hymn of the Republic , she was known for her activism of women s rights, abolition, and
world peace (Showalter, Ch. Julia Ward Howe ). Lastly, Murray was known as the first womanof
American letters, speaking for women s rights after the American Revolutionary War (Showalter,
Ch. Judith Sargent Murray ). Tan, Howe, and Murray have proved to be influential not only in
America s historic past, but inspiration leading to today and the future as well. These women are
excellent examples to learn from in taking ownership of their women s rights and the equalities we
shall have, in our still unequal world. Amy Tan was born in Oakland, California. Both of her parents
were Chinese immigrants ( Amy Tan Biography Academy of
Cyber- Terrorism and Information Warfare
The availability of cheap cyber weapons has made cyber terrorism a growing threat to the stability
of America s critical infrastructures and society in general. Needless to say that cyber terrorism is a
major issue for American policymakers and IT professionals. The growing threat to commercial and
government entities has prompted organizations to develop effective strategies and methods to
protect their resources and assets from the threat of attackers. Such strategies and methods include
but are not limited to continual risk and vulnerability assessment, upgrade of software and use of
tools such as encryption, firewalls and intrusion detection systems and the implementation of
disaster recovery and business continuity plans in the case of a cyber incident. The following paper
will offer a few basic definitions to illustrate the concept of cyber terrorism, discuss the physical and
human aspects of cyber terrorism, offer assessment of the most pressing threats and the most
vulnerable targets, recommend methods to combat national and international cyber terrorism.
Finally, several preventative actions will be recommended for implementation. Finally, a basic
checklist/template is also provided in order to better illustrate and summarize recommendations and
suggestions.

The Strange Tales From A Chinese Studio Essay
The Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, collected and put into text by Chinese scholar Pu
Songling, is a collection of tales of mostly alchemic, supernatural, and paranormal nature. One of
the common threads that runs through the collection is that of the sexual encounters and sexual
relations between people, people and creatures, and people and supernatural beings. These stories
deal with the subject of sexual indulgence, and clearly connote sex as a negative and dangerous
aspect of human desires. Stir Fry, the last story in Strange Tales, however, forcefully deviates
from that trend of the perception of sexual desire. In Stir Fry, Pu glides over the topic of the dildo
and treats it as if it were just any normal other object that would be ridiculous to cook and serve
guests at dinner. A scholar s sexual desires are no less strange than the tales of sex in stories such
as The Fornicating Dog, The Painted Skin, Snake Island, and especially Lotus Fragrance. The
sexual nature of the toy Pu ignores completely, and he enforces the idea that sexual desires or
encounters are not as strange or taboo as Pu himself makes them out to be in his earlier stories in the
Strange Tales collection. Pu Songling demarcates his true views of sex in the culmination of all the
stories in Stir Fry, as the conclusion of the collection he laid out before his readers thus far. Pu
establishes his thoughts on sexual desires and encounters through his dramatic changes in syntax

Masculinity In The Blind Side
The movie that I chose to write about is the 2009 movie, The Blind Side. It is a film about a
young African American male, nicknamed Big Mike who is basically homeless and struggles in
school. Michael grew up in a very bad neighborhood and was taken away from his mother at the
age of 7, who is a crackhead and is described as promiscuous with lots of kids. We see the character
depiction difference in the very scene when Leigh Anne goes to visit Michael s mother, Denise.
She is dark skinned, disheveled and her apartment or housed is a complete mess. This is the total
opposite of what Leigh Anne is, which is organized, neat and clean, well dressed and who s house
is big, beautiful and clean. We then learn that Denise doesn t even remember who his father is.
Michael is in and out of foster homes because he keeps running back to his mother although he
doesn t live with her. Michael gets into a private Christian school although his grades are bad

We see Leigh Anne as an assertive, dominant white female over her husband and the high school
football coach. We also see it when she goes looking for Michael in the bad neighborhood and
exchanges words with one of the men there as she mentions that she always packs heat. Deviant
black masculinity that might appear threatening to the white community is then confined to real
and imaginary ghettos. (Montes de Oca pg136) At one point when a woman who investigates
with the NCAA even questions the absurd situation and although she doesn t say it, she s
probably seeing it as being saved by a white savior as well, except that her reasons are all wrong.
This film reminded me a little bit of Precious because of the poor academic skills and the feeling
of being out of place socially. The other thing that reminded me of it was because in that movie Ms.
Rain and Mrs. Weiss were her white saviors although they technically weren t
