Mayan Farming Techniques
Most Ancient Mayans were farmers and are famous for the farming techniques they developed.
These techniques were so popular among the Mayans that they are still used in their communities
today, over two thousand year later. Most of these ancient communities had a communal farm for
the elderly, widowers, and sick people. The different families took turns working these plots to help
the less fortunate. Each family group had its own plot or plots of land that they farmed for their own
family unit. The Mayans divided roles between the men and women. The men were hunters. The
women worked the farm, cooked the food, raised the children, took care of the animals, and wove the
families clothing. Just like in many cultures the women did most... Show more content on

In those areas where there was not an abundance of farm land, the Mayans had to be resourceful.
They would build stone walls on terraces in the mountainous region to level out the ground for
planting. They had to put a lot of thought into the way they built these terraces so that there was
not a loss of crops due to water run off and erosion. Many times there were canals close by these
terraces to help irrigate the crops. These terraces allowed the Mayan s to do something called
Multi cropping. This is the practice of planting and harvesting a plot of land multiple times a year.
With canals and dams around these terraces the Mayans had water in these areas year round
allowing them to farm year round. Terracing made it possible for the Mayans to use land that was
otherwise useless to grow
Possibility Of The American Dream
The American Dream is a goal that many, if not all, Americans hope to achieve. The definition
differs among those that dream of it, but the general idea is the same: to find some sort of success
in life. The American Dream does not come easy to everyone; some believe that over time, the
American Dream has become unachievable. The American Dream is still accessible; it just takes a
lot of effort, confidence, and sacrifice to achieve.
The American Dream is not an easy thing to achieve. There could be multiple things stopping you
from achieving it. For some people, self reliance and sacrifice are what make it the American
Dream possible. In the article, Is the American Dream Still Possible? by David Wallechinsky, the
author believes that self reliance and sacrifice are needed to achieve the American Dream.
Wallechinsky writes about a woman named Shelly Comer who has worked her whole life to give
her kids a good life. She has an annual income of $70,377. Shelly says, But I have nothing saved
for me... I m putting it all into the kids, so that they can succeed in school, (Wallechinsky, 11).
Shelly is giving the money she would use for herself to her kids in order for her kids to have good
lives. Another example is from the movie adaption of Raisin in the Sun, written by Lorraine
Hansberry. Raisin in the Sun is a movie about an African American family living in the south side of
Chicago during the 1950s. The Younger family gets a check for $10,000 (which is around $82,000 in
Water Scarcity In Africa
Water scarcity occurs when there is the lack of sufficient available water resources to meet the
needs of water within a region. The continent of Africa is a main region that deals with this scarcity;
as the most impoverished continent in the world ( World Bank Poverty Data 2016 ), almost all
countries in Africalack major resources such as water, causing several organizations and groups to
donate their time and contributions. Water scarcity is categorized by economic and physical levels.
Economic growth can result in physical water scarcity as water is channeled into economic
production. Physical water scarcity occurs when the demand of water surpasses a region s ability to
provide the populations with needed water. On the other hand, economic water scarcity occurs when
government investments in water resources are so inconsiderably low that they are not able to meet
clean water demands for the population, which results in people drinking and using contaminated
water.
Groups such as non governmental organizations often work in water scarce areas to help those in
need. Non governmental organizations are not for profit groups that aid countries worldwide
through donated funding. There are over four thousand NGOs throughout Africa helping to provide
clean water sources, fighting for poverty, and contributing to education (Edelman Haugerud, p. 113)
By comparing celebrity and non celebrity endorsed NGOs, the objective of my research is to gain a
better understanding of
Horace Mann Research Paper
Horace Mann (1796 1859)
Horace Mann was a kid who was born into poverty in Franklin, Massachusetts. He would always
go down to the library to study and learn. He taught himself. The library was his home away from
home. He practically lived there. Horace would read stories beyond his wildest dreams and all the
facts and information he needed. He loved them. Horace was hooked. Since he was born into
poverty he wanted to turn his life around. Horace was determined to make sure everyone gets the
education that he would have liked, he wanted to help.
