The Battle of Cannae
The battle of Cannae was the third victory for the Carthaginians against the Romans, during the
second Punic War [ca. 216 BCE]. The battle at Cannae would prove to be the battle that made
Hannibal famous, and nearly bring the entire Roman Empire to its knees. For the Carthaginians the
battle brought great victory and support to their interracial army. For the Romans it brought
symbolic importance and lessons learned as well as the need for military strategic adaptation.
Hannibal a great general by the age of 26 was sworn in his youth to look on the Romans with utter
contempt and to destroy them in their highest ranks. The Romans on the other hand mocked
Hannibal time and time again by sending out their lesser soldiers. By the time the... Show more

Hannibal proceeded to send out his African veterans to form two wings on either side of the
Romans. Suddenly the crescent formation began to break up and the Romans began to flood in like
a dam that has burst. Scores and scores of them began to overtake Hannibal and his men. However
the veteran Africans stood firm unlike the Roman Calvary who had fled. On the Carthaginian right
wing the Numidians had triumphed over the Romans allied Calvary. Ill matched as the Carthaginian

enemy as they fled. At the same time the Roma legions continued to drive at Hannibal s center. They
had penetrated so far that the African infantry on the wings projected on either side like the banks
enclosing a moving river of armour. Meanwhile Hasdrubal, Hannibal s staff officer, who heeded the
Carthaginian heavy Calvary, had completely routed the Roman right wing and now brought his
horsemen around behind the roman Legions, attacking the allied horse on their left. Already
disorientated from the attack by the Numidians, the Carthaginian heavy Calvary on the Romans rear
proved to be too much and completed the collapse of the Roman left wing. At a trumpets sound the
moment had arrived. Hannibal s tactic of double envelopment of the Roman Legions was complete.

Abstract

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) , is a permanent intergovernmental

Organization, created at the Baghdad Conference on September 14 th, 1960, consisting of the world
s major oil exporting nations. It was founded to coordinate and unify the petroleum policies of its
members, to serve as a platform for oil producers to achieve their economic objectives by limiting
supplies in the hope of keeping prices and profits high. OPEC s influence on the market is
undeniable. Because its member countries hold the vast majority of crude oil reserves (about 80%)
and nearly half of natural gas reserves in the world, the organization ... Show more content on

The supreme authority of the organization, OPEC Conference consists of representatives of OPEC
Member Countries. It s supported by the OPEC Secretariat, directed by the Board of Governors and
run by the Secretary General, and by various bodies including the Economic Commission and the
Ministerial Monitoring Committee. (OPEC, March 2009) According to OPEC website The Member
Countries consider the current situation and forecasts of market fundamentals, such as economic
growth rates and petroleum demand and supply scenarios. They then consider what, if any, changes
they might make in their petroleum policies. For example, in previous Conferences the Member
Countries have decided variously to raise or lower their collective oil production in order to
maintain stable prices and steady supplies to consumers in the short, medium and longer term.

Does OPEC control the oil market?
According to OPEC, No, OPEC does not control the oil market. OPEC Member Countries produce

English Piracy Definition
Very few people today, perhaps those who have stared death in the face, can possibly comprehend
what it would have been like to stand on the gallows at high tide as the executioner fashioned a
noose around the pirate s neck; the last significant act before his final voyage, a short drop and a
quick stop. The English political and legal processes that delivered this defiant captain and hundreds
of others condemned for piracyto their final destination is the focus of this study.
Their contemporaries described them as Robbers, Opposers, and Violators of all Laws, Humane and
Divine. Many viewed themselves as a more selfish reincarnation of Robin Hood, stealing from
wealthy merchants, foreign traders, and abusive captains, and in doing so, threatening ... Show more

After nearly two decades of anti pirate policies in the colonies, colonial officials no longer
deemed it necessary to aggressively convict anyone suspected of piracy out of fear of losing their
charter, as they had prior to 1705. Furthermore, the defining legal question leading to extreme
ambiguity in the prosecution of pirates during the seventeenth century was at what point did
acting outside of one s commission constitute an act of piracy? The conclusion of Great Britain s
hostilities with France and Spain in 1713 rendered this question irrelevant as the new wave of
pirates targeted primarily British, not neutral or allied ships, clearly defining their aggression as
piracy. The change in targets also reduced the prosecution s need to rely on accomplice testimony,
a source of controversy in civil law proceedings, since attacks occurring off nearby shores provided
easier access to victim testimony. Finally, the increase in colonial newspapers and the dissemination
of their publication of piracy trials reports did assist in reducing procedural inconsistencies, but not
in the way previously suggested. Instead, it was the increased familiarity with civil law and piracy
trial procedures within the reports, combined with

The Grasshopper And The Ant In Arthur Miller s Death Of A...
Have you ever heard the story of the Grasshopper and the Ant?
It goes something like this:
In the shimmering sunlight of the summertime, a Grasshopper sits on a warm stone, chirping,
singing, joyous. Not so far away, an Ant hauls an ear of corn to it s home, in preparation for winter.
And winter comes. The Grasshopper, now not so joyous, goes to the Ant, begging, pleading for help,
only to be rebuked by the Ant. The Grasshopper cries: But I sung all summer! To which the Ant
replies: Ah, and perhaps you should dance all winter.
There are variations. But it is with this sentiment that the protagonist of Miller s Death of a
Salesman, Willy Loman, has managed to stay so committed to his goals. One of his sons, Happy,
even describes him as never so happy as when he s looking forward to something . Building towards
something. Willy also seems to be obsessed with the past, with his vibrant flashbacks, and the future,
with his grandiose plans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He describes Charley, his neighbour, as liked, but not well liked. He does not believe that
Charley is truly successful. Willy can be seen ignoring the promise of Bernard when he was
young, a meek and studious boy, instead praising his Adonis sons. But as the play continues, we
see that Charley has his own business, and Bernard is going to argue a case in front of the
supreme court. These not well liked fellows are doing quite well. There s an excellent line from
Charley pointing out the contrary realities in Willy s perspective: Why must everybody like you?
Who liked J. P. Morgan? Was he impressive? In a Turkish bath he d look like a butcher. But with his

