By doing this assignment, I learnt to analyse, evaluate, and apply business theories and concepts to

consumers must be able to quickly and fully manage any curveballs that come its way. A critical
evaluation of Subway s actions based off the 5 principles of successful HROs is further testament
of its inability to predict, prepare for, and properly respond to such an event. This is evident
through the company s lack of ethical decision making, poor employee communication, and
lackluster outward communications and PR strategy. Moreover, there is substantial evidence that
the company knew about Fogle s actions and did not address them as soon as they came to light.
The subsequent analysis of Subway on the 5 principles of successful HROs provides further
evidence of its ineptitude: Preoccupation with Failure Subway did not practice good preoccupation
with failure. Preoccupation with failure entails developing a full understanding of what and how
operations can go wrong and action plans in the case of such events. Initially, Subway did not
thoroughly consider the risks associated with aligning itself with a spokesperson. In doing so, a
brand completely ties itself to the actions and behaviors of that person in a way that carries far

The Joy Luck Club mothers can feel their daughter s impression on them when they see their
daughters growing impatient every time they speak Chinese; they think their daughters perceive
them as being stupid because of their incapability of speaking fluent English. The language barrier
