How I Learned to Read and Write by Frederick Douglass and...
How I Learned to Read and Write by Frederick Douglass and Mother Tongue by Amy Tan are
essays that share a common theme. The theme is opposition and how it is necessary to build
strength. In the essay How I Learned to Read and Write , Frederick Douglass explains that he was
born into slavery and faced his own ignorance with a resolve to overcome this challenge. Faced
with oppression by the master and mistress of the house, a young Frederick Douglass used any
means necessary to defeat ignorance and open his mind up to great treasures of knowledge. In
contrast, Amy Tan, the writer of the essayMother Tongue, found opposition residing in her own
thoughts and impressions. Tan a first generation Asian American reflects upon her love of writingand
how living in a Chinese home influenced her use and understanding of the English Language.
Living with a mother who spoke English in what Amy considered a less than perfect way, caused
Amy to limit her view of her mother. When Tan experienced this one sided thinking about her own
language abilities while in college it caused reason for reflection and a change of heart in the author.
Opposition in all things is a necessary step in the learning process of this life. How I Learned to Read
and Write and Mother Tongue contain contrasting examples of opposition. Using the literary
elements of point of view, setting, and characterization will show their effectiveness in building
strength thru opposition. Born into
E. Coli Bacterial Growth
Figure 2 represents the agar plates after E. coli bacterial growth. Agar plate (top left) labeled
DNA did not contain any bacterial cells with plasmid DNA ,and had cell growth in the form of a
lawn. The DNA/+AMP (top right) labeled plate lacked bacterial cells with plasmid DNA, but
contained the antibiotic ampicillin. There was no bacterial cell growth observed in this plate. Agar
plate (bottom left) labeled +DNA/+AMP contained competent bacterial cells, as well as ampicillin.
For this plate there was localized bacterial cell growth with minimal color observed. The +DNA
/+AMP/+IPTG (bottom right) plate contained competent bacterial cells, ampicillin, and isopropyl β
D thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG). Bacterial cell growth was present,... Show more content on

Results of the DNA plate coincide with the expectation of lawn growth due to the non selective
Luria broth and agar plate which allows for almost anything to grow. The DNA/+AMP labeled
plate also yields expected results with no bacterial cell growth. The cells do not contain DNA
plasmid that encode for the antibiotic resistant gene, preventing the formation of the bacterial cell
wall. There is a discrepancy in the agar plate labeled +DNA/+AMP because a blue colony is
observed and the plate contains bacterial cells. This unexpected growth could be due to cross
contamination with the +DNA/+AMP/+IPTG plate. For the last plate (+DNA/+AMP/+IPTG), the
observations solidify the expectancy of minimal bacterial growth with production of pigmentation.
One colony is observed with satellite cells, in addition to a miniscule spot of blue pigmentation. The
Competent cells are capable of resisting ampicillin. IPTG, the inducible promoter, results in the
production of color. With gene regulation, competent cells can acclimate to their environment due to
methods of turning genes on and off5.
This experiment was completed to conduct bacterial transformation and introduce ampicillin
resistant DNA plasmid to E. coli bacterial cells. Observations are made of the difference in cell
growth due to various environments provided within agar
Aeneid Women
Women of The Aeneid
The Aeneid a beautifully epic poem written by Virgil. This epic tale consists of a Trojan warrior
Aeneas go through trials and tribulations of fate. Though many of his problems consist of women
who have loved and loathed him in his life. These women nonetheless have made his founding of
Rome come true. Every woman in this story has contributed to Aeneas s destiny and character.
Minerva is first shown in the second book of The Aeneid. Aeneas is going back to the war and is
describing what lead them to bring in the horse. He recounts of a Trojan boy named Sinon. Sinon
goes on to say that the hose is a gift for the goddess Minerva. That she has turned her backs on the
Greeks because of Ulysses destruction of a temple. Now this horse will appease Minerva and bring
them victory among the war with Greece. A priestess not believing the man decides to try to
puncture it with a spear. From this action Laocoon and his two sons are soon eaten by two serpents
that have come from the ocean. The serpents then slither to the Minerva shrine. Thus, giving the
trojans enough evidence to bring in the horse. By Bringing Minerva into the lie of the gift, they
ultimately started the destruction of Troy. Minerva influenced these men to accept this gift and
ultimately brings Troy s down fall and brings Aeneas to flee with his family. This woman influenced
the beginning of Aeneas s travels and the eventual discovery of Rome. In the beginning of our story
we are introduced to
How Did The Bible Influence American History
For multitudes of people the Bible is a source of justice, of freedom, and of hope. The Bible is
inspiration for achieving a prosperous life. However, for some the Bible entails stories that ring
true to their own histories, but not in a positive way. Specifically, the story of indigenous
populations bears a striking similarity to one of the most frequently referenced stories in the Bible,
Exodus. The one outlook from Exodus that is consistently neglected is that of the Canaanites, the
indigenous people destined for destruction in order for the previously oppressed Israelites to reach
success. When looking at American history, the Native Americans have undergone a near mere
image of the Canaanite s story. To me, this is a major issue and should be considered with weight....

