Sports involve physical activities that require skills and enhance physical fitness. This is
skill-related physical fitness and is also called sports fitness . Due to the involvement of
motor activities, it can also be called motor fitness . There are six components of skill-related
physical fitness.
1. Agility – the ability to quickly change direction in response to stimuli
2. Balance – the ability to maintain equilibrium and stay in control of the body’s position
3. Coordination – the ability to use different body parts and senses simultaneously to
react efficiently
4. Power – the amount of work done in relation to time
5. Reaction time – the ability to quickly react to a stimulus
6. Speed – the ability to move quickly from point A to B
15
Factors influencing skill-related performance are heredity, practice, and
specificity training.
Heredity plays a role in several components of skill-related physical fitness,
such as speed and reaction time. It provides some individuals with inherited
skill-related fitness.
Another factor is practice. Skills can develop and improve through practice.
Devoting more time in practice allows faster improvement and attainment of
full potential in a particular activity.
Specific training is another factor that involves skill-oriented practice, such as
working on specific skills and skill-related components.