Catalog Of Unabashed Gratitude By Ross Gay
Thesis

Throughout Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude by Ross Gay, Gay shows how nature controls
emotional responses, forces and other higher or more powerful things. Furthermore, nature brings
about unnatural aspects causing greater control of forces in nature, and outside of the natural realm.
Many cycles revolve around nature producing a circle, or cycle, of life that changes depending on
different things. Even more, nature can interact with man made things in ways that disrupt it. Gay
portrays nature as a commanding force, something that s located everywhere. Also, it shows how the
nature forces have consequential reactions, resulting in everything being controlled by nature.
Ultimately, this shows how Gay portrays nature as a controlling ... Show more content on

The Noise Of A Sound Floor Insulation That Reduces Noise...
1.INTRODUCTION
Many places are becoming urbanized; so to save space many people live together in one building
like apartments or a duplex house. There can be lots of noises generated by activities such as
walking from adjacent buildings. The noise impact on people s quality of life goes beyond
annoyance. It may affect psychological aspect of health as well.
There are several ways to eliminate this problem; one is to reduce sound by increasing the distance
between the source and the receiver and the second is using noise barriers to reflect or absorb the
sound. To effectively reduce internal noise transferred from the adjacent buildings and maintain the
comfort of the resident, it is important to have adequate sound floor insulation. Sound insulation in a
building reduces the sound pressure with respect to sound sources and receivers.
In this report, I will discuss the installation of a sound floor insulation that reduces noise from
outside. Additionally, I examine effects and causes of the noise.
Most of information I used in this report was collected from the recent technical databases provided
by Kansas State University Libraries. I have also gathered relevant information in academic journals.
This paper is organized into three main sections. First, Section 2 provides brief problem of the noise.
Second, Section 3 discusses the way to reduce the noise from neighboring units by installing
adequate sound insulation. Third, Section 4 summarizes my research findings in a

On the other hand, when there are windy, humid, and overcast nights with low humidity, there are
less chances of the occurrence of the urban heat islands. It is also found that the urban heat island is
not only affected from the prevailing wind circulation in the city and the surrounding areas but also
from the sea breezes and drainage winds.

Source: US Environmental Protection Agency In order to define the urban heat islands and to assess
the thermal urban environment there are different tools, mechanism, and networks which have been
created and introduced by different experts and specialized organizations. For example, the satellite
images are commonly used in the thermal infrared. The satellite images allow tracking the changes
of the temperatures in the urban areas at different times of the day and they also help in determining
the differences in the temperature of the urban areas as compared with the surrounding areas.
Furthermore, meteorologist and other urban heat island experts use to employ different networks of
weather stations to conduct the analysis of different urban areas. These studies help in identifying
the peak temperatures of urban areas and the time of the day and year when temperatures reach their
peaks. In the same way, the mesoscale weather
The Importance Of The 2014 National Latin Convention
The 2014 National Latin Convention was well underway. Everyone from each school clapped and
cheered as we met at our first general assembly. The officers introduced themselves individually,
each person explaining the importance of Latin in their daily lives along with the many ways that
Latin conventions have changed the way they interact with other students. These speeches sparked
an idea in my mind along with the minds of few of my close friends. After assembly concluded we
began discussing the importance of each subject in our daily lives and inevitably our future.
Opinions varied amongst the group members, with the most important classes ranging from math
and science all the way to various arts and history classes. This is where a distinct

Analysis Of Capitalism And Freedom By Milton Friedman
First, let s begin by analyzing the arguments put forwards for a market system by poster boy for
modern laissez faire capitalism, Milton Friedman. His arguably most famous text Capitalism and
Freedom puts rests the argument for free market capitalism upon three pillars of thought that
Friedman believes to be self evident: privately operated markets are naturally occurring,
significantly more efficient than a centrally planned economy because of the limited information
available to individual actors, and morally justified as an expression of the rights to self
determination and political freedom. As defined by Friedman, Political freedom means the absence
of coercion of a man by his fellow men. The fundamental threat to freedom is the... Show more

Rather, the problems come with his third assertion, that markets are inherently liberating and that
they are the antidote to coercion. If Friedman genuinely thought that market societies prevent
coercion, perhaps he should have looked into who paid for the founding of the University of
Chicago. That would be a certain John D. Rockefeller, the richest American of all time and a
ruthless subjugator of his laborers. In its heyday, Rockefeller s Standard Oil could give any
authoritarian dictatorship a run for its money when it came to the coercion of labor and the tamping
down on the rights of individuals to self determination. Friedman fails to recognize the threat of
market entities that can be just as tyrannical and corrosive as overzealous governments. In Friedman
s view, monopolies are solely the result of government intervention in the economy. Operating under
the false assumption that monopolies will always fall apart unassisted because of competition,
Friedman blames their existence on outside factors and not the natural desire of capitalists to
exploit. Following his circular logic, because private tyranny of a monopoly only exists because of
government meddling, whatever suffering the workers face at the hands of their capitalist
oppressors counts as political oppression. The other major failure