Early life
Horace was born May 4, 1796, he had no education. So he taught himself all the basic subjects. He
went to the library a lot. It was his favorite place. It was like he couldn t read enough. He grew up
fast and by the time he was twenty he was admitted into the sophomore class at Brown University. It
was a spectacular experience for him because he never really had an education. At that university he
took interest in politics and education. Upon graduation Horace gave a speech about the
advancement of the human race through education and how it would help the human race. He
believed that if he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He worked there from 1827 to 1833. In 1835 he worked with the massachusetts senate for two more
years. He spent most of his time aiming at improving infrastructure like railroads and canals. While
Mann served in the Senate the Massachusetts educational system was suffering with the quality of
education deteriorating. So in 1837 the state opened up the first board of education, Mann was the
secretary. In 1838 Mann started a weekly journal, it was about education. It was for teachers and
anybody who would listen. The journal was called common school journal . With funds from the
boards activities at a minimum, the position needed more moral leadership than anything else, Mann
proved himself up to the
Social Role And Social Roles
Everybody in the world belongs to a subcultural group (people that come together that seek out
others sharing similar ideas or views) or plays a social role in it. Playing in a social role, as
individuals, we act in certain situations differently, such as in a work place, home, or around your
peer groups. I believe it s a real occurrence that a lot of people deal with daily. The ideology of a
subculture group or the social roles you play forms by separating or belonging in it and forming
personal norms, sanctions, material objects, symbols, language patterns, and social institutions.
Such as me being an employee (sales associate) at Payless and being a younger sister to an older
brother which have similar ways but they also have a few differences.
To begin with, when it comes to working for an economic institution I play a certain social role when
being a sales associate. I wouldn t act the same way at my job like I do with my family members
or my friends such as clowning around, teasing, cursing, or pulling pranks on each other. In my
job description there are norms and sanctions that I need to follow, breathe, and live by them. I m
responsible for following the Company s safety and environmental laws, regulations, and
procedures at work. For instance, always come in on time (unless you call in), follow the safety
policies for ourselves and customers such as prevention of accidents removing things that can
cause a fall or slip such as a 3 or 8 step ladder s or carts (children might mistake it as a toy), making
sure boxes on top of the rack shelves are less than 8 inches high (not in the way for sprinkles or
falling over), making sure each aisle is clean (nobody s going to come into a dirty store), putting
shoes in their right particular areas and sizes from kids on the left hand side, women s in the
middle, and the men s on the right hand side and straight across the back of the store. In addition,
to safety reasons in work wear we can wear almost about anything but must be comfortable like
business wear or casual (no jeans, open back sandals/heels, and must be knee length) and have a
Payless store tag always, also when it comes to lifting boxes we must always wear a black back
support belt while lifting.

The Is Representative Of A. Y Gasset s The Dehumanization...
1) Oliverio Girondo s poetry is representative of a new style of art encompassed in José Ortega y
Gasset s The Dehumanization of Art. Aesthetics no longer conform to the traditional classical
style but instead, champions a futurist type meant to bypass the limitations of rationale in a
trivial and playful nature likened to sport. Girondo clearly breaks from the platonic ideals of
beauty and delves into the aesthetics of the grotesque by using antipoetic language, which
sublimes the abject. This is made obvious early in Scarecrow other anomalies as he writes that he
couldn t care less if women have breasts like fresh magnolias or withered figs, skin smooth as a
peach or rough as sand paper. [...] breath of an aphrodisiac or the breath of an insecticide.
