Introduction
NS-SEC-180 serial 1.8m satellite communication antenna divides C band, Ku
band and Ka band, the antenna user just need to install C band, Ku band or Ka band
feed as per practical requirement.

The installation method of this manual is generic to 1.8M antenna in C band, Ku

band and Ka band except the different feed size and specifications in different
frequency.

Security statement
Read the manual carefully before installation, and operate as per the relevant
provisions of steps and methods to ensure the safety of person/ equipment and to
develop antenna’s optimum performance.

1. Overview
NS-SEC-180 1.8m earth station antenna is designed and produced by Shaanxi
Newstar Communications Equipment Co., Ltd. The antenna is designed for VSAT
system, which obtains fine specifications such as high efficiency, low sidelobes and
other many good technical parameters since adopt the accurate design and the
superior workmanship to manufacture.

The antenna main reflector is shaped parabolic and is with single piece panel,
which is through high-precision stretch forming and high rigidity of frame riveting
and bonding, the structure ensures the precision of antenna installation and reduces
the installation workload, which makes antenna has strong wind resistance and
enough strength.

Antenna feed system is formed through CNC lathe processing, surface treatment
adopt deductive anodizing, baking varnish(includes primer paint and surface paint).
Antenna steel structural components adopt hot zinc-soak or zinc-spraying
processing and painting finally, the connection components(standard components)all
adopt 316 stainless steel, it strengthens the ability of anti-corrosion and makes
antenna life span more than 15 years.
Antenna consists of main reflector, feed system and feed support bracket, antenna
back support frame, pedestal, foundation kits and 316 stainless steel fastener.

2. Antenna structure and features

2.1 Antenna component

Antenna consists of main reflector, feed system and feed support bracket, antenna
back support frame, pedestal, foundation kits and 316 stainless steel fastener.

2..2 Antenna structure features

1) Reflector

The R.M.S(antenna accuracy) of antenna is as follows:

Single piece petal accuracy: C/Ku band σ≤0.35mm, Ka band σ ≤0.2mm;

6
NS-SEC180 serial 1.8m Rx/Tx antenna user manual

Overall assembly accuracy: C/Ku band σ≤0.5mm, Ka band σ≤0.3mm.

2) Back Frame

The back frame is the most important load-bearing body, it not only needs to
meet the strength requirements but also the stiffness requirements. The entire support
is calculated and checked using mechanical analysis software in the design to meet
the use requirements.
3) Feed support
Feed support is mainly for feed fixing, it consists of feed support and pull rod.
4) Pedestal

Antenna pedestal is colummn-shape pedestal, the simple structure is convenient

for installation and maintenance.
5) Azimuth

Push the back frame to rotate surrounding the axis as to change the angle of
azimuth.
6) Elevation

To change the screw nut’s position of EL jackscrew in order to adjust antenna

elevation angle.

3. Foundation Construction

3.1 Site selection

Selection of the antenna site is one of the important factors to considered for
trouble-free, high quality signal reception from and transmission to the desired
satellites. For optical signal reception and transmission, it is imperative that the
antenna site provide the proper mechanical and boresight clearance, and the absence
of signal interference.

3.2 Foundation construction list

3.3 Foundation construction technical requirement

1) The antenna foundation is reinforced concrete structure and cross shape, and all
steel parts must be welded reliably. The antenna foundation template is 200×200
steel plate and layout 4—Ф15 holes, which will be screwed out by 4—M12
anchor bolts.

10

2) The steel bars in the foundation are made of Ф12 herringbone steel bars and
welded. The interval in the horizontal plane is 200 × 200 with two layers, and the
anchor bolts are welded with the steel bars to form a whole.
3) Control the 300# cement standard.
4) It must be vibrated during concrete pouring, the curing takes 21 days as to reach
210kg/cm2 pressure.
5) If antenna mounted on the building roof, the steel bars of foundation should be
welded with building beam.

4. Preparation before Installation

The antenna containers should be unpacked and inspected at the earliest date to
ensure that all materials have been received and are in good condition.
Any questions regarding missing or damaged materials that is not due to freight
carrier should be directed to Newstar Customer Service Department at:

4.1 Foundation Inspection

Installers/user must confirm that the antenna concrete foundation has been cured
completely and foundation constructed strictly in accordance with the foundation
drawing. If any problems occurred, please notify the foundation constructor and make
related adjustment in order to ensure the successful antenna installation.

4.3 Inspection for Installation Site

General provisions:
1) The right ±90° direction should be clear away from trees, buildings or other
obstacles;

2) The antenna installation site should be far away from building edge,
otherwise it will bring inconvenience for installation;

3) Try to avoid high-voltage lines and aircraft channels;

4) The installation is better being near from the control room;

5) The installation site should be plain and easy for installation.

Roughly satellite positioning
Use spectrum analyzer and with the help of signal strenghth to adjust
antenna’s AZ&EL for the accurate satellite positioning.
Note: make sure the antenna beam center align with satellite but not the
sidelobe(antenna main lode differs more than 14dB from the first sidelobe).

Satellite Finding with Spectrum Analyzer

1) Set up the middle frequency of spectrum analyzer with 1.2G and bandwidth with
500M, observe spectrum changes;
2) Adjust the polarization angle to correct position;
3) Set the beacon freq point as the center freq point;
4) SPAN : 1M , RBW: 10K, VBW: 1K, REF: –40dBm, 5dB/div, ATT: AUTO,

SWEEP: AUTO
5) Add a trajectory to maintain maximum to avoid missing sight.
6) Press MK→CF,BW 3K, VBW 30Hz, SPAN changed to 0Hz, repeatedly adjust
the azimuth angle and elevation angle alternately to maximize the beacon signal
(at least the main lobe and the left and right first side lobes should be seen).

7. Antenna maintenance

7.1 Precautions for use

1) When wind speed reach or exceed 72km/h, antenna must be upturned locked
2) The antenna operator must be trained before operating;
3) If there is abnormal noise appears, the antenna user must stop its work and
conduct troubleshooting.

7.2 Maintenance of Fasteners

Fasteners of antenna system include screws, nuts, flatwasher, spring washer, pins
and so on. Check fasteners regularly to ensure the normal work of the system.

7.3 Maintenance of Surface Coating

All exposed surface should be protected by paint coating to protect the exterior
and life of the antenna system. When the coating is damaged, replenish corresponding
prime paint and surface coat.

7.4 Maintenance of Rotation System

Grease the jackscrew every season with molybdenum disulfide lithium-based

grease.

7.5 Maintenance of Antenna Equipment

Check the antenna system regularly. Generally once every half year.

Check-points include:

1) Check if the corrugated horn film gets damaged or leaky, especially after hail or
heavy rain. The leakage of wave horn cover will affect the normal work if the system
and the replacement should be in time.
2) Clean up water and foreign substance before replacing new born cover.
3) Don’t drop screws and other things into horn.