Instead I have witnessed the opposite, certain people are continuously being chosen as the
worthiest and are encouraged to induce suffering on those who do not agree with their
philosophies in order to gain success for themselves. This is not a view I embolden; one should
never use another as a stepping stone for their own prosperity. Yet, the Bible supports and justifies
this action and disappointingly its influence is present in American history. On numerous
occasions during the formation of our great nation we have taken advantage of the less fortunate
or powerful in order to further ourselves. Explicitly, this can be seen in the Native American side
of the story. Hence, I agree with Warrior s thesis to his article, although we have become more
progressive in encouraging justice for all, we cannot let the injustice of the Bible go unnoticed.
Furthermore, it is time that we reevaluate the use of Biblical texts as a reference applied to all
oppressed groups. Nevertheless, the Bible will continue to be a valuable source, no matter if
inducing hope or requiring one to question and inspect their own
Telecommunication Act Of 1996 Essay
The Telecommunication Act of 1996 was passed on the 8thof February, 1996. It gave rise to a huge
revolution in the field of telecommunication in the United States. This law basically derives most of
its features from the Communications Act of 1934 ( the 1934 Act ) and was formed on the basis of a
general agreement which concentrated more on advancement in technology based on competition
rather than monopoly. The ultimate motive of this Act was to bring about major changes in the
telecommunication arena.
This new Act basically portrays the idea that the service providers should not be limited to the
regulatory categories and that they should be allowed to compete openly in the robust market place
and be able to handle the active participants and the stiff competition. The Act provides a proof from
the government to making sure that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Big Bend Rocks
Geology of the Big Bend (Rocks)
The only types of rocks found in Big Bend National park are Sedimentary (N.P). The specific
names for these rocks are: limestones, shale and sandstones, clay, Lava Flow, Conglomerate,
Marl, and Cherty Limestone are found in this park (N.P). These rocks were likely abundant
throughout the park; when the area was covered by a salty sea during the Cretaceous period (N.P).
The way how these rocks formed is by the results of pebbles being cemented together. Another way
how the rocks can form is by how the earliest layer of rock was deposited in a relatively deep marine
environment. After the next layer above the shale indicates that the rock is deposited in a very
shallow way, that s when the ocean water starts
Step Brothers Movie Analysis
How many 40 year old unemployed slackers do you know? Now imagine 2 of them under the
same roof obnoxiously fighting about childish things. Step Brothers from start to finish is
exactly this displaying 2 outrageously comical actors in Will Ferrell and John C Reilly bickering
back and forth trying to learn how to cope with one another. The glory of this film comes from the
constant one liners that make no sense but fit the film perfectly, the childish behavior, and the
elementary school comebacks mixed in with the adult language which adds a different but great
comical sense that few movies have been able to portray before. Such as when Ferrell refers to
Reilly as a Big, fat, curly headed f*** . This line had me rolling on the floor due to the seriousness
of Ferrell and the reaction of Reilly and the fact that it is a simple 3rd grade insult with an F bomb
thrown in there that just makes it all that more funny. Although Talladega Nights and the Anchorman
trilogy had better storylines none compare to the pure comedythat Step Brothersprovides. Step
Brothers is Will Ferrells most entertaining movie made to date, and is one that can be watched over
and over without losing its humor.

Step Brothers stars Will Ferrell(Brennan: 39 years old) and John C Reilly(Dale: 40 years old).
They both are unemployed stay at home loafers who do nothing besides watch cops and play the
drums. When Brennan s mom Nancy and Dale s dad Robert marry Brennan and Dale are forced to

An Admirable Spanish Novel, The Ingenious Gentleman Don...
Don Quixote fully titled The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha is an admirable
Spanish novel by an eminent novelist Miguel De Cervantes. Cervantes wrote many novels while in
prison but unfortunately this was the only reputed work produced by him which became world s
first best seller and literature s great masterpiece. It encompasses the history, culture and the general
environment in Spain. According to me, this magnum opus became so high flying because of its
universally recognized matchless idea of Quixotism (pursuits of lofty romantic ideas) combined with
the innovative characters.
The concept of the novel is simple: Alonso Quijano (Don Quixote), landowner from La Mancha, is
obsessed with his library of chivalrous books. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The purpose of the book also pertains with the thought of Quixotism and the invention of
characters. Clearly, it was to undermine the influence of the vain and empty book of chivalry in
order to provide some merry and prudent material for reader s entertainment. Although it is
immaterial he did make a complete end to the further publications of chivalric romances.
Cervantes himself wrote in the latter section of part 1, for chivalry, offers wide and spacious
window through which the pen may run without any hindrance. Perhaps Don Quixote owes his
genesis to these notions of his author. But as Cervantes launches his idealistic and possessed hero
on a career open to public contempt, the possibilities of a many leveled, kaleidoscopic theme may
have become apparent very early if the characters were not incorporated in a beguiling way. The
way he integrated his character not only helped him produce an idealistic effect on his work but also
kept track of his idea of Quixotism in the quixotic environment created by Don Quixote all
throughout the novel
So, while Cervantes is presenting a vivid ideology of Quixotism it was really requisite for him to
have particular relationship with his characters as well as the reader and he did succeed in doing so.
Don Quixote presents this interesting aspect of a novelist who learns and grows in coincidence with
his own characters. As he lives with them and loves them, Cervantes investigates