(Girondo 7). Girondo often uses ludic and vulgar language and has a clear objective of relegating
humans to beasts or objects, for example, he describes May a spider s foot sprout from each of
your pores, [...] may all the inhabitants of the city mistake you for a urinal. [...] May your family
amuse itself deforming your bone structure, so that mirrors, looking at you, commit suicide out of
sheer repugnance (Girondo 75). Girondo s scarecrow calligram illustrates the new style of art
masterfully as he creates an extended metaphor to ridicule bourgeois ideals, literarily from head to
toe intended to scare bourgeois aesthetics, instead of accustomed crows. Girondo ultimately
describes that a book should be put together like a
Essay The Role of Database Administrator
Importance
Few companies today can exist without an IT department. The IT department contains many of the
company s technology experts. Almost all companies rely on computers to some degree whether it is
an international conglomerate or a small startup company. Some companies are very dependent on
computer systems while others use them only for accounting for payrolls and everyday computer
tasks. Most organization, even the smallest company have people whose job is to make sure that the
computer system is up and running or an emergency contact to call when the computer systems goes
down. In the future, I want to take the head of a database administrator of an IT department whether
the size of the company is small or enormous.

My career might start off as a database designer. Database designers determine what are best types
of databases to solve certain problems and work with database tools in order to develop those
databases.
After a database designer, I could be promoted to a manager role. Knowledge managers have a
much higher level knowledge to business problems than database designers. Knowledge managers
usually focus on an area like accounting and working with database designers to develop databases
that meet the needs of the users. In contrast to database designers, knowledge managers handle
different tasks. Knowledge managers interfere with users and database designers in order to ensure
that the databases meet the needs of the users and most importantly, the company. They usually have
a specialty in a field in organizing, refining or gathering.
Responsibility of database jobs
The responsibility of a database administrator is to serve as the link between the database designers,
knowledge managers and users. The database designers are often brought in for completing specific
projects and then moving onto other projects at other companies or different departments at the same
company. Their job are usually finished when they finish designing the database. While they may be
used in the future to perform some
How Soccer Has Influenced My Life
Throughout my entire life, soccer has influenced me greatly. In fact, my childhood can be
described as watching my siblings play soccer. Rain or shine, no matter the distance, no matter
how much I didn t want to go, I was still there to support them. All four of us made sacrifices to
support each other. This made our family more close knit. As a family of respected soccer players
our last name often recognized. This started at an early age and I learned I had expectations to
meet. Club soccer was a wake up call as the tournaments became more serious and games meant
more. I learned the hard way that being prepared is very important when going anywhere. It was
something my parents wanted me to do on my own and not help me with. This made me
The Interesting Narrative and Other Writings by Equiano
Equiano Written by Equiano himself, The Interesting Narrative and Other Writings was
published in 1789. It is written from a first person point of view. It includes a number of letters
written to express himself as a person. Equiano was born in 1745 in a province of Africa, called
Eboe. The book discussed, in detail, his cultural background as well as his family. His father was
a very important man within their village. In the book it also discusses the bond that he had with
his mother and his only sister, expressing how very strong his bond with his sister was. At age
eleven, Equiano was abducted from his home village. He was thrown into slavery, via slave trade,
and was bought by Lieutenant Michael Pascal, of the Royal Navy. In the book it was said that
Pascal had initially purchased Equiano for a friend, but decided to keep him for himself. While
living under Pascal s slavery, Equiano gained knowledge from the New World and was used to aid
Pascal s naval adventures during the Seven Year s War. While in the New World he learned things
such as: language and religion, and reading and writing, which aided him in Pascal s orders. The
book explained that Equiano thought of freedom, away from Michael Pascal, but when Pascal
had become aware of Equiano s ambition, Pascal sold him to another slave, so not to deal with a
slave that had thoughts of freedom. He was sold to Captain Doran of the Charming Sally, but he
didn t stay under his care very long before being sold to a
Franklin D Roosevelt Legacy
There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still. The words of Franklin
D. Roosevelt still ring true today. As the 32nd President of the United States (U.S.), he put these
words to action bringing the country out of the Great Depression and onto the road to victory
during World War II. He used his formal Harvard education, political and leadership experiences as
a solid foundation of his leadership. Added enthusiasm, focus, and determination enabled him to
make the U.S. stronger than the day he took his first presidential oath of office. His years of
service to America have inspired my growth as a leader and the wish to leave a similar legacy
within the U.S. Army.
At the height of the Great Depression in 1933, millions were without jobs and the U.S. economy was
in shambles. Franklin D. Roosevelt was in office for less than 6 months and ... Show more content on

in continued conquest of the world. Money and supplies were sent to Britain and France in an
effort to stop the German advance. On December 7, 1941 a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by
Germany s ally Japan left the U.S. and President Roosevelt no choice but to enter the war. After
the U.S. declared war on Japan, Germany officially declared war on the U.S. creating a truly
global conflict. Only by President Roosevelt s years of political leadership and determination was
Germany and Japan defeated. Being a well versed speaker form years in public office, he
implored the U.S. as a whole to do everything in their power to support the war effort. People and
organizations responded in force providing supplies, labor, and enlistments. Even though President
Roosevelt would not live to the end of the war, his actions as a political leader and Commander in
Chief led the United States on the path to victory and
Hannibal Lecter Villain
Hannibal Lecter was the most feared psychopath created by Thomas Harris. Prior to the release of
The Silence of The Lamb America thought he was another fictional character. After viewing the
movie they began to realize Hannibal Lecter was based off Doctor Alfredo Balli Travino. Travino
was convicted and sentenced to death for the manslaughter of his gay lover Rangel. The crime of
passion included Travino slicing his neck and draining his blood and methodically chopping
Rangel s body into pieces and shoving him into a box. Later he drove to a relative s farm where
he and a farm hand buried the box. Upon the discovery of the oddly marked grave, by another
worker, the police were informed. They went undercover to Travino s practice and arrested him.
Immoral actions are not only in the real world, they are also depicted into novels. From fairy tales
to love stories there is always a villain that stands in the way of the traditional happy ending. For
example in William Shakespeare s Othello, The Moor of Venice Iago, the antagonist, formulates a
malicious plan to destroy Othello.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Iago created this plan out of jealousy and revenge. Cassio, Othello s right hand man, was
promoted to lieutenant instead of Iago. This was the final event that sent Iago over the edge; the
first event being the rumors of Othello having an affair with Emilia, Iago s wife. Iago s plan is to
get Othello to believe that Desdemona is unfaithful to him. Iago s reasoning, jealousy and revenge,
is what characterizes him as evil. He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who
helps perpetrate it (Martin Luther King Jr). He who thinks evil thoughts is as responsible as one who
acts upon them. Iago himself has passive contemplations that transform into concrete
Comparing Pride And Prejudice And Our Mutual Friend, By...
During the 19th century, men were the ones who typically proposed to women. However, men did
not solely ask for their hand in marriage, they also had to formulate something to say. In the books
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens, there are two men
who decide to propose to someone they take liking in. Those men are William Collins who proposes
to Elizabeth Bennett (Pride and Prejudice) and Bradley Headstone who proposes to Lizzie Hexam.
Although both of the men s proposal resulted in rejection, one of the proposals had better diction
than the other. The ideas such as bringing up [their significant other s] reputation or having true
love for [their significant lover] may indicate to the women they are truly sincere. Due to the time
period s typical romances, there were a limited amount of things a woman and man can do with
each other in public. Specifically, the men and women were not allowed to kiss, go on dates alone,
or hold hands. When the woman agrees to a marriageproposal, her and her fiance were allowed to

The proposal featured in Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens has a better effectiveness than Pride
and Prejudice by Jane Austen due to the tone that is communicated to one another and the
persuasiveness of the speaker, which also creates strengths and weaknesses between the proposals.
Despite the fact that both men were denied of their hand in marriage, they both had strengths in
their proposals. In Charles Dickens story, William Collins professes to Lizzie Hexam, I love you.
What other men mean, I cannot tell; what I mean is that I am under the influence of some
tremendous attraction which I have resisted in vain and which overmasters me. By saying this, he
conveys a stronger confidence than that of William Collins, who spends
